Cleaned and admired my Cube which I took for a spin today. Lubed up the chain and put back to bed.

Cleaned the Defy which was in a state after two weeks of commuting and lubed the chain ready for tomorrow.

removed cassette and cleaned it to see whether I'd get another chain out of it, new chain fitted, general clean, new wheel hub bearings

On the run in this morning, it appears that my visual inspection was a waste of time, as the chain was slipping; at least I know what I'll be doing when I get home tonight.

New 46T Miche Advanced chainring, new 16T sprocket and chain fitted at weekend (all due replacing).

77.5" from 74" previously. Lumpy up here but should give me a better top end speed.

Added a few reflective stickers to my cranks and helmet to compliment my Wowow reflective spoke straws.

I just up-ended my bike, spun the front wheel and went back about 20 metres (in the dark) and shone my EL210 at the bike from the side. Highly illuminated wheels and cranks means that cars should have no excuse for not seeing me as I pass side turnings.

My bike frame is black and I'm getting into this whole reflectives lark, so I may invest in some black reflectives. Black in colour, but reflects white. Only £2 delivered for 10mm x 1m of tape from here.

Other colours are available so whatever colour your frame is, you're covered.

They also do iron on decals. Turn all your clothing into reflective! Where is my credit card?...

Got some bits of black reflective tape on the black parts of my bike and helmet, tottaly inconspicuous in daylight but bright when a car headlights shine on it.

No fettling today other than a strip and clean of chainset of my winter bike.

Stripped it down today to take in the rear wheel to the LBS after it sucked the chain into it snapping a spoke and wrecking at least 6 others!

On stripping it I found i'd also wrecked the chain(twisted) and snapped the inside bit of the frame that holds the two jockey wheels in place!!!!

Hoping the weather holds out as i'm on my dry bike currently

I've been told that I'm spending too much money on the wet bike and the dry bike has to take it's place; n-1 :(
  • After a week of a squeaky disc brake on the front i fiinally took the plunge and centred it. I had been planning to do it at the weekend when i bought a allen key socket set, but as I couldn't find a decent set I just did it by "touch" a lovely quiet ride until the end when the rear started to do the same. I think i know what i am doing tonight ;)

  • Cleaned bike this weekend and adjusted the brakes so the pads actually align with the rims rather than only the top third of the pad. Replaced the factory tyres with GP4000's, was worried it would take me a long time to do as I haven't had a visit from she who must not be named so haven't attempted to remove the tyre. It went well and took alot less time than the clean!

Just need to adjust the front and rear deraileurs. (Didn't take the bike for the complimentary bolt tighten and gear adjustment after 6 weeks use and now trying to muddle my way through it! it still works but I figure it could be smoother)

On my ride home last Thurs, I rode the last couple of hundred m's with my neighbour who was riding a Kona MTB type thing. I could hear the brakes rubbing and said - drop it off with me at the weekend and I'll have a quick look at it for you.

Wish I'd kept my trap shut! The front wheel was out of true. It had also been put back in the frame with the quick release undone AND the hub nuts were so loose that the wheel shunted a good half a centimetre from side to side. It was totally potentiall lethal. I cleaned it up, trued the wheel, removed the hubnuts, cleaned the bearings, changed the grease, tightened up the wheel and put it back in and adjusted the brakes.

With some trepidation I looked at the back wheel - it was shaped like a pringle and needed a LOT of truing! Sorted the wheel, tried to sort the back brakes, but she had 2 locks wrapped around the frame snagging the brake cable which prevented it from springing back, so did best I could. Sorted out gear indexing.

She had been complaining that she thought the bike was too small for her, so I'm going to swap out her stem for her - but I'm thinking that having a front wheel that isn't wobbling across the (undone) quick release and a rear wheel a little straighter than a banana could make a big difference to her!

Mind you, she came round later with jerk chicken and rice and beans for me later on... Yum!

Also, finished my cross bike. Not enough chain length to go big big. Will have to deal with it!

My day off on Sunday was spent working on not only my own bike but also the bikes of the future parents in law, in particular that of the future mother in law who has just taken ownership of a 1977 Dawes Compass, a cycle which can only be discribed as 'interesting' to ride.

Adjusted the brake blocks to compensate for the new 50/17 drivetrain and gold chain and found the cones need some love from a spanner.

Quick Q, what gear should you put the bike in before removing the chain. I can't seem to find it online :?

Swapped broken BB for another broken BB it would seem, confused as there's no play however it still clunks like it's fooked.

Also messed with tyre pressures on the CX, couldn't really tell the difference off road, on road was sluggish.

New chain and a new cassette, wash and polish. Thought I would give the bike some love as I gave up on riding today due to wind related cowardice.

Had been wondering about getting an airzound and fitting it to dropped bars, am very tempted. Good little spot there so you wouldn't have to move your hands at all. Did you just use cable ties?

Yes you take the red screw bit out of the airzound then mount it to the bars using cable ties, i have my bars ( not the ones in the pic) wrapped with 2 layers of bartape as i ride rough country lanes so i need the padding .
This is the link to the article from the manufacturers website...

I have the bottle in the bottle cage atm as i don't need it atm and in the summer i shall add a spare cage as i am sure i can manage on 1 bottle for 10 miles even in mid summer

You can pick up a new one for £16.99

    Oh the shame

Yesterday I swapped my broken BB for another used one, installed and went for a ride, every rotation caused a clunk, damn this one must be broken as well???

Anyway this morning I went to remove the BB when Mrs itboffin came into the garage and whilst talking to me pointed out a nasty looking ding in the chainstay

Oops seems the replacement BB axle length combined with the campag crank arms now only had about 1mm clearance, so everytime I push under load it touched the frame - CLUNK!!!

    Duh!

I'm awaiting a new BB delivery so meanwhile I've added a 2mm cassette spacer, which seems to have done the trip.

    Ye Ha!

With the commuting bike: anything that needed greasing was done. chain cleaned and re-lubed accordingly. back break blocks taken off and crud cleaned off which had caused the start of the week problems. And finally just a good all round clean.

That's better, makes so much of a difference to have a BB that works.

ditched the stock 700x28 tyres on the pig finally and replaced them with the 700x28 marathons (non-plus version) I bought in the on-one sale. bit worried as only tubes I could find with schrader valves were 28-38 and the rim takes a max 28 tyre i think as it's quite narrow.

quick test ride to tesco's seems to be fine but seriously hoping they don't fail on the commute. anyone know if it's unwise for me to do this or should I try and find smaller tubes?

I also made the jump from freewheel to fixed on the rear hub  tomorrows commute will be... interesting. nice and slow ride in I think.
