OK, have equalled the KOM on Camberwell Sprint N-Bound. Not sure if it's gonna be possible to do a better time without a) a flying start and b) a green at the opposite end! Had standing start this morning and a red at opposite end (with light queueing traffic....) picked a decent enough gap between the few cars and left braking until the last minute :-D0

I'm thinking I should alter my commute to take in Balham Hill for a change, though I'm not sure I'm prepared for the challenge. I'm in awe of those of you who tackle it daily.FCN3: Titanium Qoroz.0

Got my first ever 20+ moving average, buoyed by the Balham Hill triumph. 20.8, finally.
Had to resort to gears though after managing 19.7 fixed the day before :evil:0 -

so I got back to the office last night about 8:30pm to pick my bike up, ready to smash some KOMs. Only to find out I had a puncture, no tools and no pump! I had to get the train home :x
Which also meant I had to get the train in this morning :x0 -

I can't see me ever getting a 20mph average. 16.8mph is my best so far without an engine. Hats off to you lot, you're all mad. Might do a lap of RP tonight just to see how pitiful I am.0

My average has gone up massively in the last 6 months now I have been very careful with what I eat along with loads of interval training used to struggle to get above 17mph -18.5 mph on my commute and now can easily manage 20+mph. I think intervals/sprints are the key0 -

I think a lot depends on route - I can average 25mph in a race, but struggle to top 15mph commuting through London. These 20mph commute averages, either you have a very helpful route, a "relaxed" attitude to red lights or you're being selective about the stretch you take your average on.
(or you're just a lot quicker than me!)0 -

Yeah this is a moving average as displayed on Strava and can be completely destroyed by a bad run of lights or bad traffic can drop it down massively as you expend so much more energy having to build your speed up on say 15-20 sets of lights you have to stop at.
Also it seems a massive hit to your average can be caused by other cyclists im lucky to have a fairly quiet route in terms of cyclists (no good for scr though) but still is crazy busy car & bus wise but most of these are avoided by using the bus lanes.0 -
Only time I cracked a >20MPH moving average was on my way to the start of the Bikeathon which was done at around 8am on a Sunday morning!
I have hit 17 or 18 a few times heading into town but I think these have either been on early starts or on days that I've had some particularly good SCR action ;-)
Have to say my average has picked up since I started using the bigger gearing, can only assume that combined with the intervals/sprints that SCRing does lend itself to have improved leg strength and general ability to hold a higher speed for longer.
The fun bit now is that I have Strava I have a much nicer incentive to do some intervals on the segments :-)0 -

Circumstance is king.
My first (only) 20+mph average was yesterday.
- Bike. Had to resort to gears, best on SS is 19.7 with a gale blowing behind.
- Almost no traffic, I left at 6am
- Lights. I hit every set of light at the start, but this was the slower part of the commute anyway. It probably saved my legs for once I hit Embankment when I don't think I had to stop more than twice all the way from Chelsea Bridge to Blackfriars.
I've never raced anywhere but don't think there's any way I could hold 25mph. Most averages are around 16-18, you (I) really need all the planets in alignment to get anything approaching some of the quoted speeds.0 -
It's almost all circumstance. I've had plenty of rides where I've felt I've been storming along, holding great pace for long unbroken sections, only to find that a few red lights and some stretches of ~10mph filtering scuppers any decent overall moving average. I've also had other rides where I've not felt 100% but have avoided snarled up traffic and managed to draft whatever there was, hit the wind right and got lucky with green lights and got a 20mph average. I've given up getting worried about or comparing average speeds."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

^^^^This. I am commuting early in and late out and finding that the headwind and lights aren't making much difference. Maybe 1mph. Am hitting 20+ regularly in and out and the conclusion is its other cyclists in the way. This morning down NKR I had the nodders pulling in front at lights and dawdling off with nowhere to go but sit behind until I can move round.0 -

See plenty of stopping until 12th minute, which coincides with crossing the river. But only actually stopped once after that by the look of it, and a bit of a pootle around PSq.
I think I was thankful for the lights, I'm not used to having to peddle for more than 2 minutes at a time0 -

I've never raced either, but in a bunch you'd be surprised what speeds you can hold - especially during the first 20/30 miles of any big Sportives!- 2023 Vielo V+1

Etape Cymru was a big exception to that rule...0 -
I think you're right. My commute, once I'm out of Kingston, is less about lights and more about dog walkers and horny deer in Bushy Park. Slow moving traffic on the A312 to Chavworth drags it down.
I also did the Bikeathon and would say the first 20 miles of that had a far higher average than my commute. That was as a result of trying to keep up with a very keen mate on a ridiculously expensive carbon thing and being in a group of about 10 keen riders. Mind you, I was utterly exhausted by the end of it.0
