They aren't desperate for food and the essentials.

They damn well would be if the current government achieved their targets of cutting welfare benefits.

Just the start I reckon, history repeating itself- another Tory government cutting everything and selling off whatever public assets they can(Harder for "Round 2", utilites and housing were a doddle), still sucking from the Milton Friedman liberal economics teat....

Rather inconvenient I thought Hackney and the east end was the ugly boil on London's backside, hence the Olympics and the gentrification of the area at the taxpayers expense?

I think folk have had enough, being squeezed in every direction by unemployment, no affordable housing etc. When you have nothing you've nothing to lose eh?

Lets be honest, if the previous government hadn't f*cked things up so much, and spent just about every penny we had on useless sh*t (£1.3 trillion !!) then the current government wouldn't have to make the cuts that they are doing. Basically, whatever you think of the coalition, they were handed a crock of sh*t to work with.

Whilst somewhat simplistic, the government needs to save money, or raise money. Which means either making cust, or raising taxes. Neither of which are going to be popular.

I'd agree with most of that.

And to the post about it being 'just kids looting', i'd suggest you're onto a bit of a red herring there. Unscrupulous individuals will always seek to leech off of these types of events. Even so, people in these areas are ultimately angry and it's not because they want new TV's.

The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer (this is an irrefutable fact). I guess the latter are reasonably justified in being disgruntled at these circumstances. Social deprivation is not something alot of us on here have truly been exposed to, let alone experienced it. If we were in their boots we'd be out on those streets, probably not looting, but expressing the anger they must feel.

My opinion - as a society which has been poisoned by the Chicago School (attributed mainly to Milton Friedman) free market ideologies, which stretch much further than simple economic policy, but rather shove an ever increasing wedge of inequality through our society, many of us have had enough.

    Eh?

These are scumbags jumping on the band wagon. There not expressing their anger they want cause destruction and loot for the sake of it.

There is no justification for what is happening.

    Any coppers on here?

We get it ok? Less coppers means less security - can you get to work now please?

I live around the corner from some of this - there are no, and I mean NO police to be seen anywhere. Had to run the gauntlet to get home to my family

You know what really saddens me?

I haven't seen a single rioter wearing a helmet. I think it's about time we considered compulsion, clearly the message is not getting across.

And some of them were smoking too...

    That's the floodgates opened now.
The BBC News channel has just announced that the rioting kids are getting around on bikes.

    Bloody cyclists
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Why aren't the police using rubber bullets or water cannon? They just stand in a line and let these little 5hits throw bricks at them, I don't get it. :?

Rubber Bullets were canned years ago.

Water cannons are illegal on mainland UK, and indeed the only ones in the British Isles are in Northern Island

Ah, that explains that one then.

The police have clearly lost control of the city, bring back water cannon . . . . quickly!

Apologies for my naivety regarding these issues

It just seems to me that if this happened in any other country the Police would be better equipped. Instead they're completely overrun with no way of dealing with this standing in lines watching people loot and throw bricks.

Maybe it's something to do with health and safety, you can't hurt anyone even if they're burning buildings in the capital city.

Looks like you may get your bike, Evans Cycles in Camden is apparently being looted as I type!

Theres something in that. Look at the handling of the anarchist riots in the heart of the city and the infamous kettling. It seems to me that the police are afraid to take action for fear of political retribution.

Burning peoples houses not knowing if they are inhabited or not= shocking. I saw the riots in toxteth which was nothing more than the spread of afro/caribbean criminality under a thin poltical veneer but this doesnt even have a semblance of political context; pointless violence for the sake of pointless violence. The black working class version of the bullingdon club.

    • Evans cycles chalk farm rd being looted 50 youths no police #londonriots #chalkfarm

    • Police moving in on youths dispersing up Adelaide rd. riot police securing Evans cycle. Really tense #ChalkFarm #londonriots

As much as I'm going ot get flamed for this, the situation is now extreme, it's now time to bring in the army to bolster the numbers of the police.

Millions of £££ of danage is being caused, people are being indiscriminantly attacked and lives are now at risk.

Treat fire with fire. Anyone in the area of the riots should expect to be subject to the same treatment. If you're in the area to spectate, then tough, you're becoming an obstruction.

When the chief of Poliice says "right boys, I'm putting my job on the line here, but it's time to take the gloves off" he'll gain a great deal of respect.

And to make things worse, I've got to drive to Ipswich now !!!

"Oh boo hoo, it's the tories fault, cutting the poor people's benefits. I dont blame them going out rioting blah blah blah" People with this kind of mentality clearly don't understand the mentality of these people living off the state. If you gave them double theyd spit in your face and rob your wallet. There's no respect in society anymore, either you put the respect into them using national conscription or you beat them to the ground and let them know this kind of behaviour is unexceptable. Let's face it, all this liberal rubbish, it's working isn't it?

Try living a day in Somalia then come back and say you live in poverty. Very priviliged wherever you live in the UK.

Welcome to London :?: :?: what does this say to all those people that are having second thoughts about visiting for the 2012 games or generally thinking about a holiday. It must be time to bring in the army or the "French" Riot police who do know how to deal with the scum causing the problems (we used to shoot looters didnt we ??).

I find it rather bemusing some people are so short-sighted as to blame this on a coalition government who’ve been in power for barely over a year. What’s going on is the result of failed social policy from the previous government and the one before that. These youths that are running riot are probably third generation immigrants who only seem to be able to communicate in some sort of pseudo gansta speak. Employment prospects? They are barely educated! I heard Ken Livingstone on the radio lastnight trying to make it political, blaming Cameron. Well Ken, if you want to go down that route Labour have governed the current sixteen year olds of this country longer than anyone else. See, utterly useless point scoring.
