Any chance of Sagan getting over the 1st cat climb with or near enough the lead group on Stage 8?

Well one of the liquigas team people thought this was a possibility and post-race the eurosport guys were discussing this possibility of Nibs the main GC but also Sagan for GC. I recall him having previous form in some sort of climbing territory but i may be wrong. It would certainly be interesting to see.

Tour de Suisse in 2010 possibly? I can remember him climbing with the lead group on a few stages somewhere.

He won the stage to Grindelwald in the TdS 2011 but that was due to his descent. He had been near the front over the top because of being in a breakaway.

Thinking more of a stage win than GC

Not sure he'll be asked to expend too much energy helping Nibali. I reckon his objective for tomorrow is to converse as much energy as possible without getting eliminated. Maybe a bit of back to the team car to get bottles so everyone knows what great team player he is.

It's what team mate Sieberg said after the race, but I suppose he's not a doctor.

Sagan is insane. He can climb stupidly well, is almost unbeatable on rolling stages and now he's beating sprinters on flat stages. WTF?!

    I hope he's for real.

Why did Cavendish finish so far back?

Lucky to just miss 2 flying bikes in todays massive crash, but punctured just to be part of the chaos. @richie_porte came down but he's ok.

I think it's safe to say that this Tour is not going the way I expected. A crazy first week.

Real shame about Hesjedal. He looked very capable of a top 5 finish.

It was a bit confusing that Garmin didn't commit any of its riders to wait for him to help pace him back.

He finished in the same group as 5 other Garmin riders.

I think the only Garmin riders that didn't finish with Hesjedal were Danielson, Zabriskie (both for obvious reasons) and Van Summeren who finished a further three minutes back.

A pretty disastrous day for Garmin really. Zabriskie is now their leading rider on GC over 14 minutes down on Cancellera.

    Nibali
    Wiggins
    Coppel

This is taking into account the huge crash on stage 5 and an unexpected crosswind split into Cap d Agde

    one stage out :)

Ah, right. Thanks - seems a strange way to do it though, why not just add the top 3 on GC together?

'cos that would be crap, the idea is that the best _team_ wins, not the best 3 riders on the same team, the idea is that it doesn't matter which of your guys finish in the top 3 you get to win the competition, so you can attack with different guys each day to try and win it. Leads to more aggressive racing.

Yes he was caught up in the crash and then at first he was chasing with EBH apparently but must have realised he wouldn't have made the front group and just eased off and came in without expending much energy

@millarmind Somebody partaking in the Tour de France knows they caused that crash. Whoever you are: THAT WAS NOT COOL.

Schleck: “The time loss is what it is. I wasn’t one of the top favorites for the overall, but this is, of course, untimely. I mean, I have been feeling good since the start in Liège. We have had an amazing time with Fabian in yellow and I was feeling confident about what is to come. Now that I’ve lost this amount of time, it changes things. We'll see with the team if we change my strategy. This is cycling: there are good times and bad times.”

Schelck added: “A bunch of riders were going maybe 70kph and there was a crash on a big road – when it’s that speed you can’t really avoid it. I don’t think I have anything broken. Just some pain in my shoulder, some pain in my hip and we’ll check my knee. So we’ll see. If there is nothing broken I will be there tomorrow.”

Cancellara was almost caught up in the final crash, too, seeing if unfold right beside him: “From the beginning there were crashes today after only 25km. In the middle there was a crash, then toward the end there was the crash right next to me. I was happy that at 70kph I could stay on the bike. We had to take a look around to see which teammates were still in the group and we saw that Fränk was not with us. It was already too late, the race was going away. We have Andreas up there so now he’s the leader of the team. We found out Fränk’s group was more than two minutes behind and there was nothing we could do. Now our plan will change on how to use Fränk on a team that still has big ambitions for the Tour de France.

@hornerakg Rough day out there today. Had a body on my back wheel at 70 kph. Stayed upright, barely

Told ya he'd do well to not be in a crash long before the Tour.

Appalling day for the Dutch. Poels out and all their GC contenders lost time.

Jonny was behind the crash and had to brake so hard to avoid (which he did) his tyre burst .

"I crashed at 35km and then again at the mountain ranking," Greipel told Radsport-News.com. "I didn't want to sprint, but my teammates talked me into it. It was unbelievably painful."

Then he goes on to contest the sprint at the end and places 2nd. Heavyweight.

Oh and now I read on CN that the commies have hit
Gesink and Kruijswijk with a 20 sec time penalty for drafting.
Nice touch of sympathy, that.
