He should have just bought an 18" frame instead, it won't make a difference with shorter stem, due to the height of the frame from the back, you still have to bend far to reach the handle, if the bike is bigger than your average size, for example, if you need an 18" and you get a 20" and then that increases the size all over by 2inches, then shortening the stem won't make any difference, the frame needs shortening but you can't do it because of it's size, that's what I worked out with the Halfords bike fitter anyway who was building my bike.

You still havent worked this out, have you? Big people need big bikes. Small people need small bikes. He has likely got longer legs than you, meaning that the 20 inch fits him better.

The Formulas are on, they seem really nice but I haven't really ridden them yet. Far easier to install than the Avids too.

The Formulas are really nice, I've just been messing around a car park, brakes bedded in and I can now do an endo and than ride backwards. skills.

Everything in will be what's going on and green is what's on there that I've upgraded already.

Frame: Carrera Fury 2009 18" 7005 T6 Heat treated aluminium (current model)
Fork: Suntour Epicon 120mm with 15mm Q-loc (basically 120mm air, with the equivalent of a 15mm maxle)
    Front Derailleur: Shimano SLX M661
    Rear Derailleur: SRAM X7
    Shifters: SRAM X9
Cables: Jagwire Ripcord Sealed Cables Blue
    Chainset: Shimano SLX triple 175mm
    Chainrings: 22/32/44
Bottom Bracket: Shimano Hollowtech II SLX
    Cassette: Shimano XT 11-34
    Chain: KMC X9 93
Pedals: Superstar Nano Thru Pin Lightning Blue
Front Brake: Formula Oro K18 White with 160mm rotor
Rear Brake: Formula Oro K18 White with 160mm rotor
    Brake Levers: Formula Oro K18
Hydraulic Hoses: Superstar in Blue a possibility
    Handlebars: Alloy Oversize 680mm
Stem: Alloy 31.8mm (not sure on the length but I might go shorter)
    Headset: Cartridge Bearing
Grips: Superstar Supagrippa Blue with White Lockrings and Bar Ends (currently without white bar ends and i need new ones anyway)
    Rims: Mavic XM317 DiscBlack
Front Hub: 15mm Axle Cartridge Bearing
    Rear Hub: Shimano Deore
Front Tyre: Maxxis Advantage 2.25 Folding
Rear Tyre: Maxxis Advantage 2.25 Folding
    Saddle: Fizik Gobi XM
    Seatpost: Alloy 31.6mm
    Seat Binder: Hope QR Blue

The new drivetrain is due to wear (I've done over 1600 miles in under 6 months) and other damage other than front mech and shifters. I'm not really going to do any other upgrades as I'm saving for a full sus after this new kit has gone on and I need new helmets (trail and a full face), shoes (AM41) and a new Hydration pack as well as jerseys and more shorts.

nice. looking forward to pics. You keeping the hardtail? or planing to swap the new components to a new fs frame in the future. Ive just been paid, so time for a new stem, rear tyre and peddles i think. Keep feeling like my bars to wide aswell, thinking about chopping them down abit. But it might just be because i ride the narrower hybrid everyday. (commuting)

I'm keeping the hardtail and saving for a brand new AM full sus. the fury will probably turn into a single speed for commuting.

camp, really? It's currently looking pretty normal. No mudguards other than a inner tube through the fork like a neoguard and no bottle cages either. Just white, blue and black.

I completely forgot about eBay before, so I'll probably now get a X9 rear mech, X9 shifters, XT front mech and as I got a brand new X7 from CRC for £20, I can probably sell it for a profit. :D

Everything on order to arrive soon, I've got the SLX chainset (need an inner chainring), X7 rear mech, Jagwire Cables and XT front mech.

    To arrive next week:
    XT cassette
    KMC X9L Chain Silver
KMC Missing Links for on the trail repairs
    SRAM X9 shifters
    A couple of mech hangers
    SLX inner chainring
Superstar Integrato Blue headset (out of stock so arriving sometime in the future)
New grips from superstar, blue with white lockrings and CNC barends
    Pedal pins

I can't wait for tuesday as I can start fitting everything. I've already got some new pins which are 2mm longer and they look deadly. Awesome grip hopefully.

So wider bars and a shorter stem is planned. Nuke Proof Warhead 760mm 20mm rise bars and an On One Ultralight CNC Stem. I'm getting a couple of cheapo stems to try out too, in 60mm and 70mm

I like it but to me its way over crowded as you dont have much room in the main frame triangle either.

All that cr@p went ages ago. It's looking pretty slim now. One bottle cage has gone and the only reason the single one's left is for the commute, pump gone, saddelbag gone and full mudguards gone too. It's looking pretty slim now. The only mudguard I've got is the inner tube Neoguard copy I made. Once everything is on then i'll update you lot with pics on the front page and a spec list.

The original post has been updated as it's changed some much from stock and will continue to as time goes on.
  • How you finding the Formulas? I got a pair for the Talon and love them! Coming from own-brand hydros, they're really impressive.

Unfortunately I managed to warp the rear rotor and haven't got it properly straight (doubt I ever will). Just waiting to make up an order on chainreaction and I'll have to add a rotor.

Not that I'm biased but Blue parts add at least 25%

Have you decided whether your going for the blue hoses yet? I am contemplating it for mine and probably should have doen the rear one when I rebuilt the caliper after it seized.

Although that did teach me that you need to do a full bleed after you refill the system rather than trying to refill using the bleed process and ending up with a sponge for a brake

I'm going for the blue hoses for sure, now.

The Formulas really are excellent. They're very light for the cash even at normal price but unbelievable at the bargain £109 I got them for. They've got loads of modulation, lots of power and i'd buy again for sure.

The bike and all the new bits performed brilliantly. I'm really happy with it. It's currently sitting in the garage sparklnig for me to take it out tomorrow. The KMC Missing Link made cleaning the drivetrain dead easy, I can't believe what i've been missing out on.

I've just ordered for the Fury:
    Sunline V1 OS Blue 745mm 19mm Rise
Superstar Zephir Stem 70mm Blue Faceplate
Superstar Hoses Blue with appropriate fitting kit
    Squirt Chainlube
    Supstar Brake Pads Kevlarand Sintered
Formula 180mm Post Mount Hardware Kit
    SDG Bel Air RL Black
Nuke Proof Warhead Layback Seatpost 31.6mm Black
    Specialized Henge SL 130mm

I'll sell on the saddle that's least comfy as I still haven't found my 'golden saddle'.

The Fury should be 'done' now. :D

I think i started down the slippery slope when I put my first bit of pointless bling on. I think it was headset spacers

Soon, the only original bits left on the bike will be the frame, wheels and forks. :D

All the new stuff is on now and it's riding really well. I can't wait for tomorrow to hit the DH course. I've got some proper gear for DH now too: kneepads, elbowpads and a damn slick looking full face 8) If anybody's considering an Urge Down-O-Matic then I Urge you to get one (pun intended). The Endur-O-Matic is pretty slick too.

I'll grab a pic of it tomorrow in it's natural habitat, the DH course, with the obligatory full face on the bars. :D

It was brilliant at the DH course. I had some much more control and quicker, more precise handling with the wider bars and short stem. I loved it. After being told I was looking pretty quick by a DH racer I think I might have to enter a DH race then. Apparently my riding style is 'Foot Out, Flat Out'. I really have become a convert to sticknig your inside foot out on a fast, loose/slippy corner as it makes you less worried about losing the bike in the corner as you know you won't fall flat on your face.

Here's a pic from earlier before the rain came and it got really slippy.

I'm loving having a proper full face and the elbow pads aswell as the knee pads as again it let me push harder knowing I won't get hurt/as badly hurt when come I off. If anybody needs elbow pads then I can recommend POC Bones, although expensive they off really good protection and lots of flexibility. I forgot about them when riding and the same thing with the full face and kneepads.
