Chain placed in empty milk carton and a dash of degreaser added and shaken like Tom Cruise in Cocktail, drying overnight and will be refitted and lubed. Clean drive train for Monday.

Re-aligned rear wheel after a drop-out mishap/shout roadside, I will get round to fitting the surly chaintug.. One day

Just a bit over cautious tightening the nuts after I cross threaded the front, all I need is wrong torque and another lesson learned roadside before I sell my tools an support the lbs  suppose I do better job than the local halfords, knowing the lad that works there - still lots of mistakes to learn from :) happy fettling peoples

Spent a traumatic afternoon fettling my sisters Raleigh Oakland. Did my best but cleaning, degreasing and lubing seems to have no effect on chainsets apparently crafted entirely from tarnished aluminium and plastic.

Had to polish some SRAM Red to recover from the ordeal.

Replaced the KO'd axle in my Halo Aerorage hub with a QR axle to give me this.

    imag0113si.jpg

When I get the wheel rebuilt I'll be using chaintugs with it so I'm confident it won't move.

Is that with 120mm OLD spacing? as its exactly what i want todo with an Aerorage axle, already have the Surly Chaintug ready. Hoping its simply just a case of ordering a hollow replacement and swapping the guts over :?:

Total cost so far is around £15. Circlip pliers for £7.50 and hollow 140mm axle for £7. Still need to locate a piece of metal tubing for inside the hub but I reckon overall cost will be £20 then get a new rim and rebuild the wheel.

    Noob alert:

Just noticed that the cable to the front derailleur is literally hanging by a thread. Haven't changed one before - I'm assuming it's not too tricky for a novice fettler? Have some decent cable cutters and have watched an instruction video. Anything to watch out for?

    Naah, should be fine.

I finished building my MTB so just need to get the gears set up plus a few other tweaks. That left less time than I'd hoped for (ie Sunday afternoon) the rebuild of my Dawes which has been a bit creaky lately and deserving of a bit of TLC.

Anyway, I still managed to clean it properly (properly enough to discover that the tyres are tan wall...) and strip and regrease the headset (including re installing the missing ball bearing from the top race that has been lying between two floorboards in the khazi for the last 6 months....... - still, it was safe there, I knew where it was!) and fit the new brake blocks (having finally found some with the right thread size). Also freed and re-tightened quite a few bolts to hopefully avoid them siezing. Still want to remove the mechs for a proper cleaning.

Mine got a similar clean yesterday - stripped down most of it to discover a seized chain

I'm really impressed how well it's held up after all the abuse thrown at it. Probably a good thing I got the model that had the brown / black paint job.

Got into work dinnertime and spotted something missing

    imag01141g.jpg

Luckily I had a long enough bolt in the bottle boss that holds the pump clip on when the pump isn't in the pannier bag so fettled that into the hole for the ride home and added some blue threadlock to the bolt when I got home.

Just stripped the Focus back to the frame, Cleaned and polished it to within an inch of its life and its now gleaming.

I only intended to tighten the crank-set as there was a bit of play...

ended up removing the entire group-set for a deep clean, rims are now dirt free. Hubs and pedals serviced. Disc calipers free of dirt. It looks like new.

I'll be on the Carerra until its hot now!

Been doing only what's absolutely necessary to keep it running. Rebuilt the Boardman Road Comp from bargain-basement parts in order to use it as a winter commuter/shopper. Fitted a pair of Continental Gatorskins after 6 punctures in 5 days on the factory tyres (Vittoria Zaffiros). Still waiting on a rear mech (Ultegra) to get the Scott CR1Pro back together, then I can decide on what cables to use.

Any fans of Yokozuna Reaction cables?

It's all ready for the summer! It's going to be a hot one this year (even if I have to build a conservatory to house a sun lamp and a turbo trainer).

Noticed a slight play in headset after yesterdays ride, so tightened that up this morning.

Need to try and re-index the gears on the new bike as it all sounds a bit rubby.

Any tips\tricks to indexing SRAM over Shimano or Camapg?

It's really easy. Just count the clicks as you turn the barrel adjuster so you can easily get back to where you started if required.

So on my way home tonight i noticed that my rear wheel was moving left to right, so i got in and tightened the cones. then i did it up too tight, so i decided it would be easier to just take it all apart and regrease the bearings...

so one regreased rear hub later, different cassette as wheel is now on a different bike and then a studded tyre fitted ready for tomorrows fun!

Cleaned and regreased my M970 spd due to a rather annoying clicking in one side.

It was like a surgical operation, 24 tiny bearings. Click now appears to have gone, but we'll see.
