Got to the canteen and selected the fine cuisine on offer, moved along to the till to pay for it and handed over a £5 note and got £6 change, he even paused as he handed me my £5 note back.

    I love full length Guards...

I have used crud -racers, and race blade XL on previous bikes, but OMG what a difference having rigid, full length mudguards make.

Thanks redvee as well for the suggestion on the tortecs.

Found out that the coffee from downstairs can be extra strong if you ask.

3 sizes of drinks: small, medium, large (in Italian)
3 amounts of espresso going in: 2,3, or 4 shots depending on drink size

The coffee machine thingy pours even amounts of shots, so if you have a medium 1 shot gets thrown away... unless you ask.

    Much nicer drink.... :D 8)

The gloves I lost in work on Thursday were found and a notice stuck up in the bike sheds which I took down and reclaimed my gloves this afternoon.

    Chili Chutney Biltong. OMG.

Did it come with a flying car and a Dick Van Dyke dance routine?

Forgot to mention my own anti-rant from last week: back light decided to make a leap for freedom on the Farringdon Road contraflow. Thankfully the chap behind alerted me, but I didn't Havel time to stop as I had to get to a meeting. Luckily I needed to walk back down FR to get to the station, and there was the light, still in one piece by the gutter. \o/

Just read an article about someone cycling on the M1. When this comment made me chuckle:
“with traffic passing at speed just yards away”

so a lot safer than most roads then
  • A nice chap in a car driving down Priory Lane this morning pulled along side me and wound down the passenger window, I was waiting for the shout to tell me to get on the cycle path but instead he told me my rucksack rain cover was hanging off.

Bike cleared from GPO and in back of a car getting dropped to work later and US$ 1 in duties in stead of US$ 600....fantastic

Cycleways are signed in blue, so are Motorway signs, the hard shoulder is marked like a cycle lane and I bet there isn't a more direct alternative Cycleway.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Interestingly, the first turbines I remember seeing (at Chelker near Skipton - appeared when I was occasionally heading that way for pot holing trips in the Dales in the early 90s) have become the first to be dismantled. The turbines were worn out and an application for replacements (predictably almost twice the height - 80m rather than 45m) are are being taken down permanently.

The turbines were apparently obsolete with parts hard to obtain - it's a long time since all of them were working. They had barely lasted 20 years. An 'environmental' product with short term planned obsolescence. Food for thought.

Noticed the huge amount of cement stopping the windmill blowing away when I took the first pic. At least I get an idea of wether I've got an head or tailwind on the ride home.

Not sure it would be 'planned' obsolescence; early models of most things become superseded fairly quickly as designs are refined and improved, but someone still needs to start the whole thing off or there wouldn't be any improvement. As for 20 years, a coal fired power station would typically have a 30 year life expectancy when built, and would be a much bigger operation to clean up/replace. Most of a wind turbine can just be melted down as scrap.

Also, funny how everyone loves this

I've been to Kinderdjik - you can hardly see those Windmills until you are within half a mile of them. And, unless you are living in one of them, nobody else gets to have to listen to them 24//7.

Incidentally, those mills are there to pump excess water out of the polders and they are still operational; they can be used in an emergency. Not much obsolescence in bits of timber! Of course, you may be correct about the premature obsolescence of early models as opposed to late ones but it could work both ways. And there is a huge environmental hit in just putting these things up so I reckon Chelkers short lifespan needs to be taken into account.

As for coal fired power stations - those near me all seem to be over 40 years old with no signs of stopping yet. They are doing better than planned rather than worse than planned with the turbines. And remediating the same number of turbines that are needed to match the output of, say, Eggborough would by no means be a simple operation. Of course, it is more complicated than that; probably it is best to stick to either sweeping generalisation or precise facts and figures! It's always messy in the middle.....

Well, the power station itself might still be there, but I bet the turbines and other bits of kit inside have been replaced more than once in 40 years; ditto the wooden workings of the Dutch wind pumps - the same as any machine.

I quite like the look of wind farms, but then I grew up very close to one of the main overhead power line routes - even more utilitarian in design - so maybe it's just what you are used to. I certainly don't think wind turbines are a panacea - the small domestic ones really are pointless unless you have no other option, but

BTW, If the new Hinckley Point nuclear power station contract is anything to go by, the current hoohaa over price rises and where to get power from is going to become a *much* bigger issue.
