  • Lovely lovely lovely!

Have you got a full weight for the build yet!

Also on a random side note, where did you manage to score that hope poster?

weighs bang on 22lbs with pedals, not bad for a bike with all mountain wheels, dh brakes and 5inch forks. could get it under 20lbs if i sacrifice perfomance. 1lb could be saved from the forks and easily over a pound from the wheels. going to put my ti eggbeaters back on which will save 1/4pound and take it under 22lbs
as for the hope posters i found them haha ha

  • Very nice, cracking job as always.

But how the fark do you get away with a small frame? I'm sure you were nearly as tall as me when we met. Have you cut your legs off at the knees or something :?

nowhere near as tall as you, im only 5ft9 and i have short legs too so i can ride a smaller frame. maybe my big red helmet exaggerated my stature. you must be closer to 6ft

good news, iv,e managed to get hold of a pair of brand spanking new american classic 32h black disc hubs 15mm front for utterly silly money so im going to build some lightweights after all . hubs weigh 345grams for the pair so a set of revolution spokes and nips will weigh another 300ish and 2 rims approx 800ish total projected wheel weight 1445grams. if i buy the spokes and the ritchey wcs rims from crc the and build the wheels myself the whole wheel build will cost me £126 which is amazing for brand new am/classic disc hub, ritchey wcs rims and dt revolution spokes. could go sub 1400 with some stans rims so im gonna go away and have a think.

Ah yes, I was particularly impressed with the size of your Helmet.

Aaaaaanyway. The wheels. Go for it, you know you want to.

ive got the rims and the hubs just got to measure up for the spokes then build them. if i run them tubeless with stans rim strips and the nobby nic 2.1 tubeless ready i can take a full pound off so im nearing the 20lbs mark. gonna order a 5hitload of ti nitrided gold titanium bolts for brake calipers, rotor bolts and various other bolts all over the frame. probably get ceramic bearings for the hubs and the kcnc radiant headset as well as it comes in a lovely gold colour and knocks half the weight off my headset. just when i think its finished off i go again, btw hurry up and restore the orange

just got my new rims this morning and was presently surprised, bought a pair of the ritchey wcs xc 32h disc rims from crc £15 each. lovely looking rims and eyeletted too, got them on the scales and they weigh 390grams each so my wheels are going to be lighter
rims 780gr ritchey wcs girder xc disc 32h £30 crc
    f/hub 116gr american classic 32h 15mm thru £15 ebay brand new
r/hub 225gr american classic 32h qr £40 ebay brand new
spokes 274gr dt swiss rev 2.0-1.5 £46 crc
nipples 23gr dt swiss alloy £0 already have
    total wheel cost
    total wheel £131
    weight 1418gr
going to build them myself so £131 for a near 1400gr xc disc wheel set has to be a bargain.
what started out as having a spare hub floating around turned into a project to build a nice light pair of wheels for as little as possible. i may use dt brass nipples which will add 40ish grams but i will feel more confident on the wheels and they will still be very light and serviceable. just waiting on the spokes which could turn up today. if not they will be here tomorrow so i can get them built and ridden for sunday

heres the bit i have still waiting on spokes though. decided to use silver dt swiss revolutions with black brass pro lock nipples for the build, had some disasters with alloy nips over the years

    just some quick sums
    current wheels
f/r wheel 1640 grams after changing rear wheel nipples to brass ones
tyres 1150 grams for the pair
    sealant 100 grams the pair
    valves and tape 30grams
    total 2920grams or 6.44lbs
    new wheels
    f/r wheel 1455 grams est
    tyres 940 grams pair
    sealant 100 for the pair
stans rim tapes 110 grams for the pair
    rimtape 20grams
    total 2625grams or 5.78lbs
weight saved 295grams or 2/3rds of a pound
new bike weight should be 21lbs dead or there abouts
not a huge saving but the wheels are already pretty light. going to save 50grams on a new head set 20g on a new ti/carbon rear skewer, 70g on new grips as i may replace the fitted lock ons with esi silicon grips. with a few bolt changes i reckon 20.5lbs is a realistic and safe weight for this bike without resorting to measures that will affect the ride. as it stands its very rideable has tough forks and exceptional brakes the only possible weakspot will be my wheel building skills. i could stick some superlight xc forks on to take it under 20lbs but after my experiences with pace rc39,s i wont bother. neither will i bother with carbon railed saddles ever again after one exploded under my ass, im very happy with the spoon. i will make the small changes as noted above then i will officially declare my ego well and truly finished ?????????

Is that actually a real weight then, or calculated? Sounds suspiciously light for what's on there!

Bargain on those hubs, although the old ones had some big reliability problems, keep an eye on your disc tabs and freehub body.

ive weighed it on digi scales, also added the weight of every component added them together and got the same number i could list the entire list but im sure you already know the weights. ive got some very light bits on there.
    seatpost 174grams
    stem 104grams
    pedals 220grams
the frame itself weighs 3.3lbs and the forks weigh 3.96lbs inc remote and axle. the charge saddle weighs in at 245grams, i have much lighter saddles but am sticking with the spoon as it feels awesome
21.7lbs is light but not superlight. this bike is still functional and can be ridden hard
as for the hubs the front is the new design minus the graphics the rear is older but i ran an older one for 3 years with no bother. could save a chunk of weight ditching the 09 formulas for a set of r1,s and kcnc razor rotors but as i hover around the 17/18 stone mark i need to stop and the formula the ones do that better than nearly every other brake especially at their weight. going to keep the traversees for trail centres and use the ritcheys on more xc type rides.

Fair enough, I guess 21.7s about right, it was talk of getting near 20lbs that seemed less likely. My hardtail was 19.7 but every single part was lighter!

As long as you like it it's fairly irrelevant!

Have you thought about losing some weight yourself... Most cost effective than Ti bolts :-)

i actually trained to be this weight as i body build aswell as cycling. not easy to balance the 2 but i manage somehow. my bike weighs 21.7 before i swap the wheels, tyres, grips and so on. 300 grams save on wheels tyres, could save 115 on a saddle swap, 70 on the grips and another 100 or so with other bits i mention. thats a total of 485ish grams or 1.1lbs taking it down to 20.6lbs. swap the brakes to formula r1,s with some 96g kcnc 180mm rotors and its touching 20lbs almost

  • Nice build, comes in at a sensibel weight for what it is.

You really don't want a hardtail with 150mm fork on it, doesn;t feel right and is so wrong :P

Be interested to see what you reckon of the enigma welds?

i have a titus ti frame and all i will say is that the titus welders have a much higher skill level than the enigma welders
as for the big fork on a hardtail, i had a ragley mmmbop with 160mm lyriks and i loved the ride. it was really a bike that could do anything although it was quite weighty so im going to build a similar bike but much much lighter. i have as much fun building them as i do riding them so if its a bit rubbish it doesnt matter

That's possibly the most retarded thing I've ever heard anyone say.
  • More like that mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmboppppppitybop was the most retarded thing I had seen for well ever.

If your gonna go big forked, get a full sus frame to match.

Hardtails work best in this country for 130mm tops.
But 120mm is the sweet spot.
  • The price of my hardtail in the classifieds is the most retarded thing I had seen for well ever.

    I totally agree!
  • OOOOOOOOOO, the green eyed monster hits again, just this time on bikeradar.

Well I'm not surpised at this tbh as you lot seem to ride GT'S and the usual distinctive crap.

Still, I guess it's a step up from Apollo so am pleased for you.
  • WTF is he on about? ^
  • ha!

    Your a wiseguy.
  • and you're a gimp but this is hardly the time or the place to air such things.

Jog on now, back under your bridge, and take your overpriced, very mediocre bike with you.

    Toodles!
