I'll share joint first with Ed on Royal Hospital > CB and Chelsea Embankment to PS... equal times :)

Also missing JonGinge on PB north with a ridiculously quick time - someone get him to join the SCR group!

Make sure you use a Concept2 machine - should be standard in a gym, and set the drag lever between 4 and 6. Don't fall into the usual gym-monkey trap of whacking it up to 10. It really pays to get the technique right before hammering it too - helps you not get injured and will improve your times.

http://www.concept2.com/us/training/technique.asp is a reasonable starting point.

    Good link - thanks :)

Will need to get out my rowing machine for a practice - its a cheapie that gives me rpm.. sorry SPM but not distance. Never tried a flash machine like a Concept2. Will have to find a gym that will let me have a go without charging me for the next year...

Still, set a PR for the Broomfield segment. Not bad for a February morning.

Having done 5000ft of climbing with Ed last saturday, I can confirm that its going to take a SERIOUS climber to take him up anything steep. He made the rest of us look stupid up Toys Hill haha!

A clear run at Amersham Way is my nemesis! A "did not compute", two 37s & a 36 this evening shows consistency but no improvement over the week :( Negotiating a car at the start & having to slow & go round the utter plank who stopped in the middle of the road to let on some passengers just before the traffic lights at the top cost me time.

However, there is still next week :D

It may have already been covered but rode RP today and the strava segments are a mess, apparently I was averaging 30mph to 60mph?!

Looking to close this month out with 920 man miles (20-30 run, 40-50 Brompton), if only it was a longer month, another two commutes and I'd have my 1000

507 miles in my first full month of commuting. 1000 seems impossibly lots.

but still, stoked! this is a good foundation on which to build by [buying a lovely light road bike and] doing some RP laps on the way in.

Couldn't get a GPS signal when I set off this morning.

Shame, since I had good lights for a change.

Tower Hill - Thames St Climb is a little out methinks. The pedestrian crossing just before stopped me, so I decided to take it easy. A flat 17mph all the way through sees me with a Strava reported 18.7mph average :? :? I never even got (or tried for) that speed... So it looks to be reading 10% over...

I've just created Traitor's Run, which is essentially the Embankement/Lower/Upper Thames to Tower Hill - 2.5 miles. Good for consistency as opposed to sprints but you need to be lucky with the lights and traffic :)

Whoop - 2 Weekday morning rides to RP in the last 2 weeks, 2 PR's set!

    Broomfield: Broomfield.png

    Dark Hill: DarkHill.png

Not too shabby for a couple of mornings in February, although miles off the KOMS (27th for Broonfield and a lowly 67th for Dark Hill).

Might have to do those again, think I've only gone that way twice in the last few months. Can't have you beating me though!

Well done that man. I've been hitting it hard for the past couple of weeks and I have yet to get a proper clear run at it. Last nights PR came off a slow start. Still won't get a 30 I don't think, thats too far away for me unless there's a bus to follow ;)

Never seen a bus go up there fast than 20mph so doubt that will be much help, going to give it another quick bash tonight :D

being slow(er) and the knack of passing though when it's chockah full of traffic can't imagine I'll be troubling any one with that segment though fun looking one.

Yeah, I'll have a go tonight as well methinks, though I'm having a drink with my nephews in Liverpool Street beforehand :? On the upside, should be a bit quieter at 19:30 or so.

Might have a crack tonight as well. Good run up Southend Road climb this morning, then had a crack at Loampit but misjudged the start so lost a few seconds, shame as felt good after that.

Just to mention, I am starting to fear for Strava's long term future. They have a ridiculous habit of removing segment leader boards if they are flagged by somebody as dangerous. Tower Bridge north and south now gone. WTF? They will very quickly ruin it if they don't sort that out.

What?!!!? I've just re-flagged them asking them to be re-instated. Someone had also flagged TBS - By the Water but they've kept Tower Hill to Bermondsey... No other bridge I see has been flagged.

They need to re-think their whole strategy as one of the obvious by-products of Strava is encouraging people to ride fast in certain places. They can't rule out all built up areas? Removing the Strava segment is not going to stop me riding over Tower Bridge at the speeds I do, nor any other cyclist that goes reasonably fast there.

I regularly exceed the 30mph road speed limit for cars - does that make the route I'm taking dangerous as well?

You're right Mat, the whole ethos of their website is taking the competitive nature of people in order to make money. If they start removing popular segments then they will lose support, following and revenue.
