So Strava informed me this morning that someone has dislodged me from my KOM that I never knew I held. I don't bother with Strava on my commute thru London anymore but I've aprarently held a KOM since sept 12 on a segmnet taht never existed when I did use Strava.

I find it a little odd, I ride a Brompton yet I'm faster than the other 775 people, however it is on a bit of single lane cycle path with traffic lights in the middle and at the end of it so most of the time you would just be cruising to stop at the lights, or following behind a nodder on Boris. Seriously who sets up a Strava segment somewhere like that?

Oh and the personwho has just taken my KOM has reduced it from 24 seconds to 10 seconds - Adam Hynes you are a cheating car driver.... and a criminal as that is well over 50 mph in a 30 zone.

So there appears to be two new Strava challenges. One for June (Most Miles) and 30hrs in two weeks. 8)

The fizik hours one looks OK, something to heal up for but monthly miles could get a bit dull!

Is anyone going to purchase the Castelli jersey?

I guess that's the benefit of two challenges. Both will be smashed

But who will be the first SCR'r to complete the 30 hour challenge? I reckon I'll have it done by 11/June.

Knocked more than 5 minutes off my time for Jubilee Tower near Lancaster. \o/

OK, so 22 minutes down to 16 minutes isn't going to impress anyone (course record is 6:54), but it pleased me. Tell you what, it'd be a lot easier if I weren't 2 stone overweight... It would have been easier if I hadn't done 29 miles before hitting it, too, I reckon.

Rather annoying that my ascent wasn't rewarded with a fast descent. I got stuck behind a milk tanker, so only averaged 27mph average, and maxed out at 33.1. Given this is the descent where I managed to break 50mph once, that's pretty slow. :(

I've had my eye on this segment since the day I started strava, and I'm finally on the podium: http://app.strava.com/segments/1481137

(I also like to discount the KOM because he definitely did it in a car... so I like to day to myself!)

He didn't do it in a car, but its a glitch probably down to smart recording. He barely broke 25mph and yet its given him as doing the whole thing at 25mph. So I'd say you are 2nd!

Just had my SE10 to London commute KOM nicked by 7 seconds. Will need to be an early commute to have a chance of averaging 22mph to get it back :/

I think I finished it about a week ago. Currently 17th and know most everyone above me was on RAB.

Turns out I now have an Embankment KOM. From last August. God bless whoever made that segment. And on the fixed too. Expect there was some smart recording going on there, and drafting a bus, and I blew up 5 seconds after :D
Still, what are Embankment segments for but 30 second attempts at being a hero, http://app.strava.com/segments/4458614

I've noticed a large number of KOM are from 2011/2012 with very few entries this year, are people being slower or just traffic is more of a problem?

  • Lots of screwy readings today, odd detours and the occasional acceleration from 20-40mph in a few seconds, which of course I could manage no problem but I would probably remember doing it. Any particular atmospheric reason why this should be? Or is my iphone on the way out? Or, as seems most likely, is my power awesome simply melting the space-time continuum?
  • Yeah, pick that one out of the net:

    http://www.strava.com/activities/74153678#1468917601

Sadly, the performance chart shows me accelerating up to 45.5 mph. I was shifting, but there's no bloomin way I was going that fast.

Told you I was getting weird readings. Is there some way to flag your own KOMs as dodgy? It's chuffing annoying as I was definitely giving it some chasing a very fast fella (of which more anon in the SCR thread), it definitely didn't take me 20 secs to accelerate to 20mph, and it's just about feasible the time is accurate (especially given the wind today). But I can't very well let it stand with such flagrantly false performance metrics, can I? Grrrrr.

Just need to bag this one on the next commute home.

There's no doubt that smartphone readings are dodgy altogether on Strava. A friend does the same commute as me and his elevation profile is hilarious when he uses his phone. On segments, there's no doubt that smartphones also potentially give you an advantage - their inherent Inaccuracy can give you that extra second you need to take a segment. In can, of course, also work against you. The only time I used my phone I blitzed a short segment - possibly the phone didn't record me as being in the segment until late then thought I was out of it early. I was going well but I don't think I took 3 seconds out of a 40s KoM. It was weeks before some very fit and light riders working together took it off me.

This is the time at which people started joining Strava. You won't see too many before that unless people went back to add older rides. We are only 2/3rds through 2013. Windy autumn weather is also good for segments - it's still warm and riders at still out (and possibly at their peak of fitness). I've noticed that a lot of KoMs are going now up here but best times are still mostly in 2012. No Olympic lanes or traffic.

Yep, a couple of days last week where I buried myself on segments, and would have got a podium place, only to find it either hadn't registered at all, or had registered a load of weird performance data which rendered the time suspect and caused me to have to flag the ride (too honest for my own good, me). As you can imagine, this was slightly frustrating, so I took the only sensible solution and availed myself of a Garmin Edge 800. I haven't noticed a single deviation so far so hopefully I don't have to worry about any more wasted efforts.

I've noticed that elevation readings can be a bit odd and inconsistent, but assumed that the phone's GPS just logs the route, and Strava or Google maps works out the elevation for that route based on their mapping data. Does the phone itself record its altitude as you move along?

Had two rides flagged, one for the second time

    http://app.strava.com/activities/19775192 x2 now
    http://app.strava.com/activities/15949941

Can only think the rides were flagged cause of a false top speed, unless somebody is doing it maliciously but there are no KoMs on the rides. I've asked Strava to look at the rides and have included a link from GarminConnect for the rides to clear the matter up.

No idea - but the stats I've looked at are ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if a local segment that's on one of the flatter bits of road but classified as a 4 climb was set up based on iPhone data

When did all the mouth breathers join strava?

Went through Richmond this morning, its a virtual layer cake of the same f**king segments. 5-6 for one short climb & that's before getting in the park...
