It is pretty good but postage is £6 no matter how much stuff you get. XT cassettes are also £10 less than over here. But I've worked out that the deore crankset is cheaper than buying a new middle ring and I also get a new BB as the Truvativ one will break. I get better cranks as well.

i take it you dont like truvativ?

I don't mind it but nobody's got a year out of it and mine's at 5 months. I've just had the cranks come loose again too.

brand new SLX crankset for £50, cherching. So I'm doing a bit of upgrading while i'm at replacing it. It won't go on for a while because I'm running the current kit into the ground. So XT cassette and KMC X9 93 chain. Both good bits of kit judging from everyone elses views of it. Unless something better comes up I'll have a X7 mech for £23 but I was looking for X9 really.

Check ebay. I think I paid £26 for my X9 mech, but I've seen them go much cheaper.

Have you managed to get the old BB off? I'm sure the Incredible Hulk installed mine because it won't budge. Damaged my workbench, bent the splines on the tool, and flattened the edge of my spanner trying to shift it.

I haven't got the new crankset yet , I'm collecting it tomorrow and I'll only install it when the current stuff really is dead. Thanks for the heads up though

If it's a 2piece crank (axle is welded to the drive side crank), you'll need it facing probably, so I'd get your LBS to sort it out (PlusGas + decent tools should do the trick). I'm gonna wait until my wears out too, I was just itching to put my new cranks on :P

Probably just lucky. My mate's BB makes a knocking noise once per revolution and he's had it barely 9 months and not ridden it particularly hard. Mine goes through phases of being scratchy and horrible, and then it's fine for a while. I have ridden it through some ridiculously deep puddles because I'm an ejit, so I don't think that helps :P

i think mine needs changing now anyway. starting to click under heavy pressure and i want to fit an slx crankset anyway :p

Asked the Halfords guy who is dealing with my Fury if he gets many warranty returns for the Powerspline BBs and he said no. Maybe I was unlucky.

I still think I'll be looking to switch to an external BB like goyb is planning.

Wonder if the Carrera frame will need facing with it being a modern frame? Worth doing I suppose. Just means getting it fitted by an LBS instead of in my back garden

it will need facing. pretty much every frame needs facing, especially if it came with an internal BB as standard as there would be no need to face it.

a bike shop usually charges about 10-15 quid to chase a face a frame, so you could take it in to them, get it done, take it home and fit it yourself?

    Sweet looking bike mate :)
I'm sure this has been asked somewhere along the 15 pages of text, BUT I cannot be bothered to look...
How are you finding the superstar pedals, (i'm assuming they're nanos), also are your's anodised or painted (I wish to get the red ones), because I have heard stories of the paint rubbing off at the slightest hint of rubbing against any surface.
(this is a question btw :D)

The nanos are awesome pedals to be quite plain. The colour is anodised, it wears off eventually but any colour would. I have put quite a lot of miles on it in a very short amount of time though. 2000km in 5 months

I'm waiting for the rest of the drivetrain and then it's all going on together. I need a new cassette and chain and then the SLX chainset is going on. oh, and a inner ring for the chainset,

I'll do an update on what's happening atm then. I've got the Formulas ordered, the Juicy 3s are at the SRAM techcentre being looked at and hopefully replaced for new. If they are replaced for new ones then I'll flog them along with the rotors and my spare pads.

Drivetrain: The SLX chainset isn't going on yet as I'm putting the whole new drivetrain on together. I've got a new 2011 X7 mech on order, again from CRC for only £20 and also some Gore Ride On Sealed Cables, probably in white.

Advice on the cables needed, black or white, that is the question?

I need a inner ring for the chainset and also a new cassette and chain. The brakes, cables and rear mech will all go on straight away but I'll put on the cassette, chainset and chain together.

id go white, or some bright ridiculous colour if thats an option. Are the X5 shifters interchangable with X7, X9 9 speed derailuers? Also what problems were you having with the juicys? Just got a Nobby Nic on the front of mine, gave me much more confidence, probs didnt help i was running the speed kings at max pressure  Just hoping onone get some more Racing Ralphs in for the back.

I've gone for white cables, I only had the choice of white or black. The whole 'X range' is interchangeable. I hed brake fluid leaking form the reservoir top cap with my Juicys, as well as sticky pistons and a host of other problems.

I'm sending the Gore Ride On Cables in white back as soon as they arrvibe and i've ordered some Jagwire Ripcords in blue.

nice, you changing brake and gear cables?. i need a shorter stem for mine, feeling a liitle stretched out. Looking at the blue superstar AM ones, anyone know the length of the stock stem, orwhere to measure from. 20" frame btw.

Gear cables defo need changing I might do brake hoses if I can be bothered and the money isn't required somewhere else. I'll do an update in a bit with original spec and what it will be soon.

You measure from the middle of the topcap bolt, to the middle of where the bars go. I think.

He should of just bought an 18" frame instead, it won't make a difference with shorter stem, due to the height of the frame from the back, you still have to bend far to reach the handle, if the bike is bigger than your average size, for example, if you need an 18" and you get a 20" and then that increases the size all over by 2inches, then shortening the stem won't make any difference, the frame needs shortening but you can't do it because of it's size, that's what I worked out with the Halfords bike fitter anyway who was building my bike.

It will still bring the bars closer, as well as speeding up the steering, and shifting his weight back a bit, making descending easier.

The 20" measures the seat tube, so obviously the top tube will be longer too, but odds are the stock stem will also be longer, so a 40-60mm stem may well bring him back 20-40mm, or 1"-2", which will still be longer than an 18" with the same stem, but will make a big difference to the feel of the bike.
