New RD cable as the old one snapped in the shifter, flushed out the housings and fitted and reindexed which it has done a lot better and new specialized bar phat tape with the gel pads as my hands were taking a beating with thin fizik tape even on a carbon bar.

BB gave out on the way home, luckily I had a spare waiting for this moment.

Removed BB and all the bearings fell out on the floor - it wasn't pretty! but basically, i have been embarrassed riding the last two days as the creaking was getting worse, so the failure - luckily only 200 meters from home was a good send as it could have happened 8 miles into a 15 mile commute.

So New BB and now its quiet and smooth.

Replaced rear wheel bearings (Fulcrum Racing 7) using tools no more special than a rubber mallet and 2 different bits of dowel!. Well chuffed with myself. Bearings bought from E bay for £3 each (following advice from this site).

Something wasnt quite right this morning with the left crank arm, it felt like there was a massive amount of play, so I stop mid commute. Dismount and have a look and the crank comes off in my hands, It appears that I hadnt tightened it after the BB replacement. Thank god for a Topeak Alien is all I can say.

A quick tighten and then I was on my way again and the play/movement has gone.

All gears gone off the Ribble now. Well apart from the inner chainring as I forgot to get some shorter chainring bolts. Lot it though, so smooth, a little spinny at 53:18 but can still hit 31/32mph...

Took the Mavic CXP 22 wheels off the Felt, including ugly white tyres. Removed and cleaned cassette, put it on my new black Pro-Lite Braccianos with GP 4000s and fitted to the Felt. Cleaned chain. Cleaned the frame. Also replaced brake blocks, didn't need to but got carried away with my online shop, and the colours match better than the old black ones. Looks sooooo much better, and is a tad lighter. Not managed to get the gears to change smoothly yet though, grrrr.

Anyone got any good advice for setting up a 105 rear derailleur? When I put the new wheel on the cassette position had moved a fair bit away from the hub. I have managed to get the chain to go to each cog, but its not very snappy. Tried tightening and slackening the cable, set the H and L screws up correctly and fiddled with the barrel adjuster. No joy yet...

I then took the Mavic wheels (and white tyres) and fitted them to the EPOs new Pinnacle Neon and fitted new brake blocks (again I didn't really need to, but the colours match better than the old black ones). Had to move 8 speed cassette, which I was worried about but it fitted fine. Took me ages to get off the Pinnacle - the factory / Evans had been a bit too enthusiastic and put it on VERY tightly indeed. I had to go to the shed to get a bigger tool! Also fitted the colour matched bullet valve caps. Dialled in brakes and gears. Contemplated cutting the bars down, but left it for the weekend. The Neon looks sooo much better, in fact it looks pretty bad-ass! I took it for a quick spin and its pretty fast too.

I then put the wheels from the Neon on my old Scott Sportster as its old rims were knackered. Fitted a new cassette whilst I was at it, and cleaned the chain. Cleaned the filthy frame. Also put new brake blocks on it, this one actually needed them. Looks very smart, i.e. soooo much better! Bike dialled in straight away, will be testing it out on tomorrows commute :-)

Not bad for an evenings work; 3 bikes with new wheels, brake blocks and all cleaned.

Knocked up a bracket for the twin MJ-818s. Fits on the Topeak saddle clip. Still have to loctite the mounting bolt and fit some bar end bungs into the ends of the tube.

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

The saddle has had that small rip for 4 years and it hasn't got any bigger, if it does then I'll invest in some more cutlery.

My spoon has a similar injury I only noticed as after a spit n polish yesterday, not had any incidents think it was the crud n cold taking its toll.

Building up the mach 1 wheel set with gp4s which was a right wrestle, noticed the axle is too short to fix the 10-14mm axle top hat converters and have plenty of thread for the track nuts, was hoping some primo Andy's nuts would be the answer to non cheese-metal track nuts I need to figure out length required and a quality source for axles :?

Having disabled the Sigma merely by changing the brakes blocks, I've finally got off my backside and fitted a new rear brake cable. Not as much of a white-knuckle ride when you're not reliant on cantis...

  • Rapid onset of a loud grinding noise halfway home on Saturday night had me deeply suspicious of my rear hub. Had enough time before work today to check it over, revealing the drive-side ball-race completely dry of lube, with nothing fluid bar some brownish water. Clearly, time in a snowdrift is executing it's price.

Anyway, a quick clean and wipe and regrease, and once more sweet silence reigns.

Done a bulk repair on 5 punctured tubes and made sure they were repaired properly by doing dunking them in the bath which they all passed. Mind you the OH wasn't too impressed, perhaps I should have waited till she finished in the bath.

Finally put the tarty yellow bar tape on, it looks pretty good.

New rear brake cable, I can finally stop the bike now, although it will need a further fettle. Just waiting on delivery of a new chain and cassette and the focus will be like new.

as much as i love my charge ss, i'm really starting to dislike the Charge brand..

the 'Dish' front wheel axle on my Plug Freestyler finally gave up yesterday, well it was made of cheddar and i had crossthreaded in anger at the roadside - so swapped for spare qr wheel to keep me going.. (I've a new wheelset just sat waiting till the weather gets nicer mind)

Thinking i could replace the axle component on original, i started to dismantle the axle noticing the sealed cartridge bearings i couldn't shift the axle either :? looks like its propriety :( so i emailed chargebikes to query my spec.
i could accept the first bit about kak axle but, the end where i asked about the stupid axle-fork top-hat adaptors required to fit a normal wheel axle in the fork was irritating to say the least.. not one straight answer for something they bloody built, anyway here's most of the reply :(
My gut feeling is that it will not be possible to change the axle due to the lips machined onto the axle as a bearing seat. This will be custom for the hub body/ bearing. If you did want to remove the other bearing you will just need to tap the bearing out of the hub body with a drift internally. You may have to get a steel axle machined to match the current axle if you wanted a beefier one.

The spacers on the Carhaart Plug Freestyle edition and Iron bike we have here are 10-12mm axle adaptors. You may want to double check with your existing ones and measure the hole in the dropout.

Adjusted the headset on the ribble so i could actually turn the bars, which made riding home a lot easier

Fitted some new planet-x forks onto the pompetamine which seems to have 'fixed' the handling. It's now feels lovely 'n direct.

Also fitted a flat bar 'n some avid speed dial levers. Loving it now! :)
  • Just replaced my rear wheel, (which for me is a big step up from my usual fettling). A donated wheel from a friend of low quality so I'm now scouting for a new pair of wheels and I can do it all over again!

He's just given you a wheel ffs, you could cut him a bit of slack.
  • Bled the brakes of the Cube Reaction Race. The Formula instructions that came with the kit were shockingly poor, swapping to Italian and back part-way through. Continued the battle of keeping the calipers working through all of the salt on the road.

    campag or shimano?
  • He is a friend of high quality, the wheel is gash. Omega Mach 1. I'm very grateful for the loan but I'm interested in upgrading as soon as the right deal appears. I'm currently running Shimano 105 and I see there are some good discounts on Shimano wheels on Ribble. Just need to make up my mind, and open my wallet!

That reminds me, brake cables and tyres to fit, bike to clean and gear to index.

Turned out I needed a new rear mech so replaced the rear gear cable too. The brake cables can wait. Summer tyres on, hope the snow and ice is done for the year.

Rear making a rough noise when spinning on commute in, thinking it was just chain needing some tlc

think the weather/roads have taken its toll on either rear hub bearings or freewheel, was going to have a fettle at lunch but realised i've had my toolset out of my bag, due to playing with xc setup over weekend.
Resorted to a quick oil of the chain and praying it'll get me home without further damage..
