Missed out on beating my Box Hill PR by 1 poxy second today. Been training, lost weight and still not faster up it, FFS! http://app.strava.com/segments/865711 Determined to break under the 6 min barrier this year.

Thats the wrong segment too if you're judging by the lists on here etc

You want the one that ends where the cafe crossing is, that's what most people will be using when they quote their time I think.

Still pretty quick though. I want to have another go at it soon. When it gets light in evenings I'll have a crack as I've got quicker I think (but like you said, you never know)!

those chasing times up box hill should see improvements as summer comes.

since the road will be resurfaced and no speed bumps.

plus less air resistances, lots of jackets still to be seen today. once it warms up and less wind should be able to claw back a few secs.

i went west today going up to Newlands Corner a little steeper for longer, and busier road but decent coffee and view, if rather tame, fun going down though not a patch on Combe Bottom which is a hoot.

I went down whitedown and up coombe bottom today. Both horrid in their own right

I always rather liked going up Whitedown though since my road bike is my commute bike, and a single speed so i'm not likely to go up it any time soon!

loads of road kill today even a deer, few years back was a dead deer nr the hairpin in Combe Bottom, you could smell it long before you could see it.

Took a bit of a detour this morning as my son was riding to school for the first time so I tagged along with him. Turned Strava on to see how far it was. I noticed this segment I picked up: http://app.strava.com/rides/5414116#103253935 looked a bit odd. It tells me I'm 8th, but that would be impossible given the rather long detour I took. Also when I did get back to the main road I got 3 red lights, so wouldn't have been particularly quick.
Passed a big bloke on a black Focus road bike along there.

Had a bit of time on my hands today so decided to see what all the Box Hill fuss was about. Found it, rode up it, was unimpressed (although the view was nice) and rode home again. 6:08 any good as a first effort? Plenty more in the tank for next time.

Been thinking about making a similar trip, not worth the effort? I suspect I'd spend much time getting lost!

As said, the proper segment goes right round the corner to the cafe, but yep 6.08 is decent (your time for the other proper segment was 6.19) puts you in the top 25 on Strava I think? So you can safely say that its a very good effort. Not sure how nice the wind was etc but well done.

If you had more in the tank then you could be able to get a sub 6 minute time on the proper segment, which is very impressive, there's at least 5 riders in that top 25 who are Elite level, and a load of Cat 2 etc. Of course there has been faster than on there, I think a lad did just over 5 mins, but he's a pretty tasty rider ;)

It's just a quiet bit of road in the countryside; nice enough, I suppose, but not quite how I imagined the big Olympic climb to be!

There are many better climbs IMO. I still think they could have used Leith Hill to better effect. Or even Come Bottom or something too, but suppose you need roads wide enough for the number of riders.

6:19 is faster than I have ever managed. Never seem to be on great form the rare occasions I get there - either early season, mid-sportive or after a hard ride down to Surrey. Would love to beat 6 minutes, hoping to get some climbing legs on me this summer...

Not sure I agree with the cafe finish being the proper segment. Problem is that corner is blind and there's always a chance of peds, dog walkers etc being around to mess things up. Hence I use the 2.2k seg. It ends at the summit after all.

Vermin, that's a pretty good time for a first effort, especially in March. Looking forward to the resurfacing.

I like this. Purely by moving the goalposts I have a sub-6 min time up box hill. Huzzah! Having it.

The resurfacing and removal of the speed bumps will make a huge difference.

It's pretty gentle really. I think it's just the views and the cafe at the top and the hairpin bends mean you can kid yourself (if you screw your eyes up) that it's an alpine climb. Leith Hill and Whitedown are much more of a challenge.

EDIT: Surely surface-of-the-moon tarmac is all part of the Surrey Hills experience?

I am hoping for a better run home than I did on the way in, little bit headwindy, but at least now I have reminded myself where the segments are that best suit me.

Even still, in a bunch it's almost shallow enough to still be sucked along I reckon, I may be wrong, but if club riders can average 17 mph up it for 5 mins, in a big bunch it's going to be pretty straight forward and I just can't see anything steep enough to allow climbers to put the hurt down.
