Filed down my fork crown on a bike I'm building up so the race would fit. It was sucessful but not without injury. I'm going to have to buy some touch-up paint to repaint the scratches. Bummer.

built two bikes by transferring all the parts from one to a new frame then fitting new chorus 11 speed to the donor bike.

Mtb was creaking when I pedaled, so whipped the cranks off, checked the bb was tight, cleaned and regreased and refitted cranks. Then redid the drive side as I'd managed to jam the chain between frame and inner chainring

Took bike for test ride down the snowy road.

    It still creaks

I was bored so I adjusted the saddle height and re-torqued every bolt on the Cervelo

Erm then I fitted a handlebar brass bell, ding ding!

Slush kept clogging up my guards every time I left the cold comfort of the road so I adjusted them for more clearance and hopefully less bogging down in the slushy bits.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Very nice indeed but you forgot, also to add brakes?

actually that too nice to be a fixies hipster winter commuter, i suppose your intending on using it at the track?

Serviced the front hub cause it moves side to side on the spindle but didn't have enough bearings to replace the old ones so bought new and will have to use a spare front wheel and have odd tyres along with odd wheels on the SS for a couple of days.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Just fitted new SPD pedals on my two bikes and moved my pretty red metal Wellgos on to the EPOs xmas present which is also red. She is happy. Also fitted cleats to my new Shimano shoes.

Not really fettling, but put new 32GB SD card in my helmet cam. Hopefully next time a white van man decides to side swipe me off the road, then get out and assault me, I wont have just run out of space on the camera!

Just had a go on the hybrid up and down my road for the first time on SPDs (after toe clips). WOW - can't wait to get on the road bike tomorrow now.

Tomorrow I ride to my sisters to fit SPDs to my brother in laws bike and give it a service. He's been commuting 24 miles a day for 4 months (thats about 2000 miles), on the bike as it came out of Hellfords with 0 maintenance. Actually thats a lie, I bought him a track pump for xmas, so I think he has pumped the tyres up a couple of times now! The poor things chain is dry and rusty, the cassette already looks worn and he broke a spanner trying to get the pedals off unsupervised!!! So I'm riding over with my pedal wrench and "expertise", i.e. youtube on smartphone. I hope he has a hammer. Going to drag him to the LBS to buy some WD40, oil and grease - he asked if cooking oil or hair grease would work, he was lucky I wasn't holding something sharp or heavy.

Fitted fizik saddle to the steel roadie also gave it a quick buff, then swapped UT for PT campag shifters yuck!

Also pretended to clean the MTB

So I went to the rescue of my brother in laws Hellfords BSO today. Its not too bad, its a Voodoo Marasa, its got disc brakes... :|

Actually, it is pretty naff - the EPOs bike cost the same, it is two thirds the weight and is the right size for her.

First I frogmarched him to Hellfords and made him buy some grease, oil and degreaser. It cost him about £12 and he complained that maintaining a bike was expensive... (this is after I gave him some £65 SPD shoes and some £20 SPD pedals)

When we got back I had a good look at the bike...

I'm surprised the BIL is still alive. The bike was generally OK, apart from a rusty chain and EVERY SPOKE ON THE FRONT WHEEL BEING VERY VERY LOOSE!!!

It was so bad that half of them were sat in the nipples but not screwed up at all, they were just rattling about in there. Worst wheel build I have ever seen. The wheel was considerably buckled having done over 1000 miles like this, but because the bike has disc brakes, and the BIL could only manage to put 30psi in the tyres, he hadn't noticed...

I tightened up the spokes so that they all had some tension in them, trued the wheel enough to get rid of the egg and tamed the side to side sensation as best I could, put 100psi in the tyres, fitted his new SPD pedals, tightened everything and cleaned and lubed the drive train. I made him go out for a ride on it and he came back amazed at how different it was and how much faster it went. He did moan that the ride was quite a bit bumpier, he was lucky I wasn't holding anything sharp or heavy.

Gave the bike a massive scrub and degrease after trashing it over the last 2 weeks on the gritted roads. Re-treued the wheels and got it all running smoothly

Went out for a pedestrian 20 miles. And its bloody rattling. AAAHHH

Built a new wheel for the roadie - IRD rim, Novatec hub, DT Swiss spokes. Forgot to order nipples so had to raid the Scrap Box - I can't be the only one that strips wheels down for salvage when they die?

Took the Marathon Winters off the commuter. Found the cup-and-cone bearings on the rear axle were really tight so backed them off a bit. Plenty of grease in there; they were OK when I fitted the snow tyres a week ago so I guess the locknuts must have moved in the cold. Bit weird.

Had to clean up the callipers on the charge ss, noticed how much grime had built up so half-assedly cleaned it before giving up as a bad job when i saw the state of the chain and running out of daylight/warmth..

Callipers were totally kakked up and wouldn't release after braking :o noticed how little (nothing there) the pads had worn down to, so replaced only one pair as i wasnt sure if i was ordering the right bits at the time  Not sure if callipers are back on straight either, no time to google or get the Parktools BBB as i had already lost feeling in both hands :|

Oddly though i did try to determine which long drop callipers would be a suitable upgrade but, it all got a bit confusing! Think i need to read some.. appeared to have recessed hex nut on rear & the front has standard washer/nut through the forks :?

Debating on changing the winter marathons in the morning, now its so warm again

    This ^

    1. managed to locate the problem with my sticky rear Disc - the cable is frayed! so only on one brake at the moment.
    2. BB is creaking like Fook. not sure if I have over tightened or not, but looking to get a new Crankset to go with the BB that I have lying around at home.
    3. Both front and rear tyres are knackered. TBF I have done over 8000 miles on them and they could do with replaceing.

So an expensiveish trip to the interweb shops beckons.

Other than that. its all shiny and smells nice.

  • Spent ages yesterday repairing both of my over shoes with patches made from inner tube. The area under the toes had worn right through - so it was either repair or new pair.

Took bloody ages to do and broke a needle in the process.

    Leaving the dream.

Thoroughly cleaned the commuter. Had to pop out on Sat morning when the roads where covered in a sticky, salty paste which got everywhere. Was forced to use the Summer bike on Sunday's ride, so that needed a very thorough clean when I got home (I ended up cleaning it in the bath). The roads are covered in so much crap at the moment.

Changed my front pads on the commuter. I wanted to change all of them but found I only had two spare pads. Chose to change the front ones because they are used in emergencies and they were so worn that I realised I'd completely unscrewed the barrel adjuster in order to get them to work.

Couldn't undo one of the retaining bolts (any allen bolt below a 4mm is designed not be removable as far as I'm concerned) and so had to dismantle and clean the shoes.

I should do this more often.

Needle nose pliers got the pad retaining bolt off but I still had to cut the pad out with a Stanley knife.
