With regards to the pads. The 661 Kyle Strait pads are great. I wear them all the time even on relaxed rides as they are so comfy and don't get in the way I might as well wear them. The 661 evo pads are a similar design but use the special material that is flexible and soft but hardens on impact. But the normal ones are so comfortable I find it hard to justify the extra price for the evo.

If you're looking for full leg coverage including the shin then look at POC or Race face pads, they are highly regarded by many on this forum. Do a search in the buying advice plenty of info in past posts.

It would seem the Kyle Straits are very well thought of. The question is whether or not I need shin pads and whether I should buy separate ones or all in one. Also, is it worth getting elbow pads? I can see things getting expensive but if it's sensible then I guess it has to be done. Robocop suit?

Get some 6ten shoes as well and you feet will never slip off V12's
As for the Kyle Straights they get my vote as well never know your wearing them.

wear as much protection as you feel is necessary. When I first got into the sport I wore elbow pads and knee pads and didn't find they got in the way at all. I would ware them for the whole trial not just on the downs. There are some good comfortable designs these days so day long XC rides with padding is defiantly not that bad any more.

For the elbows I use POC Bone VPD arm pads. They are very light, have lots of ventilation and fine for long rides but do cost a bit more than the rest.

For the shins I used prefer a 2 part system so you can take the shin pads off on easier rides and put them on for hard rides where you think you might come off more. I now use SPD's so its not an issue any more.

Ok, thanks. I think I'll go for the Kyle Straits and look into elbow pads too. I do have SPDs but am not confident using them on technical rides but I think having separate shin and knee pads would be sensible as I can then opt not to wear the shin pads when using the SPDs.

  • Hi Folks, sounds like you all had a great time at the weekend, apart from the nasty looking fall.

I have read through the thread and I'm no expert but you seem quite advanced for a slow group.

I would like to go to Wales but I feel I may fall off and injure myself, maybe I should look to attend a course and get help on my riding and bike setup.

I have looked at this course and it seems good:

Has anyone attended any courses and can comment?

I think I should go on one of those at some stage. All I've had is a bit of very basic advice at the start of a decent so you should be ok giving it a go if you want to. Just stick with me!

If your thinking of tuition I can't praise enough Tony Doyle, he runs a MTB skills company called i think! ukbikeskills, he hangs around on the STW forum under the name of Jedi.

He is a really good guy and gave me some of the best tuition i've ever received and i've been on a few courses.

There is link to him on my facebook page Mike Hickey.

He operates out of Woburn so is pretty local and he charges about £70 for the day.

Mike, I just showed the x-ray to my wife who is an orthopaedic scrub nurse and she asked if you have had it plated. Apparently if not you should insist that it is.
Hi was that directed at me because i must admit it has been bothering me that, 1 the A&E doc really didnt seem to give a shit and 2 I really dont want a lump there that will cause me discomfort when wearing a pack (happened to a mate !)

Yes. I just showed it to her and that's what she said.

I know a friend who broke his collar bone mountain biking and he wasn't given a plate initially and had loads of hassle.

I think she's a bit cautious about giving reasons but worth looking into.

And I'll see if I can find out a bit more.

Regarding the knee/elbow pads again, it would appear the fantastic deals on the 661 Kyles are not around anymore (ie £25-£30) and a lot of places are out of stock. I have found some at a reasonable price but have also found 661 Evos at a very good price (knee and elbow). So, should I go for the Evo knee and elbow pads or the Kyle knee and Evo elbow pads?

    Thanks for the help.

depends on how good the good deal is? If they're not much more than go for the evo. They are of a very similar design just the Kyle uses a hard internal shell but the Evo uses the d30 magic stuff. I've just seen on the 661 website they also do the Evo in a lighter XC version too.

About £10 in it and the Kyles are an ebay shop whereas the Evos aren't and are next day delivered. They don't stock the XC version though but I think I'd prefer the extra protection anyway.

I've ordered them from www.descent-gear.com. I found them at a very similar price on ebay.

They're expensive compared to the £25 -£30 offers on Kyles that have been about but I can could only find those deals on small or XL sizes.

The best deal I could find on ebay was about £37 and about £40 from normal retailers so £10-£11 difference.

If I decide to go, you could get a lift with me from Manchester and leave your car at mine. The only thing is I would probably leave earlyish Friday afternoon and stop over in the B&B at the campsite (if the room is still available). Working for myself gives means I can take the afternoon off.

Cool, i got B&B there on the friday but they had no vacancies for the Saturday night so they offered me a little caravan that they have on site for the Saturday so ive taken that!

Looking forward to it, just cleaned all the peak grit from this morning off the bike and am getting it all tweaked to perfection for next weeks road trip! :D
