Thread To Tell Everyone What Fettling You've Just Done

Removed the rack as it was making it hard to get round to where i store it at work inside with the weight at the back and the pannier sticking out going round corners and up and down stairs. I did give it a week or so but not for me.0

Removed the forks carried over from the old frame and fitted the new ones that came with the warranty replacement frame, cut to the right height and properly seated & sealed.
Checked that the rubber washer between left crank and BB was the right way round. It was.
Ran a bit of bathroom white sealant into the redundant gear cable inlet holes in the frame at the headset end and the outlets by the BB, to keep the water out now that we're into biblical rain patterns.
Stood back & smiled at it.0 -
After riding through 12" water yesterday the chain was lacking some lubrication so that was dealt with last night and tonights fettling has been to remove the tyre and tube from the rear wheel after the tube went BANG! after the tyre split where it meets the rim.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

New Superstars BB7 organic pads for the front of the Volagi. Superstars pads have worked really well on the Cube Reaction so I thought I'd try them on the V. The delivery from Superstars is fantastic - ordered Friday - arrived Sat am - all for a fraction of the price of Avid pads from the big boys. As mentioned elsewhere, also coated the V in anti-dirt polish. Also tweaked the rear mudguard.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

I used to use those pads on my mtb as they worked a treat, still got a set somewhere I never got around to using.0 -
Fitted new external BB, Tiagra chainset and new pedals to the road bike, and Koolstop salmon pads.
New chain, cassette, BB, and jockey wheels on the MTB, plus an unfinished investigation of why my last set of brake pads wore out in 150 miles.0 -

Not technically fettling but I went through the moving boxes marked 'garage drawers and cupboards' and have sorted out all my bike tools, consumables and parts, and transferee them into a nice new red wheelie storaged container and multi-drawer tool chest.
Everything else was shoved back in a box and dumped in the corner.Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX

Fitted new STIs to my Jake after shredding the left shifter by overshifting it. Cant believe how much tidier the under tape routing of the new 105 shifters is compared to the old. Not to mention significantly improved shifting.
Now to see if I can resurrect the left shifter and sell the old ones second hand.
Its also the first time my bikes have been clean since April I think. That will last until the first time I use them.

A simple task: change a BB and crankset.
First, drive side pedal would not come off the old crankset. And I tried a LOT of force on it. To the point of thinking I was about to twist the hex bit with the torque wrench. So removed crankset and left WD40 to go to work on the threads.
Got old BB out. All going swimmingly.
Look at new BB. Nothing to say which is drive side. Hmm. Maybe they are interchangeable. Took about 25 mins to get one cup in. All my weight on the tool. Quarter turn, reset. Very odd.
Same on the other side, except it wasn't going all the way in. Very very odd.
Remove the cups and examine the threads. I noticed that i have completely destroyed the red anodised finish around the teeth indents on the cups. Wrecked. This thing was brand new an hour ago and now looks like I've used a hammer and chisel to get it in.
Then I notice the very small L and R on the cups. A clue? Yes. They go in by hand if you put them in the correct side. Score one for the clarity of Campy and SRAM, which say helpful things like "Drive side".
But still I can't get the second cup all the way in. Much cursing and swearing until I remove them and look at the sleeve. Ah. 73mm. MTB sized. No fecking good to me. I should send the whole BB back to the ebayer seller who listed it as 68mm. Except I've destroyed it. Bollox.
Then try using the sleeve from the old Shim BB. At last, the BB goes in! Oh. The crankset won't go through the BB though. Feckity feck feck.
ETA: not to be defeated so easily, I took the NDS cup off, ran the crankset through the DS cup, and then mounted the NDS cup. Bingo! It looked like all I had to do now was mount the NDS crankarm. Better just see how freely this puppy moves first though. Gave the DS crankarm a spin - well, tried to, because the bastard thing was jammed solid on my Heath Robinson BB invention. Arse, muthaf****er, shiteballs, c***ing f***er, etc...
Give up in utter disgust at the total failure and put the Shim stuff back on the bike.
The good news is that the WD40 did the trick.

After 23 mile of snow on and off road the bike was filthy, front and rear brakes and guards covered in snow. Good clean and lube and it gets to sleep in the house tonight to dry off.
Also had to adjust the front brake a little.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
New wheels on the focus - Mavic CXP S rims on XT Hubs, so that meant changing over the rotors and fitting the gatorskins from the Carrera (while I await delivery of the GP 4 seasons), New Tiagra cassette fitted for the winter sludge.
All in all happy with the progress and the wheels are great.
Changed the Marathon Pluses from the now spare wheels for the Racing Ralphs that I had lying around, wheels awaiting new rotors and another Tiagra Cassette.
Marathon pluses on the Carrera.

Replaced the 25 year-old solid plastic brake pads on the chrome wheeled Pug with some new salmon ones. Nearly went over the handlebars the first time I applied them this morning! Looking forward to trying them in the wet soon.0

A very minor thing but given I haven't been riding 'properly' for long, not since I was arsing about as a kid and got my Dad to do servicing, but I'm very pleased I finally got around to changing my brake pads. The rears were really low (lots of movement on the lever - v-brakes).
Bought the wrong thing at first but have now fitted some red Kool Stop pads to replace the stock ones that came with the bike. Had to adjust a few things though - hoping for a straight swap - as one side was rubbing on the rim. Looked up about 'centering' and adjusted the little screw accordingly.Specialized Allez Elite 2011 *NEW*

Spent a productive saturday stripping down the Genesis SS. Mismatched brakes removed a replaced with a shiny set of 105 Calipers with Kool Stop pads. Changed the bent 52 tooth chainring for a proper SS 48 tooth ring in black from Velosolo. Fitted the new shimano freewheel to replace the about-to-explode dicta one that was on there. And finally, flipped the stem so my back doesn't go into spasm after five miles, gave it all a good clean, admired my handiwork with a beer, showed the other half and got a bollocking for doing all the said work on the kitchen table.

fitted the Marathon plus tyres to the Felt and adjusted the disc brakes. By God they stop the bike on a sixpence now.
I read that fitting the Marathons would be a 'mare but really they seemed remarkably easy. Quick adjustment of the 'guards to give more room and the jobs a good 'un.
Also cleaned the seriously mucky chain. I need to wipe it down BEFORE running the chain cleaner through. All shiny and silver again.Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Fool!
after fully waking up so much glass all very tiny but had cut right though in a few places and in some was still embended every turn and winkel got more and more, and it clearly had been cut and sratched to bits so i binned the tire and got a new one, plus since it was my street that I missed the glass or rather didn't! I sat out side picking up bits of glass amazing how many shards i managed to pick up with a dust pan....
and waiting for local shop to true the front wheel that I noticed was out.0 -
Replaced the BB in my SS, have to replace the freewheel also but a pub got in the way and sleep is needed before more fettling.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

The Shimano freewheel wasn't replaced, just lubed as it was bone dry inside. Opened it up and lubed it with thick chain lube.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Fitted new mudguards yesterday and this morning I fixed my first puncture in about 20 years, fortunately it happened as I got into work so I was able to repair it in relative comfort.0

Well that should last a few minutes.
Replaced the gear cables on the Equilibrium. Went for the fancy Dan cross below the down-tube technique - it really does look nice from the front, and the shifting is smooth as butter whipped with liquid Teflon and banana skin extract.0
