Fitted the Swiss Stop brake pads I ordered a week ago. Not a day to late, old pads were completely worn, front pads and rear. Stop on a dime now.

Upped the saddle on the planet-x by 5mm last night. It now matches the effective seat height on my other bikes (170mm vs 175mm cranks made the difference). Feels sooo much better now

Rear mech was clattering around like a bag of spanners so I spent a little time making minute turns of the barrel adjuster whilst hand cranking the pedals when I got to work. Made bugger all difference but made me look pro in front of all the hybridders.

Replaced the rear mech & shifter outers, then proceeded to re-index the gears - at last shifting seems to be working again, for now .... bloody ShimaNO!!!!!

Whist indexing I noticed a regular knocking noise, which turned out to be nothing more that several dry chain links, odd as I keep my chains in tip-top clean & lubed condition.

Took a link out of the MTB chain, would you know it no more chain slap - ace!

Stripped fixie back to the frame, cleaned all the gunk and decals off, removed BB checked threads and refitted. Headset serviced, stripped brakes and serviced, new inners and outers. Built some new wheels. Replaced sprockets and chain. Double wrapped the bars.

All washed down with a few beers and an afternoon BBQ. Nice 8)

Stripped off all the winter stuff from the fixie, cleaned every crevice and polished the whole thing with Autoglym. Even gave the Titanium bits a zoom on my buffing wheel. Fixed the slow puncture on the rear.

To fix said slow puncture I had to get some patches from my office kit, and (having had one or two tinnies) this meant getting my Vanquish roadworthy to shoot out and get them.

    This involved;

Bodge fitting a set of carbon forks I had lying around (steerer too long => loads of spacers), swapping over the front caliper for a long-reach one to match the forks, pinching the pedals from the fixie and indexing the rear mech. Took about an hour and looks bizarre, but rides really rather well.

Then of course I had to pull up Wiggle on the iPhone and order a new set of pedals and clips for the fixie...........damn you one-click internet ordering.

Cleand the bike at the weekend and thought I;d solved the poblem with the back end rattling. I'd narrowed the noise down to the back wheel when I swapped them over on Friday and i noticed some play in the cassette on the Fulcrums that wasn't there in the cassette on the Rovals.

Stripped it down, cleaned it, put it back together and tightend the lock ring.

    It still rattles.

Didn't notice any wear on the freehub body that might be allowing the movement (and after 300 or so miles I'd be very disappointed) so if I get the change tonight I'm going to change the cassette for the one on my Rovals.

    Why I love my bicycle:
I washed it, oiled things. It works.
Motorbike however: clutch started to slip. Replaced plates and springs. Still slips, take apart again pack out springs and try again. Now it slips or drags or both.
When I fix the motorbike it's going on Ebay. I love the simplicity of my bicycle.
    (hope I haven't tempted fate)

Hopefully tonights fettle has cured the noise coming from the relatively new freewheel on the Tricross so tonight I took the outer face off the freewheel and put some grease on the bearings inside. The pawls still engage/disengage, only time will tell.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Finally got the plastic bottom bracket cup out of my frame. I had to buy a second BB tool with better spines and it ended up just snapping it.

Took the use of a dremel, screwdriver, a small sledgehammer and various other tools.

Was in real danger of damaging the threads but they seem to be ok, fingers crossed.

Replaced my chain after it made sure I couldn't catch up with a guy on a folder on a gradient. As soon as I put any pressure on the pedal it goes thunk and slips. It's embarrassed me for the last time, slipping out every time I (try) to overtake someone.

While I was doing it I noticed a bit of shark-toothiness on my big ring so maybe it's time for a slightly bigger one. Back brake is a bit worn too.

I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Stuck strapless toeclips on 10YO's hybrid thing on Sunday.
Monday evening, and we're going to the Sci week Chemistry lecture, and he hasn't tried them yet, but we're running late.
30 seconds of explanation about fliping the pedals up, & how he can always pedal on the wrong side, & we set off. Oh dear. I should have planned this better.
When we get home I ask him if the pedals were OK.

He says they're brilliant. No problems at all. His feet stay where he wants them to. (He's quite spinny).

smashed my rear mech off on sunday...

so this week has seen a new rear mech, a straightening of the mech hanger, a new chain (the last one got split to single-speed the bike to get back to a mates garage for mech bodging), a new cassette and while I was at it, fitted a new bottom bracket as the last one was grinding.

Also, serviced my rear hub, new bearings clean out and grease....

Headset and front hub are next on the list as the bottom race is feeling a little dry and the front hub has completed a year without even thinking about it.

    Nice freshen up for summer!

Chain didn't work, made the skipping worse, was so bad I turned back, got changed and took the car. New cassette to fit tonight groan, if I'd have seen it coming I'd have bitten the bullet and gone 10 speed.

    Fixed the fixed.
Some play in the rear hub.
Took the opportunity to give a good clean.
Add the halflink to the chain.
Put it all back together, tidied away the spare lockring.

Spare lockring? Didn't think I had a spa... :?

Top tip folks if you've just changed chain and or cassette make sure your rear dérailleur jockey wheels move freely.

Failure to do so will result in shocking / noisy shifting and even auto shifting, no one likes auto shifting.

In other news my front door is has no been stripped buffed clean and re-coated in wood stain - looks awesome 8)

The rest of the outside house now looks even worse - ahhhh balls!!!!

Sunbathing gets boring so both bikes got the same treatment this week.

Chain & jockey wheel service, a modest clean and brakes adjusted.

Re-fitted the tri bars to the roadie, so much comfier, flew home last night 8)

Oh and took a gamble, mud guards off.. living on the wild side.

My 20 year old Silca Steel track pump sprang a leak. Stripped it down and the leather barrel washer has started to perish. Made repairs with superglue and silicon sealant, then stripped the track pump to parts for a full service.

The pump's looking a bit tatty, lots of chipped paint, ah bugger it, sanded it down, and re-painted it silk black - done ! Re-assembled and it works like new. Found out that SJS stocks the spare washers for £4. 8)

At the weekend the Orbea got new 105 calipers front and rear, new cable outers and inners and new Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase 25mm tyres

The braking is now much smoother, as you might imagine

I forgot to put the new chain on though, have to do that one evening this week

Fitted a cable to the front downtube shifter, so easy with friction shifting, pull cable through and tighten dérailleur bolt.

    Sweet! perfect shifting every time.

The stupid velcro strap that holds my Topeak pump on finally gave up the ghost. Got some velcro and elastic, 30 minutes of stitching later I have a far superior strap in that it now has some give in it so won't come off on the first bump. Jobsagooden.
