Yeah - very fun. Due to weather/ recent weather it was mainly an XC style pootle rather than faster trails...

Still good fun tho, hit a few descents that were mental fun and gave me the balls to go a bit faster/take lines I'd previously avoided etc. Very stable at speed and steering is very precise - something I didn't think I would notice but aye very direct steering.

That's reassuring. So looking forward to starting/finishing my build now.

Also: Looking to fit a new rim on the front in black to match the rear - what are you guys using?

I recently replaced my wheelset (couple of months ago) to a set of Superleggera's from superstar. Great hubs, fairly light, and got it all in black and gold in-line with the theme for the upcoming C456 build. Can't go wrong with superstar. You can always get better but I had no idea how much an aftermarket wheelset costs (crazy money for Hope and DT) so superstars sale really helped me (my old set was FUBAR'd).

Lots of sales soon so keep an eye out on usual suspects like CRC, Merlin etc.

    Paul.

Superstar emailed out some deals yesterday I think. Check it out. I'm sure you'll get a festive bargain

  • Father Christmas and my lovely family have been brilliant with my Christmas presents today. I have been lucky enough to receive some On One risers in Gold, Gold superstar seatclamp and a cnc on one 60mm Stem in black. I also got some headset spacers and new superstar grips with gold lock-ons as a small gift to myself for being a good boy all year.

2 days to go before the build starts!!

    Merry Christmas.

  • The frame swop/build from a Carrera Kraken to an On One Carbon456 is now complete. I'll either put it here or start a new thread - though I paid for it to be built so not much for any prospective self builders to learn from it :D

Arm twisted. I'll sort this out soon. Just waiting on a few more pics taken in my absence during the build.

:) yeah you don't get much room between there anyway, let alone with a tube wrapped around it. Looks a good job, i like the ghetto tube on a black frame, it really goes well - and its better than the alternatives of frame being gauged!

Have you ridden it much since Christmas?

I've not got out the drive on mine yet :(

Need to replace the ghetto tube on mine, worn through due to the recent weather making the chain suck.

Has become alot less frequent when using Muc off G3 chain lube though.

Good to know it works though eh! And so cheap to replace (love a bargain me).

Is the G3 the ceramic one? I'm almost out of the muc-off wet lube so the g3 will be my next purchase if its better than what I'm using.

Oops, it was C3 not G3.

    http://muc-off.com/en/bicycle/19-c3-cer ... ry=bicycle

Only needs a little bit to work on the rollers of the chain. Spin it a few times then wipe off excess.

Will be buying White lightening Clean for the summer use.
  • Ah C3 :). I'll give it a go and see how it does - though the standard Muc Off wet lube has worked a treat for over a year now. I use it all year round as dry lube is much less effective for the conditions where I ride.

I'm not sure where you ride or the conditions you have throughout the year, but it seems to be the general consensus that dry lubes are pretty much pointless for off-roaders as its only two weeks in the year where the trails are completely dry! Fine for roadies. This might not apply to your local conditions of course so don't take it as law ;D

We have lots of sandy, muddy grit round here, all year round.

Tried alot of lubes in the past, Muc Off Wet lube (horrible ime), Muc Off Dry lube (ok for minimal miles under 20 in dry conditions), Finish line Wet, again to thick. Finish line dry, worked well on the commute, over 20 miles nah. GT85 worked better!
Gold lube? Forget then name but thin stuff, ok for 40miles road work, pish off road.
White Lightening, Clean, and epic were better than the Wet ime.

C3 seems to be the winner at the moment.

My commute is on country lanes, can be wet most days and also the Wirral Way on the way back. Again this can be wet due to standing water. Try to hit the coast twice a week for a 28 mile ride home after work. Sand involved for a short distance. Some lubes attract the bloody stuff!
  • I'll give the C3 a try when the Wet runs out. Hope for a nice dry spring and a summer drought for less maintenance this year - highly doubtful though :)

Yeah lots of sand round Woburn but we are almost the furthest point from the sea so its not of the beach variety.

In heading up to Liverpool again next month - is there much good riding your way?

Sure is, from liverpool you have option of the following with times from tunnel

Delamere, xc forest boggy but good for fitness. 50mins

Moel Famou, xc + mountain downhill, 60mins

    Llandegla, all trail centre. 60mins

We have some short sections off the wirral way but not worth the trip to be honest.

My 456C seems to be quite flexible on the rear end - as in, if you stay the bike with your hand on the saddle and then grab the wheel with the other and flex back and forward - is this normal?

Check the rear drop outs are tight first off. Whilst the wheel is off, check the frame over, though I doubt the frame is the problem. Then check your rear quick release and the hub for play. Could need tightening or the rear bearings might be worn out or need greasing up.

I'm sure it's not much to worry about and/or is a cheap fix. If in doubt, pop it to your LBS.

There is a little play in the hub but this seems external to the wheel - just a bit flexy like you'd get from a steel frame.
  • It can't be the frame surely? I'd take it to the LBS for a once over just to be sure. My frame does not flex in the rear stays when stationary and moving with my hands.

Hmm. Maybe it is the wheel flexing in the spokes.

    I'll take another look
