Dumb question, but do you need some sort of hanger to mount a front mech on these carbon frames? I'm in contact with Carbonzone about ordering a FM028 and Echo says they are out of stock of the Front Derailleur hanger?

What front mech type will i need?

    Thanks

You need a 'band on' front derrailleur rather than a clamp on type as the carbon frames don't have the brazed on bracket like most Alu frames do. If you already have a clamp on type you can buy a seperate clamp, see below for links:

Ah, makes sense. So need a band-on mech. Just that on my carbon Isaac theres a braze on mount on the frame itself.

Think I'm about ready to order! :)

I've got my groupset and spare set of wheels free so all I need now is a frame, pretty sure I want an FM015

    2009719194633262.jpg

or the De Rose/Ribble Stealth/RB004 from carbonzone ebay

    P1140396.jpg

There seems to be various outlets to get the FM015 from, HongFu bikes, Dengfu bikes, gotobike, ebay etc etc. After reading the roadbikereview forum most poeple seem to go with hongfu and the FM015 or FM028 but there are tonnes of other frames available so why are these two so popular?

There also seems to be a load of frames from ebay user carbon_bicycle for only £250 delivered such as this one (there's a bunch of others too)

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Full-Carbon-12K-5 ... 585wt_1139

So why is no one talking about these frames which are £100 cheaper than carbonzone and the FM015 or FM028? Does anyone have one? [/img]

    Pete,

Think it's because the FM015 and 028 are currently the most advanced chinese frames on the market. Older (cheaper) frames will do the job no problem but they'll probably be more uncomfortable and heavier than the 2 we're talking about, but if that doesn't bother you, go for it.

There are more on the verge of being released. The FM037 is supposedly the chinese 'aero' frame in the same vain as the Spesh Venge and Scott Foil.

Also this looks pretty nice, don't have a model number though. 880 gms = light

OK so the cheaper ones are just older versions. I've had a look at the FM039 but I'm pretty sceptical of this one, I mean have they just made it look aero or have they actually done some wind tunnel tests, it looks pretty heavy too.

That one on picasa you posted looks pretty smart! Where have you seen this one? Another consideration was an FM757 from Gotobike, all internal routing too.

Yeah Pete, I agree about the aero frames, sounds like jumping on the band wagon to me. I saw that 880gm frame on weight weenies

at the risk of slightly derailling the topic - does anyone have a large side-on pic of an FM015 frame & forks, or even better, a vector silhouette? I'd like to work up my paintscheme and it would save me having to trace!

There's a good article in this week's CW about the tech behind carbon frames, worth a read I think

Yeah I did notice that but haven't read it yet, what was the general jist? I'd find it hard to believe that the Chinese frames are sub standard, especially when some are the same as the big names.

I read it in 3 mins in the co-op. More detail on this thread tbh. Very basic.
Just explained the production process and how Giant make a hell of a lot of frames...

I guess we'll never know but the materials used can vary in quality and durability. For example a lower grade resin can degrade over time and change its characteristics by being exposed to UV etc.

In previous life I used to make composite hi-tech bits from Carbon, Kevlar and fibreglass and I know that the materials you choose and how you apply them will determine the products weight, strength and long term durability

Again, not saying this actually happens and even if it does the quality is probably still high enough for most of us, especially considering the lower cost.

Personally I prefer to spend more money on a known brand just like I do with the rest of my cycling gear or with my sunglasses...a sucker, I know...

Normally I would agree but after reading the roadbikereview threads and seeing De Rosa use one of these generic frames I can't see the justification in spending more. It's just not worth £1000 for a paint job

    Anyways yada yada yada,

    Anyone got any more pics?

Hi Mate, here is a blueprint for the FM015 you can work over the top of that as it has dimensions on, that's what I did for my graphics:

If you want a contact of where I got my vinyl done let me know as he was great for mine.

Mcrdave, I'd be interested in the vinyl contact. Ordered my matt fm028 and want to get some decals done when it arrives.

    Got a pic of yours?

    Sweet mcrdave

I'd seen yours before earlier in the thread, nice to be reminded. Carbonzone don't seem to have the FM015 listed, did you ask them for this model? Did you use ebay or work outside ebay to save a bit of cash? I'm guessing this frame came plain matt black and you got the stickers done separately? I'm tempted by the FM015 and the De Rosa which is now back on ebay. Just need some cash . . . . .

Edit, just realised the De Rosa version adds more £££ to the build as it has a BB30 bottom bracket and I don't think I could live with myself if I bought this one and didn't use a BB30 chainset sigh

    Damit - no it's a fizik cirano

Pete - can't remember re. Carbonzone I think it was listed but I'm sure if you contact them they'll have them. It was Matt black yep. Took a bit longer as they didn't have them in stock bit was still quick.

Not sure if you can run a non bb30 crank on a 30 frame. I would go for the 30 version though if I was to buy again.

I think you can get BB30 adapters to run non BB30 chainsets. I know Campagnolo don't do a BB30 chainset but have BB30 cups to use on BB30 frames
boy, that was a lot of BB30's
  • For the guys who ordered the FM028 (RB002) from Carbonzone - did the frame come with a rear mech hanger and if not which one did you get to sort it?
