@arigold looks like plan is for around 12 bit later than normal but some people can't get out earlier.

The trains to Gomshall from London on Sunday arrive at either 10.40ish or 12.40ish. Also a lift from the station would be fantastic if it's not a bother?

    Thanks.

Probably then the 10.40ish one would be better, or we'll be starting really late.

    So an 11ish start?

    (10.30 in DK time)

  • The ride down to peaslake from gomshall is actually quicker than a car because you can just cut through the cycle route straight down, though might be best to have someone who knows the way along. just so you don't get lost.

In other news, demo'd a nukeproof mega today around leith and it was so nice.... must save quicker.

OK Peaslake 11 tomorrow. BDJ, arigold, Mrb, DK probably (hopefully for some sense of direction) Benpinnick maybe.
@ben - if you remember could you stick the deadly tyres in your car - I should be picking up the old bike next Saturday when the school opens - been stuck there all summer.

    You are such a Toff!

Next weekend hope to take days off so at least could join you riding. Bet my legs need some proper training to keep up with the likes of DK and CD on uphills.

MrB, I bet Mega felt a bit squeedgy with that massive suspension in SH ? Did you feel any roots or it was just like haribo baloony ride on a bike? Well, that's how MrTuTu behaves there. But did you find it sluggish pedalling wise and was it lazy to corner? MrTuTu is very lazy at that unless if I whack lazy bastid hard then it goes alive. But Donkey on other hand is very responsive, I really have changed my mind about HT vs FS. HT = FTW!
    What could have been (Video)

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though
  • The rear shock (a rockshox monarch rc3) felt really nice, the different floodgate options seem to work better than the fox pro-pedal on my trek and unless you hammer it standing up there was no detectable bob (even with floodgate off). The front fork was a coil lyrik but with my puny weight (won't say here people might get jealous) was only getting 10% sag. In general I'd say it was using 60% travel on fast rooty bits and about 75% ish on jumps/drops it felt very progressive/forgiving near the end the travel. The two main surprises were that it actually climbs really really well (especially with a travel reducing fork to around 130mm) though you won't win any speed races and that you can keep the power down pedaling through nearly anything.

Cornering felt good but as it is quite long the faster you go the better it corners, with the rubber queens it had on it would easily get into the letting go but not washing out stage not sure if that was the bike, tyres or both though. The other nice thing was because it is really slack it felt really confident on even the steepest roll ins, was tempted to give deliverance a go but as i was literally the second person ever to ride this bike i decided against the idea :P

The main cons of it are, it isn't a light bike by any means it will do up and along whatever you take it through, but it won't be fast and you may be exhausted :P definitely a down hill orientated bike. I also clipped the pedals afew times on roots, but that might just be me being used to my mmmbops nice high BB. it also has slight issues with tight uphill corners but again i think as you get used to the bike you'd overcome that anyway.

Popstar out next weekend maybe. Damn. The one weekend it looks like I wont get out. Entertaining the parents.

Heavy bike I find is no issue. I'm not aiming for King of the Mountain, I'm just looking for getting to somewhere with nice downs. Once flat or down, the weight is not an issue (and may help with gnarly bits).

Mega is something to consider. Still tempted by a Nomad though. I know it's OTT for Surrey Hills, but I want something that will do the Alps, and the odd DH trail, general all-mountain stuff that can cope with bigger bits. I just need the balls to do that stuff though. Or maybe a Blur. Both like the design and the VPP has a similar effect to the i-drive on my GT so I might not have to get used to pedal bob as I don't have that to deal with.

Anyway, you all missed a nice mini-epic. Sensible plan again, park in Peaslake and ride to Leith to do the trails there and have to ride all the way back. Much more sensible than actually parking up by Leith. :D. Out at 11. Heavens opened, rain, rain, mud, mud, then finally dry in the afternoon.

Makes me happy now as I've welcomed in Autumn/Winter riding.

Hope you all didn't suffer too much. Was a bit of a trek, though not really that many miles. GPS gave up at 9 miles as the battery ran out. I'd estimate maybe 12 in total. Just a lot of up and down.

Back is killing me at the moment. It's perfectly fine during rides. I need to spend all my time riding really. Once I stop it aches like crazy. Still nearly 5 months on from the smash I suppose it's to be expected.

Got a nice supply of them from the hospital I never bothered taking. Some seriously strong stuff. Keeping them for special occasions.

Though there is that field of weed we went past.

Yes I do! It was worth it though. Lots of fun trails at Surrey Hills, I just need to work on my fitness to cope with all the uphill.
  • deadkenny What was the spray you used for the rear shock and rear suspension area on Sunday before the ride? Ben recommended something to me but I forgot what he said. I've just cleaned up my bike, which was caked in mud! After yesterday and have reoilled the chain but I guess it's a good idea to spray the shocks and relevent pivoting places on the rear suspension as well after a good clean?
