I may have just ordered a second Garmin speed/cadence sensor for the commuter so that I can join in...

Why do you need a 2nd? I've got the sensor on the Sunday bike and just have the head unit on the commuter. Works for me

Got Evans to pricematch the sensor down to £23 so seemed rude not to

Go instore, they're sniffy about pricematching online now.
And, um, forget to mention the shipping charge on that site.

Failing that, next cheapest I saw was £31

  • Why do you need a speed sensor? Surely the GPS unit on its own can sense speed? Or is it something to do with accuracy?

Yep, the GPS will do the location, but speed and acceleration will be more accurately measured on the wheel, certainly if it can then compare both readings.

On the iPhone I get the occasional jump where it decides I've crossed the river and back in a second and was doing 1000mph. Would imagine accurate speed/cadence would help to eliminate those hiccups if the Garmin software is even half sensible

I've never had any ridiculous speed measurements from mine yet, apart from the vertical speed.... although when I stop it does sometimes take a moment or 2 to register zero...

Looks pretty good, so I'm in.

Is it worth the £45 for the extra features do you think, and does anyone know how closely the calculated power numbers compare with apower meter?

I don't think i'm going to be troubling the top of the leader boards, somehow.

Right I joined SCR on there. Not sure why, give me a bit of extra motivation next time I go around Richmond Park I suppose.
I hope to remain incognito as I used my real name and a picture of myself. I too do not inten to approach the leaderboards. I'll have to do an off road lap of the Park to see what that does.

Ok, I've signed up to Strava and done my first ride. It uploaded from my phone and I can see it on the website, but it doesn't seem to have any segments?

Should Strava detect the segments automatically, or is there something I need to do first?

Hi Will, it could be that you're on a "segment free" route!

If you design a couple of your own it'll create a leaderboard showing any other strava rider who's used said segment.

Possible, but I'd be rather surprised if that were the case since it's a commute in to central London. I'll add a couple though and see what happens.

There is segment on my commute (Hyde Park, along South Carridge Drive to Exhibition Road) and Strava just wont recognise that i'm doing it!

I look at the current segment for thsi section and it is the exact route i'm doing. Half tempted to just create a new one, but think that kind of defies the point. As you don't want 2 segments the same!

    Any idea guys?

is your GPS tracking it correctly ie if it's out then you'll not get in the segments my iphone often does that so my trips into london often don't get into the segments. some areas are good some are not so good!

Seems spot on, when you look back at the route it even covers the segment. I know what you mean about iPhone GPS, although generally I have found it to be very reliable!

Check that you haven't set your rides to Private, i don't think they pick up segments unless shared.

How do we monitor NSB running red lights and getting good times. :?

Yeah Strava stops when we stop, but the slowing down, speeding up for lights loses us vital seconds, as well as every motorist hating us all when they seem him shoot a red.
