i would go for some type of elbow protection, cause if your going to come off you nearly always go flying forward. they aren't overly necessary though i ride it both with and without, sometimes just a couple of layers of clothes is enough

here is some info to help you decide if you want elbow pads or not
the first half of the day you could leave them behind cause we will be doing the natural stuff and the ground will be mostly soil and will give a soft landing, but there will be opportunity to push your speed on some descents. don't worry if you don't want to do the descents fast cause you will be able to do these at whatever speed you want and still enjoy them
the second half the day will be on ftd and the monkey, the trail surface is a lot harder and pebblier with some rockgardens. the chances are that if you fall off here you will be hitting a hard gritty surface and some sections just want you to go fast on them, especially a series of berms on the new end to ftd

if enough people want to we can stop at the cars half way through without going much out of our way at all. this would be just before our stop at one of the cafes, so you could leave your food behind and top up on water if you so wished as well
if you have elbow pads bring them it never huts to have extra protection

Hi keven...nice vids there of cannock.....see tammy had to beat the bike down the weirwolf !!! ...good fun you both had,, i looked at the pie run - glentress whilst watching the others, i take it thats a red run.....it was more techy in places than cannock with lots of roots, skinnies and boardwalks, the scottish reds seem to be more like our black runs in places.

Evening all, hope you are all well, can anyone recommend a cheap bike computer? Mainly to record mileage, have been poorly over the last two weeks and need to get some miles in before the 15th!

Ha, probably, had a bad throat infection for a week but didn't finish my anti biotics course and got it back 4 days later, gutted! I've heard on the grapevine you don't need your granny ring anymore, looks like I'm gonna be last in May and June!! :(

I still need the old granny ring at times, I can't churn out the big gears for long, so no need to worry about being last, my place as the tail gun Charlie is not up for grabs yet :D

you will want your granny ring at cannock, even if you can climb without it, it does make it easier on some of the tight switchbacks just to get around them

there is a bloke who has just started riding with us and he doesnt have a granny but after a few goes of the monkey, he has put it back on purley to get around the swithcbacks

June hasn't been confirmed yet, should be sorted by the end of this week tho.

I think I have a wireless cycling computer still in it's box in the garage. If you want I'll try to remember to bring it to cannock for you to have a look at and if you want it just give us £10 for it if that's acceptable.

    Budget pads? Try these..... http://www.stif.co.uk/gear/select_optio ... &store=mtb

Caz, Steve, thanks for the info, will make sure I invest in the knee pads before the 15th wouldn't want to bleed on your leather seats Steve. Am gonna try doing the blue run twice at Llandegla next week to try and tackle that hill twice. Hopefully that'll help for Cannock.

Cheers Cheshley. yea if you don't mind I'd be interested in the computer, just hope you don't blow the proceeds on oatcakes! Those pads are the business, proper Darth Vader, I like the shin pads kept crackin my shins with my pedals at Llandegla, could be worth an investment, are they ok to ride in?

I find the Titans to be very comfy mate. First time out it felt a bit wierd having something strapped to my legs but within a mile I'd forgotten they were there.
