I'm struggling to see how a single pivot caliper can be an 'improvement' over a double - regardless of the weight saving.....

    Don't buy any then.

thanks for the tip....you just saved me £100 of pointless expenditure... :)

I didn't buy them for any performance 'improvement'. I got them purely for weight and bling purposes.

    For that they excel.

The type of riding I do on the Look I don't need the absolute stopping power of the Red...

That said, they are supposed to work very well.

I'm interested to know the answer too though, nice looking kit and good VFM considering the outlay vs weight saving.

    Indeed.

In fact, not been out on my blinged up winter bike either!

Me neither, my brand new Planet X Ti Sportive hasn't been used for about a week!
  • Rotor Q-Ring just arrived. Put it on in my dinner hour. Looks great. Hopefully get out on it for a couple of hours in the morning :D

Forgot to weigh mine first, but weighed the Reds after I took them off, they were 282g!
  • Wow those CNC calipers look exactly like my forged ones. I have to say adjusting is really a pain in the ass compared to dual pivot brakes.

calipers as per planet x 205g on the nose.

I think I'll get some of the carbon handled ones for 30 quid, the 'free' ones weigh the same as my Zipp ones.

Anyhoo, just dropped a load of cash on a very shiny new toy!!
  • Just ordered the test saddle as an xmas treat off my lovely fiancee,

Would be interested to know who has this now, and what its like.

Also what seatposts does it fit? all or just some?

I've just bought the extra bars/stem that Squillnossett had on offer so looking forward to getting them even though the weather up here means I've no chance of getting out on my bike for at least a week or more  will just have to fit the bars, buy some new Zipp tape ready to go as soon as things clear up :D

So, I fitted my 120mm Zip stem and bars last week. Finally got chance to use them today on the Turbo. Straight away I noticed that my position was different. After my session I have measured my 120mm stem and it comes up (centre to centre) as 125mm. My old Easton is bang on 120mm.

Anyone else had the same problem? Overall with the extra length and drop from saddle to bars I am now extended by a full 1cm further than I was before and considering I was on the limit of my reach previously this is 1cm too far. I developed a pain in my back on a 45 minute turbo session, so god knows what it will be like come the summer and long rides.

My poor experiences with Planet X continue. :(

The stem is a 120mm, are you measuring correctly? the distance is along the middle of the stem rather than the top.

    My 110mm is bang on.

The stem is a 12.5 deg one though so that will lower your bars. and if you are measuring along the top will cause

Everything was on the P-X site Chris,

Ok, to continue where we left off on Twitter. I measured along the top as you could see from pic. Not sure if that is right, but it measures 125mm c-c on the top and, you are right it measures 120mm c-c if I go down the side. The Easton that it replaced measured 120mm c-c along the top and measures 115mm c-c along the side.

I accept what you say about the angle difference and agree that will be part of the difference, but there is still a difference between the length of the Easton stem ot the Zipp one. :?

Yep, that's it. The link you put on mentions Easton stems have their length stamped on them. I have just found it down the left hand side of the front clamp and guess what it says....

    110mm

Measuring along the top means I had it pegged as a 120mm stem, I had never looked closely enough to the left side of front plate to consider it was 110mm - and in any case, even measuring down the side it comes out at 115mm!?!

So it looks like the Zipp one is bang on (measuring down the side) and I have myself a problem....

    Clearly NOT Planet X's fault.

    Thanks for your help James.

Well it seems that Eastons are longer than they are supposed to be.

Can you fit an extra spacer under the stem?

I have no spare spacers above the stem, unless I could squeeze another on, then no. I think I might be about to go shopping! :D

Would moving the saddle slightly forward make any difference? Or would that just move your body into a less effecient/powerful position, etc?

Wow... I was thinking of swooping in here, with an offer for the stem.
So I nipped out to the garage to confirm my stem lengths, both of which I thought were 110mm.
Best bike =FSA. Says 100mm on the stem, measures 115mm
Winter bike = Easton. Can't see what it says, but measures 120mm
    Now, I'm confused...
Fcuk it! Back to the mince pies....

I am sure it would make a difference, but I am reluctant to move the saddle forward. I know it is only 1cm, but I am more than happy with the saddle position and my knee position over the pedal. I know power can be affected, but more important to me is avoiding the knee problems I suffered from a few years back due to poor equipment and position.

Rather purchase a new stem. Which I did yesterday. Got myself an Oval R700 winging its way to me now. I'm not sure what I am going to do with the Zipp stem, probably keep hold of it for now until i am certain that the position is correct using the Oval.
