I'm trying to drum up interest for one. It's not very successful, there's lots of roadies, not many people interested in proper bikes, even fewer who aren't on rotations.

Problem is we're a tiny college, part of the uni of London, that itself doesn't have a club either and it's not practical to start one within it.

Meh, it's not the end of the world though.

Ahhh, that makes sense I guess. Worth asking around anyway. If you don't try, nothing will happen!

Yeah, I've figured if worst comes to worst my housemate is mountaineering something, might try and see if I can piggyback into that and drag some of the other mountain bikers in too. Then at least it's part of some society and should see a bit of funding from the union, which would be nice as then they'll maybe pay for BUCS entries hopefully  Better than nothing though.

Bonus, apparnetly the MC subs is only about £10 or something like that, much nicer than hockey ones

Hmmm, rotations plus small UoL College = St George's or the RVC, you going to be a doctor or a vet AB?

    It'd be a vet, couldn't be a doctor. I hate people.

Been a while since I updated this, a lot has changed since the summer with more goodies to come :D Like my 456 thread I'll update with piccies tomorrow :) First major change was my super dooper Tuned and Kashima'd RP23, man alive its amazing what a custom tune can do, the bike has been transformed and it feels even more planted than before and the increased compression has made it pedal even better too, epic wins! I think the shock combined with the 4cross Nobby Nics have made the single biggest difference to the bike, besides the reverb, the grip is insane and even round a soaking wet and blown out Cannock Chase and those bloody lethal shiny pebbles everywhere, it was awesome. I'll be putting some hans dampfs on the 456 after crimbo so it'll be interesting to see how they compare.

Coupla small changes, fitted an Xtr Shadow Plus mech after I trashed my Xt, simply put its bling as hell, works a treat and the drivetrain is now pretty much silent, awesome piece of kit and initial impressions of the Zee mech on the 456 have me sold on them completely, such a simple, but brilliant idea. Fitted the lime green crest decals too, so now shes all colour co-ordinated and looking pretty new again. I'm in the process of going clipped in after years on flats, so I've had Xt Trail pedals for commuting on the 456, which be switched to the HD this weekend for the first foray into the wild, which can only go well

Last of all and the thing I'm majorly excited about, I've finally got a works components headset with an external bottom cup and -1.5 degree offset, should lower the bb a touch and slacken her out to about 66 degrees. Slacker is just better in my eyes, so hopefully it'll remedy the short wheelbase abit and bring it inline with the 456, ready to shred come spring time!

Been using them on the turbo trainer too, and I quite liked it, and I figured I very rarely have to dab on stuff, even when it gets pretty gnarly, so if I don't use flats for their main advantage of being easy to sling a foot out, why am I still using them
  • do what i did and put the multi release cleats on your shoes. then if you need to clip out quick and your brain is still in flats mode when you pull up they still pop out.

has defo saved me from getting muddy a few times!

How much upward force is required for the vertical release to let go? Thought about these myself to reduce injury from crashing.

More than just lifting your foot and it's adjustable, I started mine really loose and haven't just pulled up out of them yet. I found that multi release cleats allowed me to twist and lift my ankle up at a more natural angle than single release.

So is there much risk of accidental release?
  • not really, even at the lowest tension setting you have to give them a decent tug (oh er) to release them. slightly more force than it takes to twist out.

i think iv got mine set about 4 clicks on from lowest. and it doesnt come out while im riding. only when i need to dab a foot.

Think i'll invest in some multi release cleats next time round then, thanks guys.
  • Looking forward to seeing pictures of it. I think what it really needs is some coloured brake pad holder bolts!

I'm quite happy with standard ones, can't really see them with ice tech pads in anyway  I honesty can't think of anything to change on this really once the headset is in, not bling for the sake of it anyway, most of the bolts of any meaning are ti already and I'm trying to keep the green abit more subtle.

here's where i got mine. The only different between the multi and normal release are the multi has a chamfered edge to allow the upwards release. you can see it when you put them side by side.

  • Crank Brothers Mallets. All the best of both clipless (easier access and exit than SPD), big flat platform for when you can't quite get back in. There's a reason that a majority of pro downhillers use them............

My experience of crank bros products has been shocking, they product looks great but works ok for 5 minutes before imploding, plus they weigh a ton and are massively overpriced. I have some xt trail pedals and have been impressed with them on the turbo trainer and on the 456 commuting this week, so they're going on the HD this weekend to see how I get on offroad :)

Benpinnick, gunmetal doesn't really work on the frame tbh, originally I was a fan but wish I'd had black hubs tbh, but they work really well and I don't have the cash to buy a new wheelset til after uni and with the new XX1 group needing a new free hub body I'm guessing anything similar thing will be needed of shimano make a similar groupset, so the wheels are staying put for now.

Aye, this. Started my clipless years on cb pedals and once they blew up (destroying my crank threads in the process) i binned them and went shimano. I never liked the loose feel of crank brothers (didnt like the lack of tension and high float). Never felt positive enough, and i could never tell when they were about to unclip if i moved my feet around mid trail or whipping.
  • Strange, I have Iodine carbon bars and Mallets on both my MTBs and have never had any issues whatsoever. I'm probably slightly bigger than you and harder on my stuff as well ;)

I love the float, the ease of engagement and release and the excellent platform.

I've seen so many cb pedals fail under average weight riders that it just put me off them. Likewise my Joplin was pretty poor and their bars feel abit weird to me, and it's too expensive too. I got my xt trails for £45 and I know from my old dx flats they will run forever with little to no work. Easton are now my default choice for bars and stem, reverb for seatpost, schwalbe tyres (despite being sponsored by conti ) and shimano drivetrain and brakes, I find stuff that works for me and then tend to stick to it. Ill definitely have another Ibis again that's for sure!

I'm 69kg and mine snapped the axle.

M520 on MTB and R540 (still have them) on the road bike.

I prefer CB, you prefer Shimano. Get over it.

I'm sorry, i can't, the stupid burns too much.

I'm 95kg and never had an issue.

Lawman, same here. Although I'm Hope for hubs, stems, headsets, bottom brackets and brakes, Reverb for seatposts, Shimano for drivetrain (with the exception of FSA SLK cranks), CB for bars and pedals, Charge for the magic Spoon.

Wow, if i were you i'd rush straight out now and buy a lottery ticket because never having had an issue with a cb pedal must mean you're one of the luckiest people alive.

Took some pictures with the 456 after work today, the HD was clean until I rode it to work earlier in the week, bloody rain!

Not the best picture, I need to chop the steerer down abit once the works headset is in.

As some of you probably know I'm a big Fox fan, and when kit looks and performs this good, I see no reason to use anything else. The kashima shock is probably my favourite part on the bike right now, shiny!!! :D

I had my doubts about whether I'd made the right choice with tyres, or it was these or Hans Dampfs, and they will have a lot to live up to after the gatestars. Love the world champs stripes too and the tarty green stickers I've had for an age but only just fitted

I've only ever owned one other piece of Xtr, an old rear mech I had years ago that a mate found for me, came across it in the garage t'other day and boy times have changed since the M950 groupset! Clutch mechs are awesome and this was something I knew I'd regret not buying if I got xt, me likes the shinyness! :D

I quite like this photo so thought I'd put it in this thread too
