Hello everyone......last week I drove to Wales on business (no bike THIS time). Every time I've been this year (4 or so) it has been sunny (and warmish). How bad can it get....is it ridable in the winter?

The crew at my LBS reliably inform me that trails at Cwmcarn and Afan are built to withstand all but the most horrendous weather and drain pretty well even during our winters...

All depends if you can be bothered to drive all that way to get rained on. If I'm going to do that, I'd rather get rained on locally.

  • depends after our session in north wales... I d say a wet ride over ther is better than here. so much rocks hard ground that drains very well.
you do not end up carrying tonnes of mud. There for you can still carry silly speeds.

drive to surrey hills is 1hour, cwm carn is 2 from west london, and with DK driving skills , cut the times by 4 at least. 8)
I d say worth it if its dry or light rain.

    my problem waking up early....

can't view that page. However feel free to browse my tracks: http://bit.ly/db7Cp8. A number of Swinley tracks amongst there.

    You've seen the Swinley Map thread? http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12684311

This map especially is pretty good: http://www.calcot.plus.com/swinleysingletrack2.jpg

It was practically dry by comparison. Or at least you only have to deal with slippery rocks. Little mud. If it's been dry for a day or two I bet it's pretty dry.

That's the trail centres though which seem to be fairly rocky in Wales.

Penmachno wasn't so great though. Still mainly rocks on the actual bits of singletrack, though a lot of puddles, but the vast majority of the trail is mindnumbing fireroads and bleak moorland kind of trails that would suck in high winds & rain/snow.

Somewhat costly when I put my foot down though, but can mean I don't need to get up so early :D

How was Swinley yesterday? Draining at all? I'd like to have somewhere I can try out the bike without struggling through a foot of quagmire as that's really not going to help sort the suspension out.

By the look of this the part I am missing is the whole area were the cockcrow is.
I think I will look for it on Sunday as I am don't think investigating and looking for the entrance of those single track is the smartest thing I could do in the dark :)
This said is anyone riding in Swinley on Sunday?

I would suggest that you ride the MOD part as it is mostly mud free.
    The deer stalker is fine
The gulley is messy as hell (not that really do big jump on my xc bike and barely mended broken leg)
Seagull was just fine to ride, yet again I was riding on a dying front light set on low so I wasn't really breaking any land speed record (not that ever do ;-) )
