  • I'm just about to order a set of new hand built wheels from Spokesman, 32/32 spoke wheels using Novatec D771/D772 QR hubs and black Sapim Race spokes with brass nipples and Velocity Aileron rims.

Preparing for the Haldon Heroic http://www.justevents.org/index.php/events/haldon-heroic and decided to treat the CX to some new boots.

Settled on some Pacenti SL25 http://pacenticycledesign.com/index.php/products/rims/sl25-rim-detail laced onto some DT Swiss 240s (courtesy of a nice Danish guy on Ebay, bargain price!) Sapim D-Light spokes and brass nipples. Assembled by Mark at Spokesman Wheels http://www.spokesmanwheels.co.uk/, really nice friendly service. Decided to run WTB's Nano race 40C tyre http://theradavist.com/2014/05/monster-cross-wtbs-nano-40c-tire/#1 and I am running tubeless.

Wheels look really nice and even with the Nano tyres weighing in at 470g (each) vs. 240g (each) for the gatorskins the whole wheelset (inclusing discs and cassette) is about 300g lighter.

That's where I'm getting my wheels, that's good to know! Wheels look great.

Edit just realised I already said that - it's an age thing :(

Just tried to fit an 11 speed cassette to my Kinesis V3 CX disc wheels, it doesn't fit, I was sure that they were compatible, they are advertised as such, and no there wasn't a spacer fitted.
Could I file down the freehub?

I left out the 11T ring and fitted a spacer behind the big ring, and now I can do up the lock ring, having 11 speeds is not important, making it fit was.

They are definitely 11 speed compatible(use the spacer that comes with the wheels, You will have to index the gears again most likely and adjust the brakes) I've just been out on mine bloody cold, and the gear changes are fine, had the kinesis v3 for about 8 months, only problem I have now is squeaking come from the bottom bracket again, had this after a few months of buying the bike and evans sorted it out for me took out the bb cleaned and lubed the hell out of it, looks like it needs doing again, I wouldn't mind but I am not a hardcore cyclist probably do 30/40 miles a week if that so they should be lasting far longer than this, just sold old scwinn bike that had threaded bb and never had any problems with it did over 5000 miles?. How hard is it to remove bb and clean lube, am fairly mechanically minded what tools would I need for the press-fit bottom bracket removal from the cx team 20914?.

The cassette won't go on, can't get the last ring on, have tried many times. New freehub is £40, or I can leave it like it is with 10 speeds

Is it possible that you got sent a V2 of the wheelset?

My new set are marked 11 spped compatible and come with a spacer, possibly for the 10 speed Shimano. Fitted the OEM SRAM item again.

Weekly update, had to tighten the rear cassette today as it has now settled and was rattling.
BB7's fitted this morning. The rear was a doddle, but the front took 4 attempts to get right.

Dare I take off the snow tyres from the XLS?

It could be possible, although it was January last year so out of warranty. How could you tell, I weighed then when they arrived and the weights tallied?

I've just spent 2 hours trying to stop the new discs rubbing. Still one small rub from where the discs are offset from centre (both are the same) and no matter how many times I adjust them until they stop they start as soon as I apply the brakers again. I guess I'll have to live with it and see if it goes as they bed in.

Ref the new mark 3 Crosslights. The new ones appear to have a longer freehub as mine (OEM SRAM) keeps slopping around despite tightening it up twice. A spacer was supplied which I thought was for Shimano cassttes so I will fit that this weekend to see if that cures the problem.

I can confirm the Mk3 Crosslights have an 11 speed freehub as it is clearly marked "11 speed" and also you need to fit the supplied spacer for a 10 speed SRAM cassette.

  • Just got some new wheels from Mark Pollard (Spokesman) Velocity Aileron rims, Sapim race spokes and Novatec 771/772 hubs. These are replacing the original Ritchey wheels which will be pressed into Winter duties once I've replaced the freehub (for the second time)
Got to say it was a pleasure dealing with Mark, whole process took less than a week (paid last Sunday, delivered Friday)
Oh and they are tubeless ready so may give that a go at some point.

My old wheels were made by Mark. Excellent stuff, but watch the freehub as they only last 6 months if they are the alloy ones.

Thinking of removing the handlebar brakes, am i right in thinking I would need new outer cable for both sides?, or can I reuse the existing one?, it just looks to cluttered and I think by removing those levers the brakes might be a bit snappier.

Unthread the cables, unscrew the levers and fit inline adjusters is the quickest way, assuming you have the black one - if you have the newer silver one it already has adjusters and you may be able to just take out the levers and short section of outer - otherwise it's new outer all the way and rewrap

and yes, it will improve the brakes no end

    Hi!

I'm considering new wheels for the stock one's of my CX Pro.

Crosslights are obvious candidate, but I can go a little beyond that budget I think.

    Would a http://www.notubes.com/Iron-Cross-Pro-W ... P1339.aspx be a worthy upgrade over them?

Or anything else under 500 Euro?

These Iron Cross are for tubeless, is that what you want to run?

I may go either way so tubeless is fine with me. I'm more concerned with durability and longevity of wheels.

Not only are Iron Cross better tubeless but they wont go to higher pressures needed for road. I was advised by wheel builders that they shouldnt be run more than maybe 40-50psi

How about these? They're supposed to fit both road and cx tyres.

Has anyone looked at or opted for either of these wheelsets as an alternative to the Kinesis

    DT Swiss r24
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dt-swiss-r24-sp ... -wheelset/

    Fulcrum Racing Sport Disc
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/fulcrum-racing- ... -wheelset/

Pretty much all of the reviews on the Kinesis are people who have put them on Boardmans saying that they make a noticible difference but wondered how those other two compare

The alternatives get better all the time. They are both a little heavier than the Kinesis and I dont know how strong they are just from looking at specs on paper, but I have no reason to doubt that. I wonder if the DT wheels use the same freehub that is in the DT350 hubs - if they do then they would be a bargain as that is a great hub.

If so then even more of a bargain as the DT350 internals are are the same as the DT240

I've got R23's on the Canyon. Nothing to compare them to though as my last wheelset were Fulcrum R1's on a Boardman road bike

Unfortunately there isn't a great deal of information available about them. Both fairly respected wheel manufacturers but I'm guessing pretty new as there are not a great deal of reviews for either

Just had the following response from DT Swiss via their Facebook page when I asked which hubs were used in the R24's

    Hello
the hubs in the R24 SPLINE db are straight pull ones based on our 350 hubs with the pawl drive system.
    Best regards

Yeah - personally I would avoid straight pull (harder to obtain and replace in a hurry) and avoid bladed spokes (aero effect negligible for me and they are prone to side impacts) but it looks like extremely good value if you dont mind or even prefer those 'features'. If the freehub truly is the same (they say 'based on') then it is one of the most reliable and easiest to service hubs out there...
