So, I lobbed myself down the stairs again today (no arm/hand injury this time) so not sure about my riding for the next week or two. However, who's up for a midweek Wales sometime soon? I've got 5 days holiday to use up in the next 9 weeks so feel like getting out to somewhere. Perhaps Cwmcarn uplift on a weekday perhaps?

On the bike front, I bet Popstar is going for one of these badboys in order to be a "real man" ;)

Do you mean the 17 - 20 Feb?

I'd like to join in but don't think I can make Feb.

Currently got the Friday 18th Feb off. Weather permitting it's crying out for a Cwmcarn day... will decide closer to the time

  • I can't do any week day rides, I have to work. Anyone out this weekend?

This weekend depends for me on whether I stop having to take painkillers even to get myself to work. That said, today it's not feeling too bad. Any preferences for location, I half feel like Swinley or even further afield (Woburn?)

Moving this weekend so I'm out. Going to miss my leafy estate.
Only bright point is the new place is only a few minutes away from Swinley.

Since when do you work weekends?

That's kinda what it's sounding like to me. and a perfect opportunity to test your new wheels.

Woburn is a bit of a trek for me (read: can't be arsed :D).

Probably will stick around Surrey Hills this weekend. Will keep an eye on things here in case of anything interesting.

Cwmcarn later in the month - probably not as there's potential for me to do something stupid and break something just before I go off skiing. After first couple of weeks in March I'm fine :D.

I'll confirm IF I'm able to ride on Saturday. Will grab the ss and put some miles in on the road to see whether I'm fit. LOT of pain right now unfortunately :/

Maybe a more relaxed Swinley ride for injured riders. Cooldad - not going to be done with the move by some time Sunday?

I need to get back to Winterfold & Pitch though. Haven't done that area for weeks and missing it. My favourite area locally at the moment.
  • I'm happy to go swinley and just session labyrinth to get my flow back again, still feeling not quite right after the accident

Might be but need to move and clean the old place Saturday, so was planning Sunday unpacking etc etc etc.

Will keep an eye on here if I can (no proper internet in the new place yet, just my phone, which thel33ter magically turned into a mobile dongle thingy).

  • Interesting thread over on singletrackworld. I have reported illegal features and feature builders to the Ranger and will continue to do so. In my eyes, the beauty of the Surrey Hills is the natural feel of the "trails". If you've ever been to a purppose built trail centre, you'll know what I mean.

I'm not opposed to MTBers running in existing paths or lines to create trails. After all, this is how most of the existing trails got started. We have to remember we are supremely lucky on the Hurtwood as we have the right to roam so, we as bikers, can ride any existing trail (subject to signage).

I once saw two kids out in broad daylight one summer evening with shovels attempting to build some kind of feature just off a section of BKB. A few choice words and a call to the Ranger soon saw them scarper. Later on I went back and kicked down what they had built

The area does have a big problem with increased usage though and, IMO, the Friends don't seem to have any plan to deal with this. I do believe more sanctioned trails are necessary to cater for the increased usage and that the existing trail network should be more proactively maintained.

I have tried to get involved but have yet to hear a single word from anybody I've contacted re; trail maintenance/building days.

I would suggest as many MTBers join the Friends as possible and also attend the annual meeting on April 12 to put forward our views.

The only new sanctioned trail I'd like to see is a trail going from the end of telegraph, all the way to the start of BKB. There are bits and pieces there you can link together but spend a fair bit on the fire roads also, but a nice proper built trail could snake around, with climbs and descents and head over to reservoir dogs then follow that to BKB.

Other than that, the rest should be left natural. Not that there's much on Holmbury and thankfully that seems to be where most people go, leaving Pitch, Winterfold to the rest of us.

If you make it 09:00 and are willing not to stop every 5 minutes there is a ride leaving from Go Ape @ 09:00 sharp for a 46km XC loop (mostly made of single track except when in Sandhurst due to the lack of them yet still avoiding most of the fireroad
Slow but sustain pace is the plan so stamina required

  • I'm good for 9.30 for a shorter ride at my own pace, plus I enjoy running labyrinth a few times and getting them dialed in.
