IP - Chapeau on the time.
I'd be surprised if any of the top 10 SCR's on Strava were set whilst commuting,

Mine was. Think the time was on the Planet X last year with backpack, but I'm close this year on the Dolan which weighs a tonne.

Probably going to head to the park tonight and see what I can do (will be nowhere near sub-17 though).

    Kudos.

How much difference to people think a bag makes though? I rode a tonne on Sat with a loaded overnight bag, didn't feel like it made that much difference to speed. Averaged 18.8mph. Not massively comfortable though!

Probably not that much - nearly all my KOMs are on the commute with work bag (sometimes quite loaded), winter bike and usually baggies as well. For longer rides I do feel a sense of liberation getting the best bike out and decent kit on, probably makes a bigger psychological difference than anything else.

I would imagine my race bike is 2kg lighter than my commuter and my rucksack is probably 3/4kg so its probably around 5kg, quite a chunk! But the biggest difference will be the £10 tyres on the commuter and the non aero wheels. Its been calculated how much difference weight makes, its not massive, but it will make a difference. Especially when its getting on for a stone.

Don't think it makes that much difference. I've done the KW Thursday night chaingangs with it. For longer rides its more of a comfort thing.

Also bear in mind that if you're trying to be aerodynamic a block on your back aint helping!

Agreed. If I ride CW to Richmond and chuck in a few laps of the park its 30 odd miles and it starts to hurt the lower back.

Also, if Im bombing down saywers (legally, naturally) on the drops with a flatish back, I cant help but think the giant bulge on my back isint the most aero thing to exist.

Someone should invent an SCR back pack thats nicely profiled like a sharks fin

oo oo .. something akin to the philosophy of why superbike riders now have leathers with a inbuilt rear neck expander panel thingymerjib.

So the rucksack would have most of its mass at the top and funnel down to a point at the small of the back. Not sure how comfortable it wold be, or how practical fitting your trousers, shirt, cheese and pickle sandwich and a pork pie in.

Depends on whether you have a rucksack/backpack or what can at best be described as a man-bag.

I still go faster without the backpack, but I find the extra effort to get up Sawyer's and Dark Hill takes its toll more over three laps. As said above, the lower back starts to ache.

  • OK, I have a QQ. I'm going for a 60 mile ride tomorrow, if my iPhone battery dies on me whilst recording Strava, will I lose the ride data, or will it save it as an unfinished ride? I know I need to get a Garmin Edge!
Why? Because I'm guaranteed a seat all the way in.

Don't know about iPhones, but I recorded a century ride on my HTC without the battery dying - Strava isn't too heavy on battery from my experience. Good luck with the ride!

Switch the phone from 3G to GSM (Settings, General, Network, switch off 3G). That saves the battery life a fair bit. Turn it back on once you're done though.

I'm on the Brompton, so a slightly more leisurely pace. Seemed to kill the battery before. I'll keep an eye on it. Cheers peeps.

Holux, £55 in the UK or cheaper through DX. Battery lasts 28 hours. Sounds plausible, I've done a week's commuting and it still shows full charge.

I'm hoping to get the Garmin Edge 800 as that's had awesome reviews - Plus it sounds like it will make me work harder, which I need to do, plus if I get into club riding / racing it sounds like it works well for that too. I haven't heard of the Holux, but could be a more affordable contender? Will Google this weekend. :D

My Holux is nearer to a Garmin Edge 200, but even cheaper. Doesn't do any of the mapping, heart rate or cadence. But I'm not fussed about that. The software is a bit more clunky as well. Holux do posher models than mine though.
The Edge 800 is supposed to be very good, but I don't need most of it's functions. Come to that I don't need my Holux, but it's a bit of fun.
  • I'm liking my Holux, but then I haven't used a Garmin to compare. Still, picked up a KoM this morning:

Would have been even better if I had come along the main road, rather than turning onto it just before the segment start. At one point I was 12s down on the previous KoM.

Nice one. See, I'm fine with the iPhone app, it seems to work well. But I was concerned about a longer route tomorrow, and the battery going dead. I'd like a speedometer though as there's a certain hill I have my eye on where I need to hit the high speeds in order to reclaim SCR victory.

It’s quite satisfying working out who the CS7 KOMs are on Strava as I know we are v likely to have crossed paths before.

Using my Inspector Clouseau-like detective skills, I figured out two people this afternoon. One chap because he rides a Titanium single-speed and is a Norwood Paragon (easy to work out) and another because he rides without any fear pretty much regardless of the traffic conditions (and he mentioned his name was Steve!).

Wait until the iPhone app does what my Android one did; stopped recording after about 1-2 miles of my commute. Missed out on some of the best tailwinds, absolutely killed the KoMs on several sections, got to the end of my commute and the bloody thing had recorded my warm-up and nothing more.

Once was bad enough, but I spent nearly a two weeks repeatedly ripping the pedals off my bike for nothing.

Strava is quite a drain, I would guess something like 20% per hour? turning off 3G would help but if I was you I would stop Strava before the battery flats entirely. I have trust issues with the Strava app after it lost a few rides in the past...
