This is my VN Chinook. Cycled in to work on it this morning and it was great. So fast and smooth that it almost made me forget that I'd barely spun the pedals in the last 6 months. . . . almost.
It's right at the top. And bloody freezing...

It's a great ride, not the lightest though but still climbs well!
Normally this is my winter steed, but after selling my good summer bike a few months back & new bike not arriving till late, I had to make a few adjustment so to take it for a week to Majorca last week. Which I was actually really looking forward to and it did not disappoint even on the climbs (more on the rider) & especially when descending on those lovely roads, pure magic!
I was also confident that the bike would survive the air plane baggage handlers even though I had minimal padding transporting it in a cardboard bike box! Such is the strenght of titanium I suppose!
Anyway, now that I've got my new carbon bike, the VN is back to its winter/foul weather mode again
Hope you like it!
Happy Cycling everyone!
Cheers0 -
You know ive been compiling a list for my next bike and always in the back of my mind is the thought of titanium, just nagging away at me but largely ignored whilst i look at countless carbon bikes.
This thread has now convinced me to o titanium, theres not a bike on here i dont love, actually there is 1 but i'll keep that to myself ! Classy understated but stunning looking bikes.
So now to start the Ti research !!0 -
Alright mr_sj,
I hope that "1" is not mine? Just kidding!
Anyhow, I can safely say you'll not regret the Ti choice. Well, I know I didn't anyway!
Enjoy & good luck on your quest!
P.S What's on your Ti shortlist if you don't mind me asking?
Regards0 -
Well ive only just decided 100% to go Ti so the list is starting today but i have yet to see a van nicholas or enigma i havent loved and some of the lynskey frames are simply stunning.
Bit of research needed to see if anyone stocks titanium locally as i'd like to see some in the flesh, getting excited already !0 -
if you can afford it then get a legend queen frame. probably the nicest Ti frame ive ever seen.BMC TM01 - FCN 0

A little bump for the Ti club.
I decided to change some grubby red bar tape for a bit of retro brown along with the charge spoon saddle from my mountain bike. Tempted to go for some skin wall tyres now but it might be going a bit too retro!

Does anyone have any experience of ti seatposts. I'd be lying if I said the primary reason for wanting one was anything other than for some bling but I'd be interested to hear if they make any tangible difference to comfort etc.?
Any recommendations? I've seen a few on eBay for around £50 and a Van Nicholas one for around £100 but are they really worth it?0 -
I don't think you can beat a 27.2 carbon post for comfort...Insta: ATEnduranceCoaching

Here's a Colnago CT2 that I bought for and rode in the 2008 Etape. Descends beautifully, probably the best handling bike I've owned, better than my current Cervelo R3SL and Giant TCR Advanced.
It's for sale and someone has dobs on it so perhaps he can post it when it's build up again, here's the bare frame: http://www.flickr.com/photos/95763085@N05/When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.0 -

What are using at the moment? I swapped an alloy Thomson for a Ti Van Nic post on my Van Nic. It improve comfort a lot plus it really finishes the bike off nicely. Got it off ebay for £65. Can't comment on carbon posts as never used one.Specialized Venge S Works

I've currently got a relatively cheap carbon FSA one. If I could get a VN one for £65 then I might be tempted. I take it all the bolts on a VN one are titanium too?0

If you're looking for comfort buy these in 25c: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... itttyrf261
How a rigid strut which can withstand 200+ kgs of load before appreciably deforming could make a difference to your soft crinkly bits is beyond me. Vertical deflection is found in tyre side walls and a bit of saddle foam.
Of course that fact didn't stop me, ever the optimist, from ditching my 30.9mm Thomson Elite, buying a 27.2 carbon USE Alien plus a 27.2-30.9 shim. Net difference to comfort? Nada. Net difference to wallet? £80. And the Alien is insanely frusrtating to set up. Changing seatposts is pointless.
Unless it's a coblgblr or the new Ergon/Canyon leaf spring thingy or a Thudbuster or a USE Shockpost.When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.0 -
Word of warning with the VN Ti posts. The seat clamp is a faf and wont fit all saddle rails. Also due to the way if claps round the rails I would not trust it with a CF rail saddle. I heard somewhere else that the weld on the post can fracture. Mine was ok but was more for looks than comfort. I would not pay £100 for the post - got mine free with the bike as the bike shop messed up up my build! A nice 3T CF jobbie will look just as cool.0

Nice facelift for what was already a stunning bike, I definately prefer the black bar tape to the previous white. How do the new wheels compare to the Mavic's they replaced?Road - http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40044&t=12777154&p=16943702#p16943702

Putting the new wheels on was like having a brand new bike to ride :-) They made so much difference it's amazing. Although I weighed them as slightly heavier, they feel a lot smoother and they roll a lot quicker. I'm running 25mm tyres instead of 23mm with latex tubes also but they are coming out before the weekend as I'm riding the Southern Sportive on Sunday. The Chris King hubs are an import from the US.2010 Lynskey R230

Here is mine, Lynskey r340, sram etc etc - just about to have some new wheels on it. Lovely smooth ride on a compact its my go to bike in the winter and for long hilly rides0

Loving the bike, can I ask what wheels you have on there plse?? just in the process of buying some new ones for myself

whereisthurso I have a Van Nic Ti post second hand sitting in my shed that I would be willing to sell to you. PM me if interested. I had it fitted to my VN Chinook but swapped it out for a carbon FSA post for a little more comfort. I do not have much seat post showing so I found the Ti post just a little harsh. I don't think it would be a problem if you have more post out of the frame as it looks you do by your pic. They do look better than a carbon post IMO.
BTW i would go for skin wall tyres. I am just building some Ambrosio Nemesis wheels and am going for 25mm skin wall tubs for the winter. Will post a pic when it's ready.0 -
Wheels:
They will be H Plus Son Archetype Rims with Chris King hubs and, most likley, Sapim CX Ray spokes. (difficult to tell from the pic)
Probably about £600 worth.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
