  • I bought a canyon grand canyon AL 7.9 last week. I was very impressed with the speed of delivery. Bike was easy to assemble straight out of the box. Took it out for it's first spin last night and I was very impressed. It is a flyer. Very quick to accelerate, and a lot quicker up the technical climbs compared to my Stumpjumper 26er. The high bottom bracket made pedaling through the rough stuff possible as well. The bike feels a lot more stable at speed than the Stumpjumper. I like the CTD settings on the Fox forks as well. Overall I am very impressed and would definitely order another bike from Canyon.

This is the older 170mm version. The current one is 180mm. The RFX is 180/200mm and comes with triple clamp forks if you buy it complete. I'm 5'10"ish and wanted something free-ridey. I think in a medium it's a bit too long to feel like a freeride bike. It just feels like a trail bike on steriods so is pretty planted on fast descents, but doesn't 'pop' as well as I'd like it to. For AM duties, getting your usual size would be great but if you want something more flighty, a smaller model might be better.

Phew - just saved this from dropping off the front page :-)

(and just pressed submit instead of 'full editor', sorry!!)

I do actually have a genuine query though. Does anyone have any feeling for how well the bottom bracket shells are faced on Canyons? Only I've been trying to cure a creak for ages, greased everything, replaced chain (it needed it anyway) and middle ring (now double & bash) and it only creaks when pedalling heavily (and also when standing), so, it's not the pivots, saddle etc. Think I've also eliminated the pedals but at the moment my logic escapes me on this

So today I bought a new bottom bracket, in the hope that this will cure it. But I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get the shell faced before I fit it.

Don't know about shell facing, I've had one frame done before but I can't remember why... My first thoughts would be the crank/BB interface. Clean and get to proper tightness. If not that, you've probably covered everything else by the sounds of it.

    Hi chaps/chapettes,

On the brink of ordering a yellowstone 4.0 but a little worried about sizing. I am 6'2", inside leg 36", 95kgs. My body shape is 'all arms and legs'. Canyons sizer comes out at L(20"), while very bike sizing advice says 22" for someone with my dimensions. Obviously Canyon know their geom so their sizer should be something to put faith in.

Is there anyone out there with (roughly) my dimensions riding a Canyon hardtail and can offer some words of wisdom?

    Cheers,
    Ste

Canyons do size up at the large end ie there small is as big as some companies medium. I am 6 foot and my medium fits me fine I have sat on a large and it felt like a five bar gate but thats just me others will find different. I wouldnt worry too much there is a free 30 day swap if you feel its too big or small they will pick the bike up and drop off the next size you want.

  • Hello

Another new imminent Canyon owner here.

I recently noticed a crack in the frame of the seat tube (just above the weld) on my 2002 Specialized Enduro FSR.
I've had that bike for 10 years and it has served me well. I can't believe I threw the invoice out last year. I've been told that Specialised have a lifetime warranty on their frames. Gutted !

Anyone, I have ordered the Canyon AM 8x in mamba green. I'm 6'2 with 33inch inside leg. The sizing tool said Medium frame, but I contacted Canyon UK who recommended Large, so thats what I have ordered. This bike is listed in their Express section, so hopefully with a bit of luck I might have it next week (I know they have been stock taking all this week)

The new 2013 bikes will be on the site very soon (a couple already are). I think its the Nerve AL+ that replaces the AM in 2013. I just couldn't face waiting until potentially November until I got it.

In any case, the AM 8.0x still looks damn good value to me vs what I could buy in a LBS over here. I did look at some discounted 2011 / 2012 Giant Trance bikes with heavy discounts, but still the spec on the Canyon won me over.

Many thanks to all of you who have posted specs / reviews on your own Canyons. I have spent many evenings reading through posts.

    Cheers
    Al

I'm 6'1" and I got a large hardtail and the size is spot on. I used their online sizing tool and it suggested large.

I have a Torque 6. It's a great bike, but it's absolutely a DH rig. I would never, ever, use it for XC of any sort. Far too short, far too much travel and it's really heavy: more than 17 kg. Anyone that recommends it as a general bike, whether you have it set up at 180 or 200 mm, needs their head examined.

Now in the Alps, or with an uplift? Different story: it's epic! :0)

Canyon UK say large, so that is what I shall get! Though typically, the pound has crashed compared to the euro and the costs have gone up over night! :(

When the 2013 bikes are up on their site for sale, can you still get the remainder of the 2012 stock via the website?

they usually manage to sell the majority of their stock, but it could be worth keeping an eye out here http://www.canyon.com/_uk/outlet/list.html?type=mtb

Don't think they have gone up that much. The canyon am 8.0x I ordered last week was 1817. List price now is 1826 gbp.

I've had confirmation it should be dispatched week 42 (ie just one week to wait).

You know you have thirty days to return it? So if 2013 nerve al+ looks amazing (when it appears on their site) you could always cancel and reorder. However I was told I would not get a 2013 bike delivers in under one month. I couldn't risk waiting more than a month for a new bike as I've cracked the frame on my only bike I own!

I still think the ams look damn good value when you look at the kit u get spec wise.

I've been thinking about buything the very same bike!

Have you got yours yet? If so, What do you think of it?

And to anyone out there who has the Nerve AM 8, What do you think of it? Some friends have worried me into thinking its not going to stand up well to my abuse and that its too Xc orientated but I dont think so. Help!

Even the Nerve XC isn't really that XC orientated what with 120mm of travel all round. the AM has 140 (AM+ 2013 150m).

The Nerve AM might go up aswell as down but I wouldnt say its "XC orientated" at all.
  • cheers for that. i might hold off to see next years models then. they should be up on their site this week ive been told.

The UPS tracker says it should be at my house tomorrow. So, I've booked a days annual leave :D

Hopefully if I get it set up in the morning (although UPS don't state time), there will be time for a little bimble over at Sherwood Pines.

I've even downloaded and read the manuals and unpacking instructions from their site so I am ready to crack on as soon as the courier arrives!

    Hi Sneakers,

I have been riding a Nerve AM for more than a year now. In some ways your friends might have a point. It's really a long travel trail bike rather than a hardcore AM like a Remedy, for example. I've taken mine to Alpine bike parks and had a great time with it, staying mid-pack with the big boys, but I didn't regret also getting a full on DH rig for this years trip.

For the UK, in my opinion, it's just about perfect. It's a great compromise between weight, handling and durability. But if you're really rough with your equipment then it might be a little too XC. Maybe?

  • I had emailed at the begining of the week and they said later this week. I do hope they've not lied to me!

Im excited for you upnorthal, Let me know how you get on.

Its not that im too rough with my gear, Id say its more down to bad technique, I just dont want to be let down as I like drops and steeps yet also need to be able to ride for days on the uphill/flat so I can get into the mountains too.

My missus just got a mega comp and I had a wee bash on it and the weight feels ok actually so maybe I should just hold off for a new season strive.

God, Decisions decisions. I dont remember buying a bike being this hard when I was younger!

I have a nerve XC and regularly ride off drops and down steps. Haven't broken it so far* **

    * except the wheels, and that was due to not seeing (?) a large rock on an otherwise smooth trail

** to be updated after this weekend when I'm going to Coed y brenin, Snowdon, Penmachno etc etc.

Either Nerve is plenty of bike for "Coed y brenin, Snowdon, Penmachno etc etc"!! There is noting at any venue that needs something more heavy duty.

I would worry a bit more about the Antur Stiniog black runs at speed, but again you could ride them more slowly on an AM with no problems. The other centres are XC through and through.

Looks like my XC9 remains pretty much unchanged - dropped the monolink seat/post, Mavic rather than DT wheels and updated to the new CTD shock/fork. Geometry the same.

Price has come down a bit as well although you can never tell with the exchange rate. Happy that I got my 2012 model for £200 less in the sale.
  • Well, my Nerve 8.0x turned up yesterday (a little later than expected). I can't really add much to what others have already said. I'm a tiny bit annoyed about paying extra for the so called 'bike guard' cardboard box - but in the grand scheme of things thats not a problem.

The only issue was the dropper post would not raise. The internal pressure was 10psi for some reason. I set it to 250 psi as per the little sticker and it works perfectly now.

I've looked at the new Nerve AL+ 8 and I think I am happy to keep last years model. I need to make my mind up what I want to do today, as the bike has not been properly outside yet (i.e I can still return it).

The Nerve AL+ has the 150mm travel on the rear now. I also see it has a bolt through on the rear wheel. They don't seem to have the 2 X10 gear option in this years range. I do love the look of the Stealth reverb post on the 2013 bike.

But, thats not reason enough to warrant a return and paying extra for what the Nerve+ 8.0 would cost in my opinion.

    Cheers

Ordering an AL 8 end of November .

Gonna have to respray that red QR collar black tho, and remove those red stickers on the rims.
