Hi there, I'm new to the forum (and cycling) but this sounds interesting

    Please excuse my questions!

How many people usually attend these organised rides?
I've never been to the Peak DIstrict but is it far from Birmingham?
I've also never been to Cannock Chase, are the trails OK for newbies?
Are the rides usually on a Saturday or Sunday?
    And finally
Would anyone mind if I tagged along? I'm a big guy trying to lose weight and need some inspiration to get back on the bike.

Sorry in advance for my questions, but if you don't ask then you'll never know :?

Most we have had was 24 I think at Cannock last Summer, least has been 3 at Lee Quarry last 'Summer' and they got exceedingly wet!!!

Google says a couple of hours to Ladybower from central Birmingham so depends where in the city you live I suppose..... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&sourc ... 29&t=h&z=8
If you fancy coming along why not post up and see if anyone wants to car share?

Cannock is great for newbies (I think), plenty of unmarked trails to potter around the fireroads on or Red graded routes for when you have got your confidence (Monkey Trail is more technically challenging than Follow The Dog). The group was there 3 or 4 times last year and a few members are pretty local and so go there lots in between too. I think you would be more than welcome to join them for an explore, talk to Russell or James on the FB page, or wait for an official group ride to be announced and join us all for a day out. We also did a night ride there last year which went down well.

Group rides are mostly Saturday or Sunday. I try to vary it because some people can't make Saturdays and some can't do Sundays. There are also the odd mid-week ride when people have the opportunity. Peeps usually post up on the FB pages when they are going out if they fancy some company.

You are more than welcome to come along on any of the rides. All events get their own page on the Facebook group and I change the thread title here after each ride to announce the next location. Facebook seems to be where most of the group's chatter happens now tho.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask and someone will probably have the answer.

  • Hi all,

Don't really do Facebook out of choice but am really interested in the group as I'm quite unfit and have just returned to MTBK'ing (you lot sound like my ideal bunch!!!). I'm slowly building up, have bought a beginner's bike (GT Avalanche 3.0 Hydro) and am losing weight and gaining confidence but so far I'm only on the roads and am feeling like i should have bought a hybrid!

Being a local lad i noticed that you are doing Ladybower at the end of Jan - is there any more details outside of Facebook? About 15 of us (work colleagues & friends) are doing Derwent Valley on the 13th Feb as part of a build up to doing the Trans Pennine Trail over 2 days in August (in support of Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice).

If you could post more details I'm sure that a few of us would love to join your 'easy' rides out!

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Cheers

Hiya Craig. You're doing the TPT in 2 days? ALL of it? You can't be that unfit mate

Lee Quarry is on 30th Jan, Ladybower is on 26th Feb. Details of all rides appear on here in plenty of time so there's no problem if you're not on Facebook and if you miss something you can always message me directly. The meeting place for Lee Quarry is under investigation at the minute because there are reports of Gypsies being parked on the road where everyone would normally park.

Look forward to you joining us sometime :)

  • Hi Cheshley - thanks for your reply.

Yes, even though quite unfit we are doing all 207 miles of TPT over 2 days. There is lots of practice going on and 'healthy living' to prepare ourselves for the challenge ahead!! To be fair - everyone i speak to about it says that the TPT is fairly flat and the only real challenge is a very sore ar*e (i've already scoped out an extra comfy touring seat...).

26th Feb for Ladybower sounds good to me but may struggle for Lee Quarry - will have a chat with a couple of friends who no doubt will be interested.

As a side note - noticing you are Doncaster based do you do any local trails? I'm from Rotherham and some colleagues/friends live in Doncaster so if you have anything interesting please let me know.

    Cheers!

THere's not much local trails worth riding mate, it's all very flat. We usually mess around in Sandall Beat Woods one night a week with lights and at the weekends do the same or have a ride out to Steetley Quarry for a bit of something different.

Can you send me details if the time and date for the meet. I will try and make it up there with my mate. I'm a qualified first aider and I am pretty good at fixing broken bikes. I hope to hear from you soon. Happy riding :-)

    Thread Title Change

Our first outing of 2011 will be to Lee Quarry with the possibility of a trek over to Cragg Quarry if the link trail has been finished. I've never been so if anyone wants to chip in with information about parking etc please feel free.

Usual plan, meeting 9.30ish for a 10:00am start and hopefully the weather will be better than our last 'group' ride there, when only 2 people braved the rain.

Lee quarry is situated just off the A681 Newchurch Rd. Near Bacup in Lancs. Park in the 'dead end' rd at the back of the futures centre. Postcode OL13 0BB
There are no facilities on site whatsoever, so bring some grub and a drink with you.

    reposting meeting information ^^^

I've never been so if you need any more info post a question and someone will be along who knows what they are talking about :o)

  • I've just messaged my riding mate and awaiting a reply but i wouldn't mind riding Lee Quarry with others if welcome?
What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?
