Nope, tho there does seem to be several rapid female ex-rowers in the club.

I had a bitch of an afternoon @w**k yesterday and decided to take out my agression on an attack on Amersham Way on the way home. Got the approach just right (though a pedestrian and a nodder nearly wrecked it) and then hard on the pedals, ar$e in the air and took advantage of the clear road ahead. Overtook a persistant RLJ'er as well, who had got ahead at the lights, like he was standing still just as we went through the pedestrian lights at the top. I knew it was a good run, I'd put the effort in and was looking forward to seeing my time.

Loaded up Strava and Amersham Way wasn't covered! Looking at the map, it had got my entrance and exit well enough but the route had me going through the Amersham Arms and around the back of the houses on the left hand side! I was absolutely gutted :( What's worse is that on looking at the elapsed time, I would have been taking 1 or 2 secs off my time - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

On the upside, had to take my car to the garage this morning, so rode in, put bike in the back, dropped car and rode back to work. It gave me a chance to have a go at Tower Bridge North and although there was heavy traffic, it was flowing and it wasn't obstructing me. Managed to get 2nd Overall so quite pleased with that. Same run without the traffic next time please :)

    Tower Bridge without traffic?!

That hasn't happened in a loooong time. Storming ride in today, not sure I was especially quick on any segments but my overall time was 3 or 4 minutes quicker than average - just got a 2km PB on the rowing machine as well so getting some form together ahead of HotA on Sunday.

NO NO NO!! Hateful torture implement, the C2.

It's been 11 years since I set my 6:39 which, for someone who weighed 69kg at the time (yes, 69 kg at 6ft tall was a bit freakish for a man in his late 20s) was, I thought, pretty decent. I'd be delighted to find I could go under 8 mins now!

    It's been a long time since I've done a 2k test erg.......

there's a good reason for that - it's like drinking from the lactic standpipe of agony to have your weakness described in big numbers whilst your mates watch.....

Nice description. But I'm still going to sue you for copyright infringement, re. the avatar.
  • I think ergs have a lot to do with why I'm an ex-rower... that and the 5.30am starts :) My erg test scores actually got a lot better last season when I started cycling to work and quit doing any erg training in the evenings. Coach wasn't impressed with it, even tho I did better in the tests.

6:43.7. Set the pace boat at 1:41 splits, so beat the little fecker by 0.3 of a second.

Eased off a stroke too early which was almost very costly. Bizarrely, it all felt relatively comfortable - I barely sweat, no blood blisters on my hands (even though I forgot to take wedding ring off). Proper fooked afterwards though - could barely do a sit up for about 10 minutes! Still, first go on the ergo for a few months so might make it a bit of a regular thing to see if I can get a bit quicker (I always say that, but never do - it just hurts too much to be a regular thing!)

Never came close to that. 6.51 was my PB.
    FCN 2-4.

That's a pretty good time for a non-rower/someone who's not erged for a while, well done. Like Vermin, my best was set as a lightweight (72kgs) a fair few years ago and was 10 seconds outside that last season.

What is the lightweight limit then? Not volunteering, but maybe a silly commuters erg thread is a good idea!

May have changed now, but when I used to do it the lightweight limit for erging was 72.5kg, as this was the maximum weight of an individual in a lightweight crew. I think the crew had to have a max average weight of 70kg.

And now I think about it, my 2k PB, and my best HRR result, came at a weight of 67kg

I've never heard of Ergs before today, but looked it up, looks fun. Where do you go to Erg then? What sort of RPM would you be doing to cover 2km around 7 mins?

The gym? Expect some odd looks when you fall off at the end.

Aim to rate between 30-36 SPM.

I was around 34/35 today. I read somewhere that level 8 is best as most closely replicates actual rowing.

I don't go to the gym hence why I asked!

I presume the resistance is set somehow? How is that measured?

Ergs and fun are not two things I would associate...ever...
    Winter bike - Verenti Kilmeston
Fair weather bike - Ribble Stealth

IIRC water is about 5-6 (outa 10) on your average erg.
  • Make sure you use a Concept2 machine - should be standard in a gym, and set the drag lever between 4 and 6. Don't fall into the usual gym-monkey trap of whacking it up to 10. It really pays to get the technique right before hammering it too - helps you not get injured and will improve your times.

http://www.concept2.com/us/training/technique.asp is a reasonable starting point.

From experience (distant memory) level 8 replicates single sculling pretty well. Level 3 feels more like a lightweight quad with a tailwind. Level 1 is like you forgot your blades.

Machines vary, and it's affected by temperature too - you can use the drag factor reading to fine-tune the lever to match actual rowing. Usually set it to about 135 for blokes, 125 for girls. The world records are all set at factors between 110 and 140.
