She said a bit more than that - something about Varnish having a dodgy start and then moving over too early.

I initially felt sorry for them, but now after reflection it seems such a waste of time and money that they can't get a changeover right, particularly after the mens were DQd for something similar earlier this year.

Edit: Netherlands and France also DQd!
Not sure where you're getting your info from but it appears to be wrong...

Instead of disqualifying people, why don't they have a penalty system?

    Terrible by the Aussies.

    Edit: Saving themselves?
  • What a way to finish your olympics. Varnish - finish...no?...drat - me best joke that was. :D

Rules is rules but the disqualification has made these next two races very predictable.

Interesting forks on the GB bikes; very wide at the crown keeping the blades parallel.

It must smooth the airflow when you're not trying to squeeze it between the fork and wheel...

presumably the advantage of narrower forks is stiffness -> but if the 'super squirrel club' is as good as they say it is.. I doubt stiffness is an issue!

China now DQ'd? All a bit of a farce really.

The way they informed (or didn't) the competitors was a total joke. Very unprofessional

Saw that gaunt faced spineless judge in another event earlier in the year, he was DQing people then as well, doesn't have the guts to tell them though. Might have been a tyre in front at best, but probably not. Makes it look v amateur.

If the tv pictures we saw were used to make that decision I find that a disgrace.

Richard Moore predicted this on Twitter before the qualifying rounds.

Yeah I imagine some CFD work shows a marginal gain by reducing turbulence behind the forks and drag on the wheel.

Wait for VP to blame her partner - she has history of that in this event.
She's just sort of done that on Radio 5 - 'Jess got stuck a bit at the start and was a bit jittery'. Rob Hayles says she might have a point though

Doesn't explain why VP as the vastly more experienced rider came through too early. Same as when Shanaze Reade's inexperience rather than VP's false start cost them last time. People I know keep asking me why I don't like VP as it seems to be a crime to dislike an British Olympic gold medallist, well that's the reason!
It is easy to say she came through early but when your riding on a wheel that fast and the whee infront moves, you dont wait you go.
No ones fault really just happened, just a pedantic twat of an official who has history doing this.
The mark on the track for the 15m is barely visible let alone look at it when 2" away from a wheel.
Great ride byu mens pursuit, awseome. dotn think ausies sandbagging . they would never drop a rider at 2k, they could have cocked up complete;y and not beaten NZ. Cant see them going that bad next time tho.
Mens sprint also awsome, 17.2sec opening lap? wow

Meanwhile inside the Velodrome, one of the Chinese riders has stormed out after their relgation. Not really the Olympic spirit.

she came back when she realised they were still getting a medal.

So the third best team get the gold. Not exactly ideal.

Obvious question, but why were China only relegated, when GB were disqualified for ostensibly the same offence?

Qualification for the finals are done on times: if GB had been moved down one place, they would still have been in the Gold/Silver final. Conversely, why were China not disqualified completely and No4 from the qualifications given the Bronze. Seems a bit illogical the way it was done?

(NB: no problems with the disqualification of GB in itself, if them's the rules... just why not an identical penalty for China.)

Sort of. There are blanket agreements in place but their share will be higher assuming the usage is reported.

Let's not be too hasty. I can see a couple of officials in discussion.

    Edit: I think he's joking.

the only purpose of this rule seems to be to allow some ocd afflicted official to disqualify the top teams in the top competitions.
In particular he specialises in dqing brits. He ruined the world championships and now he does his thing on the olympics.
Why does the rule exist? The point of the race is for two riders to go as fast as poss.. Some people are saying ' well, rules is rules', but this is a pointless technicality that needs scrapping along with the people that are enforcing it.

Big question is what would happen if both teams in the medal race i.e. China & Germany, changed early? Can't relegate them both!
The rule creates a paradox, potentially.

Why are you overlooking/ignoring the fact the Chris Hoy/GB won GOLD!?

    And set another world record!

All the rule needs to say is that the riders need to be in the process of changing at the end of the lap. There is no obvious advantage in changing 1m early and it has resulted in 4 teams being DQd. Great ride by the men's team though and fantastic qualifying ride by the team pursuit boys. I wasn't expecting gold in the team sprint, BC coaches showing once again they know how to get riders peaking at the right time. Kenny looking a decent prospect in the sprint if he can get his tactics right, the form is there. Off topic but Kate looking very nice in the VIP box to add icing to the cake ;)

Does seem a little unfair the second fastest team from qualifying gets relegated to 8th, but the fastest gets relegated to 2nd?? Yeah i can see why, because it was a preliminary round, but it still seems very unfair.
