On Sat 20 miles into the LBL my chain dropped itself into the spokes and seized solid, I tried for about 20 mins to get it free in the end it came loose but not without further bending a spoke which in turn put my wheel so out of true it wouldn't spin without hitting the brakes and worse still the frame, it was at this point it dawned on me that my ride was over :(

Being 20 miles in also meant 20 miles back, walking!

I had to take drastic action and bent the spoke enough to allow the wheel to turn with the brake completely open, in that state I was able to limp to the first food stop another 7 miles away, foolishly i'd assumed the Mavic services would be there and i'd be able to swap wheels ...nope!

So now i'm 27 miles in and therefore 27 miles back, which just so happens to be the short route difference or there abouts, yes I limped around the short route with no rear brake and unable to use the last sprocket on my cassette without dumping my chain.

I can tell you now the La Redoute is bloody tough and not made any easier when you have to stop at the bottom to fix your chain then try to clip back in and not fall off.

this bike has never had any issued and the limit screws were perfect, I suspect I must have bent my mech hanger during transit to Liege.

One expensive trip but very enjoyable if just for the experience of riding such a classic event.

So you were down one sprocket and no rear brake? And you abandoned? With a functioning front brake and 9 or 10 gears available on the cassette?

It's fun but i reckon it will take the 60T with a slightly bigger notch in the front retaining clip.

I'm waiting and waiting for the spider cranksets to come back into stock so I can fit a 56T to mine but they've not been available for ages. Are you using the new Brompton chainset, or have you got some other combination?

It's the new chainset (well 2013 model at any rate). If you stick a 58 on the 3-speed you get a really good high gear, as it is on the 2-speed it just gives a useful speed increase at a comfortable cadence. I would recommend a 58 if you're running the stock 54, the reduced gear bromptons on a 50T must be dreadfully slow. I'm going to have a go with a 60T if the supplier ever comes back to me with accurate dimensions, the BWC is coming up fast again this year. :D

BWC is exactly why I want to up the gearing, but the new crank sets are non-existent unless you are getting with a new bike attached.

i've just swapped wheelset back on the Scott and discovered why I had an issue, seems i'm running different sized cassettes on two wheelset and the set i chose for the LBL is ever so slightly narrower :x

oh and a gave the commuter chainset brakes and rear wheel a quick scrub, what differences does it make its been raining here since last Friday anyway.

MTFU - I spent the worst winter in thirty years with a stuck front derailer (had to kick it to change down), no rear brake (it'd work once in an emergency then stick) and a chain that'd jump off the top sprocket if you thought about getting off the seat to pedal up a hill. That bike taught me loads about fettleology!
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

    Took off winter mudguards!

Had also been suffering what I thought was just a draggy freehub for the past couple of days, on disassembly for cleaning, found three driveside axle bearings shorn in half. At which point, I gave up, smashed it back together and took it to LBS for them to sort. Not really sure how the wheel was even turning on the axle before, but it certainly didn't after I reassembled the hub. :?

You can use an XTR 11-40T 11 speed cassette with the new 105 and Ultegra shifters with an SGS mech. With that range on the back and a bit of pick and mix from Ultegra cassettes to make it less gappy at the top end and a chain guide you could run a 1x11 setup with a 50T front ring and still end up with a 0.8 lowest gear comparable to a 28T rear with a 34T front at 0.82.

  • The once-delicious Record headset on the Equilibrium was starting to feel a bit stuff, so I thought I'd give it some new grease (first time in three and a bit years, about 16,000 miles).

Turns out that it wasn't fitted properly by the LBS, the top balls were in the bottom and vice-versa, meaning that it'd never actually fitted together correctly, meaning water ingress. A couple of the balls are missing from the now-upper cage too. Ho hum, cleaned and regreased while waiting for new bearings to arrive. Oh, and one of the cages was upside-down as well.

How did it ever work? And so well, for so long!

I regreased my record headset for the first time since i fitted it (correctly) in 2008 and would you believe it it still looks like new on the inside, the only damage was the folk crown race is split. I suspect that's due to me riding the Rapha hell of the north on a carbon road bike.

    well worth the money imo

  • Should have done it myself in the first place, shouldn't I?

Still looks surprisingly ok inside, it'll look much better when I get the new bearings for it. And put them in the right way round. Very much worth the money, I'd never realised how much difference a good headset could make.

Hopefully some balance will now be restored....just spent a few hours swapping some SKS Chromoplastic mudguards from my Tifosi to my daughter's new Vita, and fitting some new SKS Longboards to the Tifosi. Don't ask why, seemed a good idea at the time...Oh, and finally got around to fitting a Tortec Velocty rack (£14 bargain from Go Outdoors). Very tidy. :)
