Britain's women disqualified in team sprint
Tragedy for Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Varnish. Boos ring out around the velodrome as it is announced that the British pair has been eliminated from the competition for changing over too early between riders. There is no right of appeal. The crowd have been denied a final between two teams which have broken the world record today. Britain are denied a medal. Thusfar the BBC have denied us a replay so I cannot comment on the rights or wrongs of it. Pendleton looks close to tears. For Varnish, that is four years of work up in smoke - she has no more rides at this Olympics.0 -
Is Pendleton in another event/race? I know nothing of track cycling.

Saw a replay and VP was half a wheel ahead of JV as they crossed the line. I'm a bit confused now though, was that the semi-final? If so do GB go into the bronze medal race?
EDIT just realised they were time trials rather than match races so everyone behind GB moves up.0 -

Yes, she's in the sprint and keirin but that is it for Jess Varnish. Gutted for her, 4 years of hard work and easily earned a place in the gold medal match. It does seem an innocuous error for such a punishment given there is no real advantage from an early change.0 -
Have the Chinese also been DQ'd?0

Doesn't explain why VP as the vastly more experienced rider came through too early. Same as when Shanaze Reade's inexperience rather than VP's false start cost them last time. People I know keep asking me why I don't like VP as it seems to be a crime to dislike an British Olympic gold medallist, well that's the reason!0 -

Well this time she explicitly said on the telly that it was just one of those things that sometimes happens and if anything they were both to blame.0 -
ok, pendleton's just been interviewed and she's got two more days of racing.
It's just one of those things, is one of the things she said, together with overwhelmed by the event etc.

While we're waiting for the mens, here's two questions I've been asked and don't know the answer. Someone here will.
Is Wiggins the only TdF winner to have gone from track to road racing?
Is Wiggins the only road olympic gold winner, to have come from track racing?
Thanks0 -
In the bad old days (as in, early 20th century) track racing was as, if not more popular that road, so roadies usually did both.
Even Merckx won quite a few 6 days races.
That specialisation has only happened reasonably recently.0 -

after watching Cav whizz past at the road race... and seeing him on TV now.
He really is a tiny man.
How does he put out so much power?!0 -
can we blame Wiggle?http://veloviewer.com/SigImage.php?a=3370a&r=3&c=5&u=M&g=p&f=abcdefghij&z=a.png

Victoria Pendleton reacts to her disqualification from the women's team sprint: "I'm desperately disappointed for Jess Varnish because she has done an incredible job in getting this far.
"Her team sprint today was the best of her life so far. I've no doubt she will be back in Rio and absolutely smashing it. I'm sorry for disappointing all the people that have come to support us and perhaps not offering the ride that we would have done. I'm really sorry."
Victoria Pendleton on what went wrong.
"We have never had an illegal change, so we weren't really thinking about it. It's just one of those things that happened. We were probably just a bit too eager and excited for a ride.
"Now and again rubbish things happen and this is one of those days. The only positives I can take is that I know I am in really good form because that was the fastest second lap I have done. I just need to get my head down and concentrate on the races to come."0 -
She's grown up a bit in the last 2 years then. Well done to her, tough to get interviewed in such circumstances so she's gone back up a bit in my estimation. Jess will take gold with Becky James in Rio0
-
She said a bit more than that - something about Varnish having a dodgy start and then moving over too early.
I initially felt sorry for them, but now after reflection it seems such a waste of time and money that they can't get a changeover right, particularly after the mens were DQd for something similar earlier this year.
Edit: Netherlands and France also DQd!0 -

So did China automatically win that race that GB were disqualified from? If yes, who came second?0
-
Now that's more like it - world record for the men's team pursuit despite the third man dropping back a bit far going across the line. Let's see what the Aussies have got!0

Lichtblick wrote:So did China automatically win that race that GB were disqualified from? If yes, who came second?
No, another team goes into the final. Either the Germans or the Aussies -can't remember.0 -

It was based on times, two fastest are in the gold medal match. It would have been China and GB but is now China and either the Aussies or Germans.0 -

The medals are effectively already decided subject to intervention by a commissaire.0 -
Interesting forks on the GB bikes; very wide at the crown keeping the blades parallel.0

Thanks Guys, you know so much.
(Never watched track cycling before, you see.)0 -

Not at all. It's a common thing to do. It wasn't an attack at all. But there was no way he couldn't have stayed on the bike. Something went wrong and he hit the deck deliberately to get the restart.0
