Really nice now CWNT, especially without that chainstay protector
Also, got to say that I & Mrs DMC really like the brown saddle, it goes with the build just right, especially the frame, but all in all its a lovely looking bike, & for the record the mud guards look absolutely fine
Well done.
Slighty OT, I think you mentioned that there are 2 types of crud guard for a MTB? Whats the differences? ThanksOrange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

those white guards change the whole package yet again. :shock:0
-
i just cant stop looking at it, its soo lovely..... those mudguards really set it off nise.... and to those saying the "black thing" looks crap, well your right... but it dosnt look as crap as CWNT's face would look if he went night riding without it.I like bikes and stuff0
-
Zaskar20 - The Mudguards stay, and the black thing on the top tube is the batterypack for the lights so I kind of need it for night riding (comes off during the day though).
DMC - I do like the brown saddle, but it is a slightly different shade of brown to the frame, and it's something that would start to annoy me after a while.
I dont remember saying there are 2 different types of mudguard, but in what sense do you mean? Technically, there are LOADS of different styles of mudguard. I did have a MuckyNutz bender fender on before, but it wont fit the pikes.
Well, I've just got back from my very fist ride on this bike and indeed, my very first ride in about 4 weeks since I cracked a rib by falling on the bars, it still hurts a bit but I couldnt wait any longer.
What can I say? I am BLOWN AWAY by how good it is!!!
Seriously, I have such a massive smile on my face right now
When wound down to 100mm and locked out it climbs very VERY well. Although those wide bars do tend to make the steering quite sensitive.
Once unlocked and wound out to 140mm headed downhill, it is just phenominal though. I was a little unsure about keeping the standard spring in there (according to RS, I should be on extra firm) but I'm glad I left it now. I deliberately picked a very rocky descent with a couple of drops and little jumps to test the pikes out. They stayed very plush but never bottomed out. This is also where those massive bars come into their own. The whole bike feels so responsive and chuckable.
The pickup on the DT EX1750s is lightning quick, they are nice and stiff too.
One other thing I noticed was the weight. I went to do a little hop over some dead wood and almost took off. I know that 30lbs is not exactly light, but it's a good 5 or 6lbs lighter than it was before and most of that weight has gone from the wheels and forks (where it matters most).
I'm babbling now, so I'll sum it up. The kit I chose has come together and made the bike EXACTLY how I wanted it, but better! 8)

Yeah but if you think your buzzing now, just imaging what you would be like if you went night riding without any lights! The ultimate adrenaline rush.0 -
Cool beans baby! Don't think the final ride result was ever in doubt with that lot. :P
And i totally agree with you about dropping down to 30lbs - even coming from 32 - 33 down to 30 made a huge difference to me. Glad you're chuffed.0 -
Hi CWNT,
I swear I saw you post about the crud guards and mentioned a normal on one end and something else on the other? I must be going mad!
Anyways, is this the set that you have, bar the colour? Click here
Also, where did you find the rider weight / spring type required information as all I can find is for 2007 and it doesn't include the pikes?

Yup, Them's the ones I have right enough.
Maybe you saw me posting about having a raceguard on the rear, and a Bender Fender on the front. Which is what I did have before, when I was running the marz 66s, but sadly it wont attach to the Pike.
Here are some links to pics of the bender fender fitted to the old forks, it works reall well at stopping overspray (even though it looks like it shouldnt). And it's a bargain at about £6 (although if I cant get it to fit my pikes with some fettling, I'll post you mine for free.

As for spring weights, it was the '07 PDF I used, as well as reviews from other users. PDF was here.
Pike and Rev is on page 2.
It was SuperSonic who said to give them a proper try out first. Glad I did. I can see how people 16st+ doing 4ft+ drops or Dirt Jumping might want to go up to a firm, but Extra firm must be like riding on rigids :shock:0 -
Fantastic mate, thanks. The PDF I found didnt have the extra page to it, so thats what confused me (admittedly it doesnt always take alot)
I'm actually still considering the Pikes for my P7, currently I'm 18.5st without extra kit so I'm not sure whether to change the spring to the Firm or X-Firm? I take it you are a twiglet in weight compared to me, so the standard spring may be too soft?
Regarding the mud guards, thanks for the confirmation, it looks like I'll be getting them (colour co-ordination, read: tart)

Forgot to mention, do you think the black pikes would look nice on my P7 build? I know Orange spec the P7 Pro with black Fox forks but still undecided on the white fork / black fork thing?Orange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

I reckon the black pikes would go nicely with your build actually, consider as well that unlike me, you've got a fair bit of black in the build already, with the seatpost, grips etc. And the guy who made my custom Pike stickers says he can do them in any colour you like (think RED).
I'm no Twiglet, about 16.5st without gear, but I do think that I'm very much borderline with that medium spring and it's yet to bed in.
If you're worried, you could always go for the Air sprung pikes although they will lack the plushness of the coils (which is what I wanted them for). Then again, they'll also be a fair bit lighter.0 -
Yeah, I like the feel of the coils, my wife has the coil RS Tora 318s on her bike and they feel nice and plush, though they dive too much under my weight, hence the change of spring.
Its really a toss up between the coil 454 Pikes or the air BlackBox Revelation Teams Dual Airs, the latter of which are getting great reviews? against the much loved, tried & tested plush Pikes? I really hate decisions at times, lol
You must of read my mind, I was deffo considering the red decals? You got his ebay link? Also how do the decals size up and look against the original stickers?Orange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

Yeh, thats the one thing about my pikes, they do dive really badly under heavy braking (like a good 60mm or so of dive, although that is on flat, grabbing a handful of brake enough to lift the back wheel off the ground).
The Pike stickers are good, seem to be of good quality, easy to apply, and you get 2 sets in case you are an ape and fudge it 1st time round. They come up a little smaller than the originals, and seem to be a slightly different style (perhaps '09?) but I'm not too bothered about that tbh. I would have had them done by silk, but I got sick of waiting for a reply.
Here is the link for the guy I used on ebay click me.
Item description says London, but mine came from Portugal. If you drop him an email, he'll make them up in any colour you want.0 -
oooo, red outlined or full red decals?????

Took her out for her first proper beasting today!
Fantastic weather for it too!
I did bottom the Pikes out a couple of times (when getting airbourne and nobbing about) so I think I may well be swapping to a firm spring in the near future
Some pics from todays ride:

Noooooooooooooooooooo, mud alert, mud alert!
You jammy sausage, its been dark skies and raining here, glad you had a blast.
So if you need the firm spring, then I'd surely need the X-Firm spring? I wonder how much difference you get from each spring up, a little or alot??? If its only a little then even the X-Firm may not be enough for me? (sound of rusty cogs grating in the brain)Orange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

Well, I wasnt bottoming out very hard, and I did have my 16.5st plus about 7lbs of kit.
I'm hoping to order the firm spring sooner rather than later, so when it arrives I'll be able to let you know how much of a difference it makes. Should be in the next week, maybe 2.
A little video of a couple of descents on todays ride. I need to get the camera mounted back up on my helmet as it's a bit iffy on the bars.

Cool, I'd be very interested to know how much difference the next spring up makes as this may help with my decision on the forksOrange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

Did you feel that the X-Firm was more than ok or was it close to being too soft for you? Just trying to gauge if I need the X-Firm or Firm?
