Why do so many people like Geraint other than the fact he is British?

As a random aside, Kennaugh finished 87th out of 159 at the Giro.

'Fraid I'm not one of those you has to support British riders just 'cos they are. Same applied when we followed cricket - couldn't stand Botham (he's up there with Armstrong in my opinion). However, Thomas is ok and I'm warming slightly to Millar (shock) but can't take to Wiggins mainly for the business about him leaving Garmin for Sky but I also read his book and thought he was a bit of a winger. I'll obviously have to support the Essex boy but can't remember his name.
    Others:
Tommy - always good for a break of the front.
    Sylv Chavenel
    Gilbert
Leif Hoste with the sculptered features.
Tony Martin with his baby face.
    Pinotti
Anton, Txrukka and Nieve (Mr Snow) for guts and determination as David Duffield used to say.
    Hesjedahl
    Haussler
    Garate
    Kiriyenka

And, like Cleate Eastwood - Pantani per sempre.

And as an aside, other than possibly the safety aspect, WGAF about having a popular sport?

The more popular a sport is, the more TV coverage it gets. I would have thought that was pretty bleeding obvious.

I see you have yet to discover TV over the internet.

Riders didn't like him cos he was a moaning bustard.

Sure sure. There are a few names in here that I've via some pro's are not well liked by the riders at all.

I've seen him interviewed on tv and seems a nice decent fella - with a bit of a cheeky chappy appeal

Indeed. And that's why I only support white cyclists; the brown ones should be working from dusk til dawn on my farm for my leftover pizza crusts.

200 years ago slavery was acceptable; 100 years sexism and racism were, and look at how we (I hope) feel about those viewpoints today . In 100 years people nationalism will doubtlessly be added the above list.

Why is nationalism a bad thing? I'm not talking to the point of extremes like the National Front, but say the average poster on this thread......

I like to see British cyclists do well.....its because they are British-a common ground if you will. Success breads success generally, so the more successful Brits are in the pro ranks, the more successful cycling in general will be in this country. Do you really need it explaining as to why this is a good thing? Unless of course you get you kicks out of setting yourself apart (or superior) to others by participating in a niche sport?

How many years from now do you think saying "You Sir are a c@ck" will be unacceptable?

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

By the same logic, why is sexism a bad thing if, instead of actively oppressing women by chaining one to the kitchen sink, you just for e.g. ignore the ideas of a female colleague at work? Or make sexist jokes every now and then?

Because sexism is discriminatory and useless........whereas I've just detailed above just a couple of ideas on how a pride in nationality can be benefitial........you're clutching at straws now mate!

Why do you troll so much on here by the way? Is it becuase you were/are a reasonable cyclist but never reached the level you wished?

No, I was always crap at cycling, I've never thought any differently. I troll mostly because I find it amusing, but TBH only about a quarter of my posting is deliberate trolling - the rest is because there is so much utter cack spouted by muppets on here that I just can't help myself. Still, it's a victimless crime.

By the time British sporting success has increased the demand for televised cycling such that it pays to show third tier cycling events (first and second are already on Eurosport) they'll be streaming HD over the interwebs.

    How about you OP?

I like Cancellara too- his power at Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders last year were awesome!

Used to find David Millar really annoying in interviews, but now I think he's great and riding strong. Probably my very favourite at the moment. And Nicholas Roche is doing well at representing my homeland as well. Obviously couldn't not mention Mark Cavendish either. Just awesome!

Others I love to see doing well are Andy Schleck, Thomas Voeckler, Jens Voigt, Carlos Sastre, Thor Hushovd and Big George Hincapie

I’ve gotta go with Canc! Pure power and aggression! Strangely I’m not too fussed about Cav and I certainly don’t think he is charismatic! Still a bloody good sprinter like! Cipo! Now there’s charisma ;)

I like all the one day stars but have to pick Gilbert for his brilliance and guts.
Basso as he gives me hope that you can win a GT clean.
Pinotti for his take on cycling in general.
    Freire for being Freire.
    Pooley. Talented and cute.

I have no time for most GT riders, but Contador especially leaves me feeling cold.

I've lost track of all the doping scandals of the last decade but thought Basso had been done for doping in the past and / or admitted to "trying to dope"?

    Gilbert
    Contador
    Cancellara
    Voeckler
    Steegmans
    Cavendish

Was impressed with Christophe Kern going for it last week too. Note the lack of wheelsuckers, like Evans and Wiggins, in that list.

He was banned for doping. Paul Kimmage had a spat with Lance at a press conference at the ATC last year when he asked him what it was about dopers like Basso he admired so much.

    Have a look on YT.

I like people I wish I didn't, like Vino and Scarponi. Why, why do I do that?
I like watching Bertie attack, but it's spoiled by what probably fuels the attacks. I quite like the Schlecks and Canc. Gilbert is fierce to watch, and def like Evans.
