  • I've got a similar problem with my front wheel, my lbs can't find a cure and he's checked it over thoroughly and changed the bearings

I've read a little play in the rear wheel is acceptable. It honestly isn't "loose" the rear wheel and isn't worrying me.

The flex isnt at the length of the stays themselves, just at the extremities. As in, it just rocks slightly at the end like you'd get on a steel frame.

I took a 2nd look and it isn't as much as I remembered. I'm sure its fine. Certainly held up this weekend with a couple of savage drops and even worse climbs!

    Looks dialled! Sick ride.

came to the conclusion the rear stays arent flexing, just the wheel is flexing slightly in the spokes and then on the tyre - rear end looks solid. :)
  • Cheers Plyphon. It's nice to have something "sick" that's not my clothing where my baby daughter has thrown up over me! Nice one.

Yeah I was confident it wasn't the frame, certainly not when stationary anyway. Might be worth a wheel tune at your LBS. usually cheap thing to have them do.

  • So my first ride took place early doors on Saturday morning. Properly impressed, loved it etc etc., and am desperate to take it out on a night ride with my Thursday night group ride mates. I need to do some tweaking to my Fork set up as I've only set pressure and sag so far - so if anyone has an idiots guide or link to youtube video i'd be most grateful. Here are some gratuitous shots. It snowed but unlike today, it didnt hang around.

one of the nicest ive seen on here, top bike mate. The fatbar and the stanchions look sweet, havn't seen that colour matching before.

The mudguard on front wheel also looks sweet, as all the red looks like its thrown to the front of the bike, black towards the back.

Thanks Pesky, I'm happy with it :)

To be honest the colour match is purely coincidental as I love Renthal's so would have got them regardless and the mudguard was cut out of a plastic A4 folder after my bought mucky nutz eventually fell apart but I'm quite happy with the match to the 456 as it was different to the red on my last frame. Apart from the headset, seatpost & clamp and front mech everything else is from my old frame that I bent in a "little off"...good thing On One had a sale on! I'd wanted a 456 for ages anyway so I wasn't too bothered and I'm made up with how it rides so all good.

Quick ride after closing the office on Friday and then Sundays ride up on the Brickhill / Woburn trails via the new trails at Rushmere. Great day, shame the snow will melt to leave boggy conditions, but to be enjoyed whilst it holds.

  • I use my 456C as a Tourer...
  • I used a Seatpost Clamp Rack and panniers..

Had to use two empty plastic water bottles and cable ties to keep the panniers from flexing and rubbing the rear tyre..

When we got to our destination we left the rack and backpack behind, unwound the TALAS to 140 and hit the trails!

My girlfriend rides a Steel 456 Summer Season which had a Recon 351 (85-130mm travel) and did the same..

we had an amazing On-One Trip through France...
  • Wow, what a fantastic thing to do. I wish my fiancé was interested in riding to that level. Just to get her interested in riding a steel hardtail would be a result :D

Just goes to show how capable On One design these frames to be.

    Looks really good.

In the end I rebuilt my rear wheel - the bearings were shot. Fixed all shifting issues and flex issues. Back to being solid as a rock.

Going to relace my front hub to get it all black, and swapping to 2 x 9 with a bash.... let the fettle commence!

Liking those one ones may have to invest in one carbon of course
  • Liking those one ones may have to invest in one carbon of course

I just had a look back through the whole of this thread and I can see why you might want to invest - what a collection of bloomin fantastic C456's (and I include mine in that statement without any cockiness:D).

Now, is there anyone on this thread who hasn't completed their build yet? If so then get a move on - the good weather will be here soon (he says optimistically).

    Paul

PS some of the bearings in my Superstar hubs went kaput in a short space of time. Whilst they are "wear and tear items", I explained that good customer management = increased profitability. In the post this morning I received a package from Superstar containing some spare bearing sets and usual stickers, Haribo and pocket product guide. Well done Superstar.

Just need to change my front rim... but it does have a perfectly working one at the moment.

other than that, all good. put the 2x9 + bash on the other night, works fantastically.

No money left? That's a poor excuse if you ask me ;D. But I guess all good things come to those that wait, or save up, or put on credit card, or borrow, or sell stuff!!

That's a first for Superstar to send out replacement bearings for free! Mine needed replacing in my switch hubs after about 6 months but I knew the orignals were fairly low quality and got a full front and rear set of good quality bearins from ebay for £35ish (search "prorider switch")

I'm giving my 456 it's first proper ride out in the Peak District on Sunday, can't wait

Lucky you! I had an awful experience with them over my wheels! After 3 rides, the spoke tension and bearings had gone, sent them back as I'd happily let them fix it. They had the wheels for over 3 weeks and didn't contact me once (only got answers when I phoned). When the wheels turned up, they were well built, but the rear bearings were still rough, and I also got no refund on postage on a technicality. I love their stuff, but I'm not at all happy with the customer service!

And don't take this as a rant ... just as a bit of bad feedback! Shame I needed brake pads a few days after ... wasn't planning on using them again in a rush! It seems like what they sell is good quality, just the bearings are crap!
  • Greer and Neal

It does seem after sales customer service is hit and miss with superstar - they could do with hiring me as the head of customer service to sort the issues out ;)
Communication is poor - I had to ring every time. Their social media presence is a bit half hearted also.
Product is good - for me it's bang on value and that side of customer service is smooth, with quick delivery, Haribo and stickers, and I'm always impressed by quality of their product.

In terms of the bearings, my LBS said the ones Superstar use are good quality Jap products but must lack a quality control process at the source as typically they are spot on when found in other components but not on this case.

I'm lucky to have got anything I suppose, they are a wear and tear item after all, but I felt put out and let down by the speed in which they failed and my LBS advised me to contact them. Because they have poor customer processes it took my effort to get a warranty claim started but they got there eventually. It won't stop me using them, though I do hope they work on that side of the business.

PS - I really was hoping for some Gold nano techs but the bearings'll do. :D

PPS due to cold & chest infection this weekends ride will be 1st in a month and only my 5th on the C456!!!!

Hi guys, been rooting through Google for some up to date C456 reviews and came across this Forum/topic. I've enjoyed reading through your comments and looking at your pic's so I'm now going to try and give you a bit of my C456 experience out here in sunny Spain.
I' bought my frame in late 2011 and took the liberty to custom paint it on arrival, ( I did this as a job on motor bikes in the UK) It got all the useable parts off my previous KTM Flite put on it and I have been adding to it slowly as things have worn out. WE have covered about 6,000Km in the last 15mths.

I'm 6'2" and about 13 1/2 -14st depending on season! & From my KTM's geo I opted for an 18" frame and have to say it's a perfect size for me , I'm running it with an On One CNC 70mm Stem. I don't like stretching too far out & with a bit of a bad back at times I have my seat is quite forward too on a straight post but it suits me and helps keep the front down when climbing these bloody hills.

I was paranoid about the delicacy of a carbon frame and probably went ott with paragon tapes helitape but it has paid dividends and is still well protected even after more than a year.

My main negative is to do with the swapouts, 1st flex within the brake side swapout, mine is the one with the caliper mounted on the top , 160mm rotor & with the brake applied it twists too much and effects the line of rotor. The swapouts are also very smooth around the dropout slots and if the skewer is not done up silly tight they can move causing creaks etc.

Best new things this year have been, Sun Ringle black flag pro wheels, unbelievably strong for the weight, and the phenomenal 2012 XT brakes!! I'm looking for a new fork in the near future but the 120mm reba is working so well it might just get replaced. It's mainly hilly XC round here (0-2000ft) so the longer forks are really not needed. I will definitely be looking at a tapered steerer and 15mm maxle. some great offers on RCZ at the moment.

I love it and it is so comfy but planted, whenever I jump aboard an Alu framed bike it feels so hard. It's tough too I've had a good few offs that would have wrecked anything that was at all of dubious quality. Me included, ouch!!

Her goes with a few pic's of the frame for now. I painted it with a black base coat, painted on some self generated celtic knot graphics & Silver logos then applied a chameleon colour change pearl over it all. Due to the angle of light hitting the paint I rarely see the crimson & gold colours it's mainly Blue/purple that I see in normal use.

Here is as good a pic that I have of my home made stainless chainsuck frame protector. Fashioned in cardboard then transfered to a sheet of stainless taken from the front of an old oven, then bent around a vice etc. it has been effective but recently came adrift and has allowed the frame to be scraped through to the carbon, I must get it bonded on better this time.

    hainsuckprotector.jpg

Here's a pic that I took recently (Jan 2012) on a local hill top that sort of shows the terrible terrain & climate that WE have to function in here in Spain, note second bottle cage it gets hot here!!20130110130411.jpg

But not always!! and there was not enough room for the mud/clay on that day, we just ground to a halt
    mudoq.jpg

We've even done a couple of MTB Marathons which are a challenge but a good test of your fitness etc, at nearly 50 I'm doing OK. and finished 80th overall out of 350.
    20121105142627.jpg

    cheers for now

    Aidieb.
  • Hola - Glad you found us Aidieb. Your frame looks pretty cool and must look great in the Spanish sunshine.

The carbon frame is pretty robust and can take a real battering. That's quite an extreme chain device you've made. I use a self bonded innertube and a Bionicon V2 chainguide which works very very well so far.

Looks like you have a whole load of fun on it - it looks like you use it for all sorts too.

It looks like you've got some good trails in your area of Spain.

Hopefully you will be the first of many international OnOne C456 riders!
