Over the weekend, I'm aiming to change handlebars on the roadie to a compact one and replace lost toeclip on the hybrid.

I'll report back if I actually carry out these jobs

    Fitted a new front derailleur.

Then gave up trying to get the gears shifting correctly afterwards. Will have to give it to the LBS to do that, it's something I just can't seem to get :?

Try removing the cable and adjusting the high and low screws by moving the deraileur by hand. Once you have the range near enough re-attach the cable and adjust the tension.

It was the cable tension I couldn't get set right. Shop seems to have got it though, changing fine when on the stand although a quick shift down when riding back to the car didn't work. Need another test ride to make sure it wasn't just me though :?

Replaced lost toeclip but now need to swop over.

Changing handlebars might be done tomorrow evening as I've now opened a bottle of wine. Tastes rather nice too 8)

Yesterday I stripped and cleaned the bike, chain rings off and cleaned, jockey wheels too , wet lube and winter gunk is gone completly. Nice and shinny and now with dry lube. Having completed this I then pressure washed the patio and decking and was knackard so didn't even take it for a test ride. This mornings commute and it's running like a dream perfect shifting very happy.

    I had a revelation.

Not been enjoying my new bike for a while, it's just been uncomfortable and I couldn't pin it down. In the end I decided it was just the new saddle that came with the bike so I swapped it out with the one from my old bike. Sat on the bike and thought it felt much better so went out on it for a test.

About a mile in I'm thinking this is no better than the other saddle, still uncomfortable.

Anyway on a whim I raised the seatpost by an inch thinking 'It can't be worse'.

    So much better....

15 miles later I'm still smiling.

Good clean down on Saturday in preparation for the Phoenix Easter Classic. Flat route cassette on, super clean and lube of chain, front and rear mechs cleaned and re-indexed.

Why is it that every single time I do anything wrt the rear mech and cleaning, I forget to lub the jockey wheels. Because a long sportive ride with two squeaking jockey wheels is not great. 100% of the time I do this.

Stripped down and rebuilt a kids bike donated to me by a neighbour, what a mess it was too, every nut & bolt only finger tight

Now my daughter has 2 bikes, hmmm n+1 this could get messy

Fixed a puncture...A bit mundane I know, but I've been lucky so far and never had to do one yet. Luckily it was all inside, after I swapped tires round for turbo use - must have got the tube pinched on the changeover.

Used the tube of rubber solvent and one of those black patches that looks like nothing's come off - I was expecting the whole black circle to peel off and cover the hole! But it looks like just the individual atoms needed to plug the hole somehow seep through the solvent and do the job. SCIENCE!

Twisted the LH shifter back inline after a chav ran into me whilst I was riding past at 17mph today.

Resprayed the seat post of my MTB - the saddle bag, lights and mudguard fittings coupled with a tendency for slippage had made a right mess of it. Looks very smart now though. Can't believe that I thought of getting a new seat post at one point.

Adjusted the reach on my shifters. Now I can reach them from the drops, which is probably a good thing.

Took chain, cassette, chain rings off and degreased, lubed and re-fitted.

    Fitted new brake blocks.

Changed both tyres as they'd seen better days and treated them to new tubes too.

Dismantled front hub (rear is new anyway), cleaned out, re-greased and re-fitted.

Nothing ground breaking, but now my machine sparkles. I'm thinking of spending the night in the shed just to look at it!

Just replaced my brake levers with some that run the cables backwards and along the bar, under the tape. (Or foam, in my case.)
Last week I found an old front wheel with a vintage Maxicar hub and used it as a replacement for my existing wheel which probably needs a new rim and only has a boring Shimano hub.
This post contains traces of nuts.

Cleaned and lubed in prep for a century and a bit tomorrow. About to fit my cadence sensor although the shape of my stays may make that more challenging than it should be.

Took off all the stuff that slows me down. After a weighted 10k miles it now feel like I'm floating places, not cycling!

pulled a 1" long thorn from the tyre of my MTB then watched the green slime bubble to the surface of the tyre, a quick spin of the rear coming to rest hole down should take care of that one.

Been messing around with the superglue and the snaped faceplate off my LH STI lever since the puncture on thursday, seems that I have failed as the two pieces don't follow the curve of the lever and the RH faceplate fits the curve so the lver is good, the faceplate not. Ah well only £10 ish to replace.

Couldn't stop myself giving the MTB a re-spray. Incredibly easy to strip it down, just needed two allen keys to get it to the frame plus pedals. Made easier by the fact that all the places where the cables attached have slots so you can take all of the brakes and gears off intact.

Needs new handlebar grips now. (Trying not to think that the fork and brakes should be red)

several enjoyable hours putting my Birdy back into top notch running condition. the only thing niggling now is a sticky front brake, it works and disengages enough but theres a bit of grit or crud stopping it being just right. New cable & outer and PITA of routing it inside the front fork tomorrow and it'll be running like new.

Finally finished replacing the faded fabric saddle cover on the mixte with a hand sewn leather jobbie. Had some leather left over so made matching handle bar grips and sewed them onto the handlebars.

The bike may be approaching 30 years old, but it rides like new and the leather contact points feel great.

finally got around to cleaning all the muck off the chain, remarkably still in good condition.

the freewheel still sounds rough, but at least the it's freewheeling rather than pretending to be fixed!
