Thread Title Change
Linacre Classic Route, Linacre Reservoirs, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
Saturday 30th April 2011
This is a 16 mile route which when ridden in a clockwise direction promises (according to the guide book) "short sharp climbs and long, satisfying singletrack descents".
If anyone wants the map sending out, PM me your email address.
Usual arrangements, 9.30am meet for a 10am start. Your meeting point is here..... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=S42+7JW ... 9&t=h&z=18
The Derbyshire Council website says there are toilet facilities but doesn't say anything about food so bring your own Scooby snacks.
Any questions?

Cheers for that Rich,
Looking forward to getting together with the group, it seems ages since we last managed a ride with you guys0 -
There isn't any food places apart from the ice cream van but that might just be a summer thing. There are some great descents around there, particularly the one that descends to Barlow. Enjoy.Eddy Merckx EMX-3

Post on the FaceBook event page for the Linacre ride:
Car Parking,
Guys, when I was over there, there were two car parks, an upper one and a lower one I suggest we all meet up at the lower car park, no particulair reason really but just to make sure we don't get split up at the start.1998 Marin Hawk Hill

A big hello to all the new faces who joined us yesterday. I hope the pace didn't put you off coming on more Slow Rides.

As an old fat bloke who's only just started riding off road I'd like to join you on this if my shifts allow.
I did a bit of walking around the Hayfield area on Thursday and there are some good looking decents (some lung busting looking climbs too!).0 -
Yes, it was good riding on Saturday.
Re Hayfield, I've got the Nick Craig route mapped that was in May 2010 MBR. It's 30km in length so comparable to Saturday's ride but with another 400m of total ascent. It's a kind of 4 leaf cloverleaf route with each leaf going out and back from Hayfield so you can easily cut one leaf out towards the end if you want. Looks a good route though.Eddy Merckx EMX-3

Just went around this area myself for 1st time today. Similar sort of route (Evans Peak District Short ride it route 2010), all I can say is lot n lots of hills, did 3500 feet total climbing over 18 miles. I was ready for home half way up the 2nd hill!!!!! Took me around 5 and a quarter hours so expect to be out a while.
But the downhills are worth the struggle and lots of walking uphill. I found it quite technical in places and very very rocky and loose. After 2 such downhills me and my riding partner could just smell cooking brakes pads.
Also watch out for horsies, Ive never seen as many horses in one area, think I saw more than sheep n cows.
The dirt/soil seems very sandy on the bridal paths which in conjunction with loose rocks can make it treachorous in places especially in the down hill sections, lots and lots of back brake or the front wheel might go under you if you lock up on the sandy surface.
A lot of the bridal paths seem to be used by Landrovers or Tractors as there are areas where you will have pedal strikes as there are areas where there are ruts 8inches to a foot deep caused by landrover/tractor wheels.
As a guy who should be used to hills living in the middle of the Pennines, I found this route hard work although this may be cause im not as fit as i should be.
A shame i didnt take any pictures with my camera to give you some idea of the terrain and hills.
Pretty much the same route, except on the west side of route I went nearer New mills and parked at Rowarth.
Am I glad I've been? yes,
Would I go again? nope those up hills are killers (even walking up with the bike) and took all the enjoyment out of it.0 -
Sounds like great fun and just what we are looking for
I have ridden all of this route in the past so none of it is a surprise to me and all of the 'Slow Riders' I have met so far will not have a problem with any of it.
Those that want to can walk the bits they don't like and are not too comfortable with and the rest will wait patiently and with good humour for the whole group to reassemble.
It is the Peak District after all and you can't have a down without an up :twisted:0 -
puddle-rider wrote:It is the Peak District after all and you can't have a down without an up
Unfortunetely this is true :P all the wishing in the world by myself to have downhills without uphills wont come true, *Rubs his Genie Lamp harder*
I was map reading and when me and my riding buddy to a junction it came to the point he knew which way to go without asking, as it always seemed to be the uphill rather than the downhill lol.
Think it was the hill up to marker 10 on the map that killed me and the downhill down the other side, i gotta say was the best.
I don't want to come across too negative about the route/area, so Im going to end on a couple of positives.
1. Great Scenary while pushing bike
2. Some of the best downhills fun wise and technical wise I have had on a "natural" trail, although I have only recently started doing natural trails as opposed to trail centres, so my experience in this aint vast.
3. Technical wise on par with Reds at Gisburn and Lee Quarry Trail Centres.0 -
Trouble with routes and riding is one mans poison is another mans something or other
It's a bit like films I would never recommend a film or book to some one as they are so personal.
I rode the first 8.5 miles of this months route today and for me it was typical Peak District riding, lots of rocks, some long slogs but great views and downhills.
The road climb up past the landfill site to the New Allotments is a slog but a relatively easy way to gain height fast, one section across the New Allotments had me off and pushing but then you get the nice down hill through Hills Farm to Peep O Day. Then a fantastic downhill into Coldwell Clough with the long slog and push up towards Oaken Clough, only riding gods like Nick Craig can clean that as far as i'm concerned
The bridleway across towards Broad Clough is OK, and then the down hill from here to the Kinder Reservoir is awsomely fast !!!
The climb up from the bottom to the Shooting Cabin is an absolute killer though
But when you get there you have the lovey fast path across Middle Moor with enough technical bits thrown in to keep you on your toes and interested then just one last road climb to gain height for the long blast down to Lantern Pike, short up hill then awesome single track down Lantern Pike and a nice steady amble back to the cars to cool off.0 -
'Think it was the hill up to marker 10 on the map that killed me and the downhill down the other side, i gotta say was the best.'
That's Coldwell Clough, cleaning that is strictly for riding gods and the down hill is on the way to Jacobs Ladder, unless of course you turned left like our route?0 -
Yes I turned left like on your route.
Pity I work weekends, or else wouldn't of minded coming with you guys n gals sometime.0 -
i might join you lot for this one if you dont mind......there are a lot of hills round there that will get most people blowing out of there back side but what go's up must come down and there very good.0

Great ride last weekend - thanks for organising. Good to explore these new areas. As for the beer stop, that just made the ride Cheers !
Unfortunately cannot make Sunday 29th, but will be looking out for the one in June.

The Facebook group page now has our regular monthly rides planned up to the end of August. This forum page seems to be seeing less and less action so although I will continue to post details of the next ride on here, you will see more information on Facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=gr ... 24640&ap=1
Our next planned rides are:
Hayfield this weekend
Penmachno on June 25
A return to Linacre on June 26 for those who missed it last month or anyone who just doesn't fancy driving to Wales that weekend or wants to do both days
A 27 mile Hope Valley route on July 30
Cannock Chase on August 28
I'm also doing the British Heart Foundation Robin Hood ride at Sherwood Pines on October 16 and anyone is welcome to come and potter round the 36 mile course with me.
http://www.bhf.org.uk/get-involved/even ... ps=1001004
and finally, as the world is apparently going to be consumed by a fireball on October 21, there will be a group ride on October 22 because if nothing else, at least the trails will be nice and dry1998 Marin Hawk Hill

Got a "Bit of a Do!" tonight but hopefully all things being well I shall make it tomorrow. I might not be in the greatest of shape though0

I knew I shouldn't have drank all that beer before embarking on such a physically demanding ride
It was my first time out and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, honest, no really I did. I'm a tad tired now though. Nothing a nice hot bath and an early night can't cure
I will be making every effort to join you chaps again, shifts permitting and I'll try not to treat you to grass chewing fall next time0 -
The Rules.....
For the benefit of those who still use this forum to monitor our rides, please find below a copy of the email I have just sent to all members of the Slow Rides Facebook group:
After receiving a few comments and my own observations over the last few rides, I feel the need to send out this short reminder about the whole idea behind the Slow Rides.
For those who have joined the Facebook page through word of mouth and haven't seen the BikeRadar forum where this all started, please read the very first post on the forum thread which I put out in January 2010:
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... 6#15900906
The last few rides have been great as always but there have been increasing occasions where those riding at the front have been pushing the pace along but haven't been stopping for everyone else to catch up. Some riders have been left behind and some have got lost because the ones at the front have the map!!! The whole point of these rides is that the pace is dictated by those at the back, not the frontrunners. Anyone is welcome to join the rides but please remember what the group is called.
I have also been asked by a few members to introduce a new rule to the group. This new rule is the 'No Helmet, No Ride' rule. I know that helmets aren't compulsory in the big wide world but please, I'm sure everyone in the group would prefer to have to call for the air ambulance because a rider has stacked and is injured rather than have to call the police to report a dead body. I know it's grim, but I know which I would prefer.
Lastly, just to reiterate the points made in the original forum post and for no particular reason:
You and your bike are your responsibility, please make sure you are carrying the necessary tools/spares that you would need if you were riding alone. Although my name is on the opening post of the BR forum thread and in the most part I choose the locations/routes for the rides, I am NOT your guide/trailside mechanic/first aider/Mum. Although the usual riding etiquette will always apply within the group, I take no personal responsibility for you or your bike.
I hope that this email has worked, just to let you know that (in theory) if you send an email to slowridesforunfitpeople@groups.facebook.com, the email should find it's way to every member of the group. I am also going to repost this email on the BR forum and create a document in the FB group page. I don't want the group to become bogged down with rules but I do want everyone to remember why the group was created in the first place.
Thanks for listening.
