I gave the Tiagra hubs better bearings and grease before I even started, as they felt slightly rough. The Rigida Rims seem very sturdy and not *too* heavy and the Sapim spokes were a joy to use. All 72 of them
Need to pop some tyres, tubes and a cassette on them tonight so I can use them on tomorrow's commute.
Nice one
How long did it take and how much did it cost to build the pair (hubs + spokes + rims)?
Did you use Sapim Races?0 -

Sorry - another question. In Musson's book, he describes a spoke driver made from an old screwdriver, bent and filed. Did you make yourself one of these?0 -
damn just noticed the rims on the R500 wheels I use the the CX have acquired some groves
Not even that old, still it's too be expect with the weather and terrain around here.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Took about four hours the pair, no doubt I'd be much faster next time. All wen't well.
The hubs were £25 for both from Ribble, the total for spokes and rims was £65 from Spa cycles. I could have got the rims slightly cheaper, but Spa were very good with advice and telling me the correct spoke lengths... I used Sapim Race except for on the drive-side, rear, where I followed Spa's advice and got the thicker, plain-gauge Sapim Leader. Thicker spokes on the drive side evens out the tension due to the dishing.Gussio wrote:Sorry - another question. Sort of, I couldn't find a screwdriver that I could bend myself - even B&Q Value screwdrivers are Chrome Vanadium! In the end I bought something like these: http://www.toolspot.co.uk/product/toolz ... driver-set, and ground it away with my bench-grinder. A mostly useful tool, except when I was doing the front wheel, as it was adding too much tension straight off (spokes a little shorter than needed for the tool).0 -
Thanks UE - appreciate the info! Nice to hear that Spa were so helpful with the spoke length calculations, which seems to be a bit of a minefield area. Also glad to know that it isn't just me that can't bend a screwdriver0

The guy from Spa knew the lengths off the top of his head. Rode the wheels in this morning, still fully tensioned and true. They ride very smoothly, but I can't tell about speed just yet, as my wheel magnet isn't playing fair.
I'll be glad when I feel I can just trust them without stopping every few miles to check they're OK. :roll:0 -

Must be a nice feeling when the wheels don't implode at the first touch of brake Did you use any sort of tension meter?0 -

A guitar. If you pluck a properly tensioned, double-butted spoke of the length I was using, it should play an A above middle-C.

I've got to put more tension into the chain tonight, that's twice since I upgraded the gearing. Is that a normal bedding in process? I'm running MKS tugs to stop slippage.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

I fitted a new frame, and complete transmission system, or did I build up a new bike ??? not sure really !
Will put a picture at the weekend in the commuter bike thread0 -
Semi Slicks back on. Watch it freeze up again or snow next week, it's been a while since my last fall.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

Stripped the commuter down to every last nut and bolt, replaced cables inners & outers and greased everything, even stripped the wheels.
rinse, w/spirit scrub, degrease scrub then rinse, hand dry, wax and polish.
Painted every chip with car touch up paint.

Took at a look at the back rim to see why the braking was jerky and found a small problem in the form of a split Reinflated the tyre and started stripping the matching front wheel and heard an almighty bang which was the rim splitting big time which caused me to spill the beer I was drinking. Now means I'll have ro ride the Allez on monday probably.
This is the remains of the rim. I'm glad this happened at home and not on the road.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -

You spilt your beer ???

Yes, Mavic Open4CD. Luckily the total outlay for the pair of wheels on old 105 hubs is now £30 with 50% of that going to the LBS for truing. Bearings, spindle, SS hub acquired from ebay etc.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
Bloody hell mate, that would not have been a fun failure mode on the road!FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

Fitted new Crank Brothers Cyan Ti bottom bracket, refitted FSA compact chainset and SPD pedals, cleaned chain and adjusted canti brakes so they actually stop again.
Whilst I was at it I reindexed the front and rear dérailleurs - simple stuff with campag.
Oh and I fitted a new Schwalbe ralph CX tyre on the rear with zefal tyre liner, great grip but damn slow on the road.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Squeaky pedals.
Removed pedals, cleaned and greased threads, re-attached pedals.

How lucky of me to have chosen to take my steel frame for a respray on a day when the train is packed solid due to an earlier fault.

Sigh! removed Steel off the turbo when I realised it has ye old skool flat pedals and couldn't be arsed to swap them over.
Then took great pleasure NOT bashing the crap out of the 1" campag record headset cups with my rubber mallet, finished off with the home-made headset press only to find the newly re-sprayed forks are cut to short

Fitted new ceramic BB. Chainset now spins for c 20 secs rather than 8 secs on the 105 BB. Sure that makes bugger all difference in the real world but maybe a small placebo effect?0
