  • Looking for a bit of Strava support here, something's confusing me:

Does anybody know why you don't get given a PR when you ride some segments for the first time? I've had a look on other forums (gasp) for the answer and many have mentioned that you don't get achievements for the "hidden" segments (unpopular ones), but even on unhidden ones I haven't been awarded a PR.

This came up after a few new rides I've been on recently where I've ridden loads of new segments, but they haven't been recorded as PR's. Odd.

Has anyone got some light to throw?

You only get a PR when you beat your own time, thus you won't get a PR until you've ridden a segment at least twice and bettered your own time.

Thanks for that, makes sense. I've only just started uploading club ride data onto Strava, and just assumed any new segment would become a PR!

I should probably try it on my good bike, reckon the KOM is within striking distance.

Is it possible in the big ring? I can't remember as I did it so long ago. I know a running club that go up and down Knightingale Lane for training  That doesn't sound like fun.

I was in the big ring yes.

I usually do Dark Hill in the small ring. On a compact. I feel weak...

PR on dark hill. Only 54s as I don't think I realise where it ends. I absolutely smashed this one though:

does Dark Hill carry along the flat at the top? I didn't realise it ends so far along
    SCR KoM here:

Dropped a few seconds for the sawyers climb, too in spite of the headwind. Not too bad after Box Hill yday

Dark Hill in the 50, but Nightingale in the 34: I'm fairly sure I'd stop and fall sideways if I attempted it in the 50.

Lost a KOM I didn't know I had overnight. Balham Back Streets (SJ Atomic?)... James Freeman's territory though so expect he'll hoover that up once the racing season is done. Picked up 2nd from SE10 to London Bridge though, and the 26 seconds to first is doable with kind lights or gears I reckon.

A 3rd, 4th and 10th on CS2 yesterday. Bit disappointed I only placed 18th on Bow flyover, need to find 4 seconds, which is going to be hard as can't imagine averaging 36mph over it. Did slow on the crest so maybe if I'd carried speed over might have shave a second or two.

you need a bloody good tailwind to wind it up on the bow flyover, and your wits about you with the traffic lights at the bottom
Sorry its not me it's the bike ;o)

I really thought I'd done enough on the London Rd segment for KOM, but I'll settle for joint 2nd with you.

I will have to have a real stab at that, its going to be quite hard to catch the KOM up unless there is a epic tailwind, my legs were screaming after half a mile, plus you have to time it right with the buses and potholes.

Bow flyover is on the route to/from Hog Hill. You therefore get some very fast groups heading over it, particularly heading back into town. Within 4 seconds of the KOM is good going!

For anyone that might be interested, I just asked Strava to correct the messed up data for Hillingdon. No more domination of the leaderboard by people cycling at over 50mph. Unfortunately, it does little to improve my standing.

Edit: the table keeps changing atm, so presumably they are still working on getting it right.
  • 500 miles logged on Strava since I started recording my rides in mid-June. 170-odd miles per month is hardly epic but not too bad considering it's only my commute.
  • Cycled in to work today for the first time since Saturday (was at work) and notice that my Strava recording is all skewy. The GPS hasn't tracked very well at all, although the times look about right for the journey (just short of 13 miles). Think I read about some issues recently - same thing?

Kinda annoying to get to work and check for trophies and get nothing cos it's cocked up (it's not because I was slow this morning either!!).

  • Just email them and they will sort it out in a couple of days: it happened to me where somebody mentioned that I had a KOM but wasn't appearing in my results.

Ta. Weirdly, I've also noticed that the 'total number of rides' in the Android Strava app is decreasing! I thought I was going mad but did my ride home yesterday as usual and my total rides went from 17 to 16! (only recently started using it...). I've just totted up the individual rides shown and it's 22. :/
