Sorry to repeat this again, but what was the consensus of the sizing guide compared to castelli? If I can do an L castelli, should I go for a 32"? Or would the 33" fit better?
I have a pair of Large Free Race Aeros which I bought at peak fitness so wanted something a touch looser and went for a 33. If anything they were tighter (straight from the bag). I'd suggest a 33 if you want compression, 34 if you want comfort.
Disclaimer - This may change if they stretch with use, my Aeros are 3 years old.

I'm a L in Castelli and a 32" jeans waist, 34 in these are very snug race fit, so skip breakfast when you wear them :P

Mine are arriving today, and I have an ironman on Sunday, so completely ignoring conventional wisdom, am planning on changing into them after the swim and having 112 miles in them. And hopefully my arse will feel super for the run.

    * assuming that they're relatively easy to get into even sizing up

Has anybody used both the Sportful Total Comfort pad and Castelli's Progetto X2 pad?

These CPT3 bibs look good but a mate keeps going on about Sportful's Total Comfort bibs which are currently on sale for £78 at PBK in XS only (RRP £130).

I'm leaning towards the CPT3 for extra David Millar ponceyness.

I got a 32 of the Defiant shorts, and they are snug but feel equivalent to the L in the Castelli free aero race. Wore them this morning and all fine but my shape isn't quite perfect for them (but that's the same with the aero race).

    Very comfy.

Aha, so one other person who does match up to the suggested size :D
Guess it's all down to body shape of the individual.

Was hoping to try the new ones tomorrow, as am out at 6am for a 40 miler, but they are only being delivered tomorrow (can't complain) and that's to my work, so won't get my mitts on them until Tuesday.

If I have the packaging, am considering sending a pair (bought 2) of the defiant shorts back - I like them a lot, but they are to my mind for hot summer conditions, and we don't get many of them being realistic. Hoping the new ones will be a slightly thicker fabric.

Tbh I'd rather go with the shorts I've tested on my longest rides rather than a brand new pair. You really don't want to find that these don't suit you 20 miles into the bike.

I always found my tri shorts were comfortable enough though and no time wasted getting changed. It's hard enough getting dressed after the swim especially if you are cold and damp.

So you wouldnt recommend riding ADH the first time ever in shoes you've never worn and had only just fitted a pair of cleats too?

I thought I'd try mine on now they've been for a ride, and thought the wash. Much the same. The sizing issue isn't the waist, or even the bibs*, it is the leg compression. In simple terms, Chris Hoy need not apply.

*The bibs are noticeably shorter than any others I have, but that goes away when on the bike. That may be seen as a good thing.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

ADH is what an hour or so ride Vs 6 hours ?

Plus and ironman race is a lot more expensive than whatever the cost of riding up an Alpe.

Was a tongue in cheek comment, however I'd say the ADH 16 km at avg 10% was considerably more expensive when you add in the cost of getting there ie flights and a weeks accommodation oh and the entry fee for the marmotte not to mention the shoes in question that cost almost the same again.

The best I've managed to the official finish is 75 mins which I'll take at the end of a lumpy sportive.

Ive always been a bit all or nothing and went for it! I was slow in transitions but super comfy in them, and my arse seems alright today and I put in a decent split

My dickhead mate has messaged me this morning that he hates riding his bike in his cheap Planet X shorts (who'd have thought!?) and tasked me with finding him some new bibs, annoyingly the chpt3 are all gone. Anyone know of some others that can be recommended?

Before DanielB replies... anything with the progetto X2 pad!!!! I've got a pair of Castelli Omloops with longer legs and thicker lycra that work great between 13 and 18C (i.e. Scottish Summer), *as long as* you're happy with the leg length. FreeAeros are highly rated here, but I haven't tried them.

Finally, I also suspect Sportful's TC Pro pad is pretty much the same as Castelli's, plus it comes in at least two thicknesses: 18mm pad for R&D Total Comfort bibs and 13mm pad for the higher end BodyFit Pros (the cheaper ones come with a cheaper pad). For disclosure, I don't really like the cheaper Bodyfit Pro pad on my club kit.

Lol, La Passione have shorts from £85, plus currently a code for 20% off would knock them down to a very reasonable £68.

They have more pricey options too.

Love those omloops too, lucky in that they work nicely with my leg length.

The only LP shorts I have are the Classic ones, back at at a time when I think they only had that model and one other.
Now it looks like they have several different models, but I only have experience of the classic.
I bought mine in June 2015, and they tend to be the default short I reach for when it's a long ride, and I want guaranteed comfort, like a dependable, reliable old friend if you will.

For me, the quality and fit of the material is superb, right up there with a Rapha Pro Team II short, and above the Rapha Core and probably on a par, pad wise, with the Progetto X2, maybe not quite that sublime, but very close, and after 4 years, mine are still going strong, plenty of bounce and firmness in the pad, and wash well.
Mine got some bobbling on the seat area due to my saddle choice on the first or second ride, but slightly strangely, despite me not changing saddle, it has never gotten worse, or caused an issue - bizarre.

That is indeed messed up - lucky for me, as I was considering ordering the next size up, but stuck with the original, hopefully the extra size will not be an issue - will report back in due course.

No they'll be fine just a bit more relaxed than the previous pair, beside gaining weight has never been a problem

That's good news ITB - putting on weight to make your clothes fit is going above and beyond I would say!

Tried my latest Chpt3 bibs on this morning, and I concir they are marginally more roomy than the previous pair, but the fit feels just a touch better, and also I'm pretty certain the short bit it longer which works for me.

Will use them on a group ride this weekend - prefer the material and colour as well in hindsight, to the first ones that were on offer, but those are still oustanding value for the pad.

Never had any problems taking tyres off with the Park tools ones at £3.

For those tyre/rim combinations that won't go back on easily by hand, or if I want to get a tyre on as quickly as possible (dark/rain/cold), I use a kool stop tyre mate (approx £10), which I attach to my mini pump with an elastic band and keep in a jersey pocket.
