Picked up a frame from the classifieds on here yesterday morning, then in varying bursts of activity over the weekend in between family life turned it into a bike by fitting the Ultegra g/s that's been in an ice-cream tub in the garage since last year when I upgraded, plus the spare wheels that were hanging on the wall, and all completed by a minor spending splurge on new cables (inners + outers), stem, spacers, pedals, chain, bar & bartape. I now have a very nice winter hack / spare bike that's reminded how good a simple bike is to ride. Lovely.

Rebuilt the rear hub (shimano XT) using the replacement hub as a donor that CRC sent me. Stripped the Crank and BB, serviced and re-fitted.

Fettled with the brakes, and adjusted the gears.

Still got a clicking coming from the crank... Arrrggghhhh.

    Tightened the pedals?
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Loosen the pedals and retighten them then check the chainring bolts. Could it be the rider and not the bike?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Well it aint the chainrings!

FML, it must be the BB that is knackered after the winter regardless of sundays service.

I'm just going to deal with it until i get the peugeot up and running and then bung it in for a service /overhaul.

That's interesting I actually found 5700 105 to be easier to index than the 5600 105 although both are sensitive to the outer cable length between the frame and derailleur being correct (ensure that the outer goes into both as close to 90degrees as possible).

The cable inner is also supposed to be a teflon coated one but I don't know how important that is as I'm still using the cable that came with my shifter. ;)

Built myself a new set of track wheels last night; Ambrosio Excellights on Token hubs. Now I can put a bigger sprocket on the other side of the rear wheel for warming up, and no more faffing around with the cheap and nasty cup & cone bearings that came with the bike :-)

A collision a few years ago has lead to persistent neck/back/shoulder pain and my physio recommended adjusting my bike fit. The bike I'm currently riding has a bigger frame than I'm used to but I built it up in a rush from spares after my fixie was nicked and I've just changed from a monster 12cm stem that was put on my first road bike (which I now know was too small for me) to an 8cm stem that I had spare (and should have put on in the first place).

    What a revelation!

I've only taken the bike on a spin around the block but it feels so much better. The commute to work will be more of a test though.
Now it only needs new chain rings, a new chain, a new cassette, a new front wheel, a new headset and a new fork. Assuming I get on with the new stem, I may even go so far as wrapping the bar tape after over a year of naked bars.

Swapped 105 calipers for Athena and Tektro RL340 levers for Sram S00 on the SS followed by a re-tape.

Contact point positions are almost exactly the same as the Scott.

Cleaned, tweaked the front derailer to rub less when I cross chain, added two bottle cages, lubed up and ready for the Cyclone 104miler tomorrow.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Fitted bb, cranks, handle bars and brake levers to the bike I'm giving to my mate.

Only after the cranks were on did did I notice that the chain ring was on the inner mount, not the outer. Bb must have been too long when these cranks were last mounted..

Removed cassette and replaced the 1mm spacer with a new one, gears now shifting reliably and quietly - phew!

Now to rustle up something to quieten the noise coming from my pump handle, inner tubing i think.

Cleaned the bike and oiled chain etc, and stuck a clear sticker to stop cable run, wearing though the paint.

All really for the Capital to Coast tomorrow

New Swissstop Green blocks on the rear of the SS, but they've only lasted 1200 miles. It seems a bit short to me.

Weather has been crappy and that eats pads.

Greens are being replaced by the Blue BXPs which are awesome.

Not yet, but it's the plan for the kiddie carrier - got all the bits, just not the time.

Finally swapped SPD pedals for SPD-SL and am now a full on lycra warrior commuter waddling into work from the bike shed. Must look for some sort of cleat cover solution as after literally one commute the cleats are already visibly damaged...
