In the space of two days both my wife and her mother have said to me "you deserve a new bike".

I'm thinking it's down to six weeks of solo childcare the last of which has involved a non-sleeping two year old with chicken pox. Plus she probably knows about the Equilibrium frame hidden in the garage and is just giving me a bit of leeway...

....and me fighting off South West Water who wanted to charge us a 4 figure sum to fix a pipe that obviously isn't ours.

I was soundly beaten in a round of SCR yesterday, by the guy who I saw struggling on a BSO about 2 years ago. Turns out he's got a decent bike, lost a bit of weight, and just kept going while I've slacked off (i.e. been driving round the country instead).

    Chapeau that man. Deserved.

Found this on Ebay - I love it! 1932 Raleigh Lightweight. Even has front wheel radially spoked!

Very nice. I particularly like the curved stem. Of course you'll need some vintage kit to ride in, and will spend a ridiculous amount of time tracking down spares, but I doubt that'll be a chore.

Sadly, I am restricting myself to just looking at the pictures - but that alone is cheering me up! Deserves to go for decent money.

A loathsome commute by car was brightened up by multiple signs warning of road closures along Liverpool waterfront on 7 September, due to a "Cycle Event". Can't wait!

Rode part of the ToB route in Bristol last night and a road sign advising a 30 minute road closure for the section of road that took me 10 minutes to ride. If I can do it in 10 mins, why are the pros taking 30mins?

It's Cycle to Work day on Thursday and the facilities team sent round a list of 'buddies' who were willing to meet up with novice cyclists and escort them in.

They also included this image on the email:

First day cycle commuting to my new work tomorrow.
That and the fact new work facilities are better than old work facilities - free showers, proper tea rooms, much better view from my seat and it's generally in a much nicer state..
Oh, also my new route will only have about a kilometre of on road cycling

I told my wife that we have enough stuff* so I don't want things for my birthday, I want experiences and things to remember, so for my birthday a few weeks ago my wife got me a day of doing the things that so many Londoners talk about doing "one day".
On my birthday we walked over the Millennium Dome, took the cablecar across the Thames, drank champagne on the viewing platform in the Shard, had dinner in a restaurant in a tower named after a company which makes stock cubes and had a ride on the London Eye. I also have a "How to taste Whisky" course to look forward to. On the down side, she did buy me some things, a badger hair shaving brush, some nice shaving cream, a strop, a leather shaving kit bag and to top it off, a very very nice Dovo open straight razor.

Its her birthday soon, so her experience will be a day driving around Silverstone in different cars, which she is very much looking forward to.

    *not including bike stuff, obviously.

We've decided that (for now) we're going to do that for our nieces and nephews - they get a small item or two to go with it, but the main present is a day out with us (poor things!) ... but to make it interesting/fun we give them a choice with cryptic clues as to what the options are... one of them was "Wheels in the Capital" ... which was a day with the bike in London for the Freeride during Ride London 86 with a trip around the eye and dinner on the way back (in and out on the train to add to the fun) ...

Took the Mini I bought for what I expected to be an over optimistic MOT attempt and it passed. Had a proper look underneath and it's remarkably sound.
    Back on the bike tomorrow.

I'm off work for a week and a half in 2 hours' time. Going to Scotland with my best mate and a couple of bikes.

Knoydart, Arran, Loch Lomond, (and every whisky bar & seafood restaurant on the way) here we come.

It would appear I've returned a memory card to a 'South American based e-tailer' and had a full refund of £32.50, this is news to me as the memory card is still in the camera.

Made it to the top of this hill on the way back from the ToB in Bath today, in the top 10 on the climb on Strava at my first attempt too.

Lap round RiP on the new wheels- roads were closed as its the Duathlon but they are letting cyclists on to do clockwise laps. Made it a bit more interesting as I usually go ACW. Only did one as I am bang out of shape and my back is still suffering but the new Paolo built wheels are superb and the Hope hubs are great and sound like a hoard of angry hornets when freewheeling- people know you are coming! A rather nice little pootle really!

Gear shift started to go a bit soggy in the last 6 or 7 miles; quick look under the hood and sure enough it's starting to fray.

Nice to catch these things early!

  • Just to balance the idiot rolling a ciggie this morning:

Approaching East Leake in the NSL bit, there's a slight rise where I can hear a car approaching behind. I give it a quick look and can see the driver slowing to wait; I give it full beans up the little rise so he can see to pass as soon as possible. As I get to the top I can see oncoming traffic, so I give the wait signal (open palm towards the guy behind, just below waist height); traffic goes past and the guy accelerates past, giving the thank you flash of the hazards as he goes...

Oh, and not long before that, a refuse lorry was stopped on the country road, right on a rise. I saw a beemer pulling up behind him and feared the worst. No such worry, he'd seen me and was waiting for me to clear. A mutual thank you wave and all was good.

A BMW and a Range Rover driver... being nice. In one single bike ride. I might do the lottery...
