Waiting for various things to be sorted this week and don't know what dates I'd be available yet. Would be interested in going on Wednesday though if I can if Whites is the plan.

  • Just got back from a 2 day Afan trip. Lovely weather Sat, horrendous and slippy Sunday.
Did The Wall, Whites Level and W2. Brilliant. Found the climb on W2 from base camp brutal and loved the black run on W2 and ZigZag at the end of The Wall. Made Swinley look so pony. Next Cwncarn for me.

Cwmcarn is fun. Wouldn't mind getting back down there before the end of the year. This place will also get done soonish:

If you want company on Tues evening then head over to M3 J4A for a night with the trolls. It could expand you route horizon.

Heavy rain set for Afan at 10 tomorrow, but clearing for afternoon. Hmm, this should be interesting.

Will be bringing spare top i think for the journey home, just hoping i don't get soaked feet not enough room in my bag for a spare set of shoes
  • You'll need a complete change of clothes for the journey home, you Will be soaked through with mud. OR if you like staying muddy at least something to cover your car seat with.
Waterproof socks are currently a must. The bike shop at Glyncorrwg will sell you some.

Can't be right. Rain in Wales!

Need Popstar with us. Never rains when he's there.
  • If riding Afan in the wet make sure you got spare brake pads. Its gets really gritty there and eats brakes pads for breakfast lunch and dinner

The bike shop at Afan isn't cheap for pads either

Any news / signs of the Penhydd trail reopening ?

Sintered should be okay, if noisy. Got spare anyway.

Penhydd seems to be as usual opening "this summer". They said that last year.

Anyway, looking good to go for me.

The problem being that i'm not driving, and my bag is already nearly bursting full without my camelbak in it :P

Met office now showing dark clouds but no rain. Wouldn't risk it though, expect downpour.

Ended up being a nice welsh cloudy day, no rain, and not to many puddles. Cooldad even enjoyed the final descent this time, and took 5-10 minutes, rather than half an hour. Anyone going to make it up sometime during the weekend? We're planning Brechfa on saturday and cwm carm on Sunday.

I looked into trails near Brecon, there are some but they are of the bridleway and forest road variety mainly. Probably not that much fun, but better than a kick in the teeth.

Good ride, decent pace, for me at least. GPS track uploaded to a few sites.

I really should do the Skyline descent. Popstar and others did it but I haven't yet, looks good.

@Ben, cheers, we're probably going to do Brechfa in that case, a day of big fireroad climbs sounds a bit awful.

  • Hey Guys

Had a look at your thread here and looks like you boys are pretty knowledgable on the surrey hills area.
Thinking of heading down tomorrow morning with a mate and exploring the trails in the area.
Easiest way for us from Clapham is the train to Dorking.
Can you point us in the right direction from there.

    Appreciate the help.
    Thanks alot

The best solution would be LBS and buy a map. As far as I know there are 2 bike shops, but the best bike shop for maps is Pedal and Spoke in Peaslake.

Dorking options would be Leith hill and Redlands. If you guys are new to riding, then Leith hill and Holmbury would serve you best. Easier to navigate around and sweet trails to bomb.

I think there are at least few riders in your area who you could constantly team up with on travels. Will and Naveed, correct me if I'm wrong.
    What could have been (Video)

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though

If you can get to Gomshall, ride over to Peaslake and do the trails on Pitch & Holmbury from there. There are the signature trails like BKB, Yoghurt Pots and Telegraph on Holmbury, and a load of nice trails on Pitch (and further into Winterfold).

Pop into the bike shop in Peaslake and they'll be happy to point you to some trails, or just ask anyone around.

Alternative is from Dorking, go to Westcott and pop into Nirvana Cycles to ask for some directions. They might be doing one of their rides also, but not sure when they do them. From there the route is usually up to Leith.

I'd be up for riding with you but I'm out tomorrow so it's road bike and fettling for me rather than MTB. I don't think I'd describe Will and Nav as much more local as you though Popstar as they're a bit more SW London but both are a bit of a trip from SH,.

munstershaun - However, Popstar is about right. I'd recommend going to Dorking, ride along the road to Westcott, buy a map from Nirvana cycles (or join their Saturday ride) and enjoy. Getting to Peaslake by train is a bit of a mission unless you know the way.

If I or any of us are able to do a ride tomorrow, could join you. Not sure yet if I can make it tomorrow.

Think Sunday is going to be tricky for Surrey Hill rides as the London-Surrey Cycle Classic test ride for the Olympics is on Sunday with many road closures in the area.
