When did all the mouth breathers join strava?

Went through Richmond this morning, its a virtual layer cake of the same f**king segments. 5-6 for one short climb & that's before getting in the park...

The shortest route I take to commute to work is along the Cambridge Guided Busway (the cycle path alongside it), which is very popular with commuters as there is no road traffic, its pan flat and the tarmac's as smooth as a baby's bum.

BUT....It's the most boring ride in the world!

Anyway, this busway path is about 12 miles in length, there are 37 segments, most overlap and are almost identical!

This time last year there were no more than 10 segments on this route, it's getting to be a bit of a joke, I've given up caring about segments, I have a few that I know well and that I like to test myself against myself on, other than that I couldn't give a rat's arse about the leaderboards as most the segments are rubbish.

Probably okgo, he LOVES creating new segments where segments already exist.

Can only think the rides were flagged cause of a false top speed, unless somebody is doing it maliciously but there are no KoMs on the rides. I've asked Strava to look at the rides and have included a link from GarminConnect for the rides to clear the matter up.

But I imagine if it had not been flagged you would have the KOM on the segment where you go 123kph!

I have only looked at the first link but it certainly looks like you have so dodgy data, so fair enough that someone has flagged it, surely?

The dangers of such a short segment, 100m, and using the mobile app is you are almost guaranteed to get dodge KOM's.

Short segments really don't work, even with Garmin data. I am second on a short uphill sprint that follows on from a downhill, so is a real power sprint up the hill for 35 seconds. According to Strava I am 1 second behind the KOM, but I enter the segment at a faster speed and exit the segment at a faster speed than the KOM. I assume it comes down to where the sampling points are in relation to the start and finish of the segment, even if both of you have Garmin on the 1 second setting. You can move a long way in a second at 50kph (14m), so poss error of 28m.

A KOM on the commute is always a nice surprise so 3 is very good 8)
  • Got an email from Strava yesterday, informing me that someone flagged one of my rides. I mean, what's so unbelievable? Was it the half-mile flat-section in Port Seton where I was averaging 36.3 mph? At least Strava give you the chance to say, "Actually I am this awesome", now. In the old days I had rides just disappear.

I'm not sure why strava does that but I have the same here at home, i'm not listed as having ridden certain routes when I've actually ridden them hundreds of times.

Had that happen on one of my rides twice, first time I chose the ignore flag option, the second time I raised it to Strava to remove the flag and included the Garmin route from Connect and had the email back last night saying all was good.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Finally managed to do the Cedars Road Stomp segment in under a minute. It has been a benchmark for me since I started commuting. At first it was my nemesis and seemed like some impossible mountain I had to climb. Now, having seen a d cycled some of the short sharp ones in Surrey and Sussex it doesn't seem so bad. Still 57 seconds is a good time for someone like me!
    RIP commute...

  • Noticed a few impressive looking speeds cropping up on my bike computer, so I started a Strava run just before a few segments I've been wanting a good run at. Apparently I hit over 40 mph on the flat, knew it was a good run as I was in the 12T at the back.

Three KOMs (all close together), two of which are shared with a guy who has his own entry in Wikipedia.

The fact he has an accurate power meter may give some indication of how much more serious a rider he is than me.

  • Came within a hair's breadth of a podium on the Jamaica road sprint this morning, scuppered by the final red. Switching the performance graph between distance and time tells the story - irritating. Why do (did) people set these segments up to end at lights? Nonetheless my steady accumulation of Sranks points continues, at this rate I should crack the top 1000 somethime in 2020.

Felt a bit guilty the other day as picked up a 3rd place on the downhill ramp of the Bricklayers flyover, with an alleged average speed of 34.2 mph, despite not actually having got above 34 at any point, according to the performance chart. These short segments often seem to give dodgy average speeds, sometimes miles out.

Anyway I'm not doing owt about it as I don't like the options Strava gives you - basically flagging the whole ride (so it doesn't appear on any leaderboards) or cropping it (which would be just about OK but a bit annoying). Don't see why they can't just let you flag an individual segment. Anyway I don't want to flag the ride as I picked up a good podium later on too which I'm confident is legit from what my speedo was saying at the time.

Actually, while I'm moaning, have a look at the average gradient of that segment, no way is it -0.2%. One dodgy reading when the segment is first created and that's it, a spurious elevation/gradient forevermore.

Agreed that's a dodgy looking segment, most of the leaders' data looks a bit wrong include the KOM. Still, all good fun!

Agree with this, Strava is convinced I hit 58mph down the Embankment this evening which (although I was flying) is obviously absolute balls. Don't want to lose my whole trip though so what do I do?!

Suppose I should report it anyway as don't want to cheat anyone out of a good placing (incidentally I'm only second on the chart anyway!).
