itb, did you ride up the front to the Youth Hostel on the opp side of the river to the town?

Nope dont think so just both sides of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, Koblenz

That's where the youth hostel is, in the fortress, pretty cool. Stayed there while backpacking way back when.

    I'm now a Strava-er!

10th out of 11 on one segment (of two on my commute). Due to solid traffic I couldn't hammer it, but if it's clear I know I can match the 20mph average along that stretch, assuming the lights are kind to me.

How do you create segments btw?

You go for a ride then you log into strava.com, view the ride, then hit create segments.

my strava question for the day is are segments supposed to be bidirectional? my commute to work has 3 segments, the return shows none, and when I go to create segments for it on the list of similar segments in brings up the ones going the other way??

Is that your club hill climb course?

The Strava one is longer - pretty much the full hill to the layby at the top where the Golf Club is. The Ajax Hill climb starts further up the hill where the entrance to Cefn Garw Quarry is on the right. I think one the quickest club hill climb was around 5m30ish. It took me over 2 minutes more - lol. I'll try to set up the Ajax Hill climb soon.

Right, I'm off to ride my bike as it's my day off - 3 of us going towards Cowbridge.

No, a segment has a set direction (e.g. East->West). So if you want the return, you need to create a second segment.

    Vector theory :)

Another little blast around the park today, got held up a fair bit in the first half, and was going to call it a day when I almost had to stop at the first roundabout, but kept going and beat my last time by 5 secs. So hopefully if I get a clear run then I can get the title of commuter lap record from Il P (who did his time on a Sunday morning on the Dogma 2, cheating sod :P )

Reckon with the right wind and my other bike with aero gear there is a 15.xx in my locker. Still all bodes well for the TT in a month.

Ah, such modesty! David Millar has gone sub-14 so I think you are setting your sights a bit low there.

What's the point in being a tw@ about it? I'm confident I can do a really quick lap this year with the right conditions etc.

There's 15 people on Strava that have done it, and obviously countless more than could or have but don't use the service.

Kudos to iL p, done a sub 17 this morning. Were you on the Pina again James?

Last night's chaingang suggested that my 30 second power is pretty good at the moment, although anything beyond that is not too hot. Confirmed when I uploaded yesterday morning's commute and spotted this:

Not sure Matt was - just suggesting it's a stiff target. Be a blummin' good target to hit though. I'd be happy with sub-20 if I ever got the chance to ride it!

Sorry, maybe a smiley would have helped. Sub-16 as a solo ride on a road bike is very quick, I suspect most of the times on Strava were set on the Dynamo chaingangs / tt set up. I could be wrong though, will be interesting to see how you get on over the summer.

Well done Il P, sounds like you and the bike are gelling nicely!

Its 1.30 odd I need to find to hit it. Thing is I don't think I could do a morning lap, just can't go that hard in the morning.

    No worries

Yeh, its a quick time. A couple of guys I ride with have done 16.05 (one last night), one on a TT bike, one on a normal bike with Tri bars. Power wise I'm ahead of one of the chaps (as he uses a powermeter) and he thinks its possible if I can put down the same 20 min power for a clear lap that I did a few weeks ago, that I can do it. But proof will be in the pudding :)

To be fair, yes, its maybe not unrealistic. My long term target is 3 in sub-50 which I've never quite managed. That would be 16:40 pace so for the right kind of punchy rider on a 1-lapper, maybe you could go sufficiently quicker. I always find that I'm a pretty similar pace though, e.g. my PB on the time trial is marginally slower average than my 3-lap PB. I find RP a tough place to really up the pace over a shorter distance, but that is probably just me.

Yeh, I have never found the motivation to do 3 laps. I know its a great benchmark, but I just can't deal with the repeating, and also if I get two clear laps and then held up loads on the last, its all that effort wasted!!

Thanks. Yeh, the young lad that sat on my wheel then came round was quick. Not sure if I'll see them in any local races now I'm Cat 2, hopefully! Still got a £50 voucher for AW cycles that I need to spend.

Thanks chaps. Managed that with a slipped seat post as well (fricking thing dropped 4 cm between Roehampton gate and getting back home), so confident that faster is possible.

@okgo I'm not sure how using the Dogma is "cheating?" Plenty of times in there are set by Chain gangs or people in TT gear. The Pina is not the most aero of bikes, although I'm sure the 404's make a difference. In the main though, I trained hard from Jan onwards so assume I'm beginning to reap the benefits, times have been coming down with some consistency. No point in me ever attempting a fast lap on my commuter as I run a singlespeed 50*16 - would struggle on Dark hill and spin out on every downhill section. No chance whatsoever!

In other news, terrible seat clamp design aside, the Dogma2 is f*cking ridiculous esp with the Zipps in place, goes like a rocket when you put the power down. People can say what they like about the looks, weight, cost whatever they want to b1tch about, but it is hands down the best bike I have ever had the pleasure of riding.

Bloke at Dulwich likes his as well. I asked him if his heart was in his mouth when I went down in front of him on Sunday, he said no - he'd had plenty of crashes and the bike is there for racing! Chapeau to that, I'm not sure I could be quite so philosophical!

I was jesting that it was cheating as everyone else on here has been doing them on their work hack. But if you only have a SS, then no point that  But I hope the lap to feel better on my nice bike.

I've been training hard since November, not sure if I've been reaping any rewards or not!

BTW, does anyone have the link to the RP lap segment that is being used as the unofficial commuting forum record? Be interested to see how far down I am at the moment, I'll hopefully be getting there one night next week, maybe even at the weekend if weather is good and I'm feeling keen...

I know you were, but people certainly aren't all doing it on their commuters! I'd be surprised if any of the top 10 SCR's on Strava were set whilst commuting, the top 50 or so overall are certainly not being set on commuter hacks...

Christ 8th place is an 15.37 but with only an average 216 watts, would that have been a chaingang effort or is that possibly by being very light and very aero ?

Chaingang, look at the others that did the same time on the same day.

Steve Irwin is very economical with his watts and needed over 300 for his time.
