Jacob's Ladder is quite a way from Edale village Roo and in order to come DOWN it you usually need to get over to Castleton and around the back of Mam Tor, which adds a lot of riding to any loop which goes anywhere near Ladybower.
The classic Jacobs ladder loop starts from Edale village,no need to go near Castleton.
Start from Edale/Barber Booth go up to Hollins cross turn right around the flanks of Mam Tor,up and over Rushup Edge, down Roych Clough into Coldwell Clough then up to the start of the Ladder via Oaken Clough. The route is around 15 miles.

A slow saturday ride in the peaks sounds great. I live in Derby and haven't ridden up there yet so I'm tempted to come along on Saturday. Just to check, how do I know who I'm meeting up with if I was to turn up at the train station?? Some sort of banner? Would hate to see a bunch of peopel with bikes, go up to speak to them only for them to say who the **** are you!? lol

I'm also thinking of coming to the Cannock ride the following week

Cheers. If I can get a pass I'll be there. Just noticed in your sig that you're doing the DPC, I'm signed up for that too. Looking forward to it but as I said I've never ridden the peaks before so should really get some experience...

I've been trying SPD's today, so far so good, still scared though and spending too much time thinking about the pedals and not what I'm riding over :(

 Classic Jacobs route starts in Edale, we usually park at Barber Booth as its free..
last descent of the ride is Jacobs, followed by a quick blast down the farm track and 10 mins of road, not exactly far away... And its rude not to take in one of the finest descents in the Peak!

The bottom of Jacobs Ladder is actually 2.7miles from the car park in Edale village. If you want to do it as a descent the classic loop takes you 13 miles to the top of the Ladder.Quite do-able with some of the Ladybower stuff added on but would be a longish day depending on how quick you are.The climb up to the top of the ladder from the Hayfield side is a very long slog.

Hi everyone, I was looking at this thread and thinking I would like to join you all. Looking at getting there by train and as its the bank holiday, they have rail repairs! Anyone driving up from London that day? I am willing to share petrol and jokes?

Hiya, you're more than welcome to join us but I don't know of anyone coming from London. The closest group members we have are in Reading or Aylesbury but I'm not sure if they're coming.

OK, so the brake pads I ordered from CRC yesterday and paid £6 for next day delivery haven't turned up. Does anyone think brakes are a good idea in the Peak District or are they overrated.....?

    what are brakes for again

ill be there in the morning, arriving in the black vw beetle

i have some spare brake pads for formula r1's if there any use, unsure whether they are compatible with any other models

The brakes are Hayes Stroker Ryde and as far as I've seen they aren't compatible with anything else, not even the Stroker Trail. I'll manage tomorrow and get stocked up with spares next week.

I've stripped the pads out and they look like they'll manage one more time, it's pretty flat over there isn't it....?
