I'm still working on Richie, but he's not for playing out if there's any deep muddy walking bits.
We had a long muddy push on sunday and it's put him off biking a bit, and if he won't go, I can't go :(
    Caz xx

So to summarise, he wants to go mountain biking but doesn't like mud......?

May I recommend taking up chess....?

    :lol::lol::lol:

He doesn't mind mud, but when you are walking along a path, pushing a bike and the wheels on the bike sink nearly to the hubs and your shoes sink and mud gets inside the shoes, it's not fun .
Had to wash our shoes as they were filthy inside and stunk of sheep shit :(

Any idea on approx distance, meeting times etc for the 4th? might try and see if I can finally come meet and ride with you guys, thats if you dont mind me taking my bike for a walk :)

Meet time is usually 10am for a 1030 start. Not sure about distance for this one as I am not too familier with the routes being mentioned but not usually more than 20 miles or thereabouts.

the rides we have done before in the Peaks have been 20+ miles and have usually seen a finish in the region of 4pm, but it'll be a bit dark by then so I think 15 miles will be plenty, especially considering the terrain and probable wet conditions and look to finish around 2.30 - 3ish then off to the pub for a warming hot beverage :o)

You don't need to go home for a shower, you have a Mobi washer so problem sorted :)

Also, not sure about Cavedale at any time, it's unrideable for me, a very steep rocky stream. Perhaps if you have v good DH skills and body armour plus are willing to risk a spell in hospital then you'd have a go.

I think we're going to give the dark peak a miss until the spring, just get tired of pushing the bike around. We've got a couple of rides from home we can do to keep us going plus there a few shorter white peak rides that aren't too bad in the winter, unless they're under snow of course! Then there's always a spinning class once a week to keep the fitness up.

Stanage edge is ok, done one ride around there. There is a section in the middle that has been ripped up by 4x4's so again for me is unrideable, not too good on the feet as well! There is a short cut to the left before the bad stuff that's supposed to be ok, steep and technical, but we didn't go down there.

Perhaps we'll get to ride with you guys sometime in the spring.

Cavedale will be icy at the moment....but still fun 8) It's generally got water running down it anyway and being Limesttone is very slippy but now it'll be ice-rink slippy :D
Stanage edge has two cracking descents but a LOT of Tarmac if you go around Redmires and up to Stanage Pole. It's one of those rides that's a bit out on it's own so Tarmac is the only option  We usually tie it in with Totley moor and Blacka woods which might be ok at the moment as the ground should be hard with frost instead of a mud-bath 8)

Cavedale.Believe me the photo's don't do it any justice.

That route of yours for Totley Moor and Stanage Edge was on of my initial choices mainly becasue it's pretty much weather proof and not too demanding so will fit in quite nicely with the short days, not too technical and does have a couple of nice descents in Blacka Plantation and Stanage Edge.

The section along Totley moor will have standing water and the section around Bole/Blacka Hill might be boggy but Houndkirk Moor and the BW (both) around Lady Cannings Plantation should be fine,as will the track from Redmires to Stanage Pole and either descent off Stanage edge.
Probably better than Cavedale if you're unsure about(wet/steep) Technical descents?

Our last organised group ride before Xmas will see a return to the trails of Dark Peak.

ermmmm, that's about all we've decided on at the minute. Time, start and route to be confirmed.

For those who can make it, there may be another group ride at new year weekend but I'll have to sort that out and have a think about where to go.

We're gonna keep a watch on the weather for this one. Its a long drive for us for a "walk" in the snow. :)

Well it's just dumped about 3 inches here in North Sheffield and the Trans Pennine passes will probably close again at some point. If it freezes then the Peak trails will be hard going
  • I was thinking myself that the Peak ride might be off :(

Please note that due to the weather, and having looked at the forecast for the S33 area, there is a very good chance that this ride will not go ahead as planned.

Please keep an eye on the FB group and on this forum for updates but as there is already 4-6 inches of snow on the hills and more forecast, be prepared to find something else to do this weekend.

You aint kidding, I rode down it a couple of months ago and it was freaking tough, the rocks are mahoosive and its ridiculously steep at points and sheep everywhere!

Certainly the toughest hill I've ridden down so far, I should think its a death trap this time of year.
  • We'll not be playing out, we aren't risking the drive over the Snake Pass or even the A6..sorry chaps :(

Dont get me wrong its not only the toughest but the most fun I have ever had in a downhill, I love technical downhills, the fast stuff is great but the sense of achievement thinking yeah I got down that without breaking my neck is awesome.

On my first go I managed it down ok only stopping once because the rebound in my forks were too high for the DH and kangarood me a bit hard after going over a big rock and had to footdown to save myself from cracking my face against a huge rock.

    Flat pedals, I love you!

Over 10cm fell over night with another 10-15cn forecast again tonight, add that to already frozen snow and I think it'll be pretty bad out there.

No snow forecast Saturday though
